The Other Side of Sarah's Heaven - Nancy Lane
Prologue
No one expected to find the widow Sarah, like she was found, curtains drawn, in bed, mid afternoon. Nobody had seen or talked to her all day.
A month earlier, Sarah had requested that the family bring her packing boxes, and storage containers. Everybody came to the conclusion that after 25 years, Sarah was selling her house and relocating. Moving to a new location, a new beginning, leaving the old homestead, that held so many memories of her and Jim’s past life.
Two weeks later Sarah, abruptly, decided against the move. What changed her mind, what happened during those two-weeks to convince her not to sell her house. Instead, she started giving items, she had packed up away. Sarah’s family thought nothing of the fact that here it was January, and Sarah was spring cleaning. Lynn thought it strange, but it kept her busy. She had scripted the walls bare, taking family pictures off the wall and putting them in storage containers. Sarah asked, other family members, earlier to take some of her flowers, until she get settled in her new home. Keeping only the Gardenia tree someone had delivered, during Jim’s service. She had planted it in the front yard, and over the summer she almost lost the tree completely. It struggled in the sunny spot, preferring a shady area, of the yard. Sarah watched it daily, noticing it fading under the scorching sun. Lynn suggested that she put some shade over the small Gardenia Tree. Therefore, she founded an old beat up umbrella and shield it from the sun. A few weeks later, small leaves were beginning to emerge.

Sarah spent the morning doing errands, its all humdrum. She sighed, bills, groceries, dry cleaners. Thinking of all the things she had to do she pushed, the grocery cart around the store. Filling it with the monthly supplies, she needed. Nearing the end of shopping, she felt the familiar onset of an asthma attack. First, the tightness in her lungs, shortness of breath, followed by wheezing. These attacks were debilitating.
Looking for a place to sit, ’till she could get her breathing under control. She slowly walked to the store’s cafe and were relieved to fine an empty booth near the entrance. Her breathing was becoming harsh and laborious, as she sat down.
Frantically, she fumbled in her purse… . tissues… . old receipts… . pens. I need to clean out this purse, she muttered under her breath. Where is that inhaler? I know I put it in my purse… . she could still hear Jim’s echo, honey don’t forget to bring your in . . . . aha… . she smiled feebly. It’s getting to the point I have to carry this thing with me everywhere I go, she scowled. While I do my chores, even gardening, I have to keep it within arms reach, she complained. At last, her hand touched the cool surface of the container, she grabbed it, and snatched the cover off. Shaking the container, she place the nozzle in her mouth, and squeezed the pump. Sarah waited for the Albuterol, to spread, throughout her airways. The sweet relief of the medicine was quick to flow within her lungs, sort of like air filling a balloon, she smiled at the image.
She sat a little while longer, replacing the now nearly, empty container back in her purse, she stood up. Sighing… . Now, I will have to stop at the Pharmacy’s, she groaned.
Thinking of her last visit to Doctor Bostitch office, last month, he gave her strict orders, to continue to sleep under the bpap machine he prescribed a couple of years ago. Sarah didn’t tell Doctor Boss, as she like to call him, she had stopped using, the machine, at night after Jim health started declining. Today she could really feel the difference by the many times she had stopped and used, the inhaler that morning. This is not good, she admitted to herself, promising to sleep with the mask on tonight.
With renewed energy, she
