CHAPTER 1
At the Pond
Mumps lives in a small pond at the edge of an old farm. Not too long ago it was a lonely place for Mumps. Once in a while a butterfly would come by and rest upon a flower. Mumps liked to look at the butterflies. But they never talked to him. They just sat and waved their wings and then they flew away.
Two garden snakes crawled through the grass around the pond. Mumps was not afraid of the snakes. They were harmless.
He wished they would come close for a visit, but they never did.
Flocks of birds and geese came to drink the pond water and sometimes a mother deer and her baby fawn grazed nearby.
There were tiny bugs crawling around and water fleas, whirligig beetles, and worms swimming in the water. These were the creatures that Mumps ate. They were not his friends, they were his food.
It was good that Mumps had food. He knew this. Still, he wished he had a friend. For Mumps, the days at the pond were long and lonely.
2-3.tifOne morning, Mumps woke up very early. He stretched his neck and opened his eyes and looked around. Then, he took a deep breath and smelled the fresh water.
Ribbit, ribbit,
said Mumps, then,
croak, croak.
Mumps was mixed up.
He did not know what to say.
Anyway, he was awake and it was time for breakfast.
While Mumps was sitting on the
lily pad eating his morning meal, a great
dark shadow fell across him.
HELLO?
roared a voice from above.
Ir… . .k
said Mumps, very quietly. He was scared.
He bent down low, hoping that he would not be seen.
HELLO!
shouted the voice again.
Mumps wondered, Is it God?
He closed his eyes tight and looked up. He could
