Pons

In the clear blue waters near the shores of Réunion Island lives one of the most unusual sea creatures in all the world. He is a fat, blubbery, beautiful dugong and his name is Pons.

Pons is a herbivore. A herbivore is an animal that eats only plants. Herbivores never eat meat. This makes Pons quite different from the other creatures who share the ocean with him because they do eat meat. They eat other fish and plankton, but not Pons. He eats sea grass and only sea grass.

Sea grass grows in shallow, warm salt water, and like all other grass in the world, it needs sunshine in order to grow. There is no sunshine deep down at the bottom of the ocean which means there is no grass down there for Pons to feed on. So, he makes his home close to the shore where his food is.

The little island called Réunion is in the Indian Ocean. It is a warm, tropical paradise. There are lush, green forests and white, sandy beaches. There are pretty birds and unusual animals to see. Colorful gardens of flowers and trees fill the air with lovely scents. And many kinds of fish and sea mammals swim in the ocean waters.
