CHAPTER I

Mattie McCracken and her dog, TuTu, were sitting on the front steps of their home in Sunrise Point, Maine. The early spring breeze off the ocean blew the fur back from TuTu’s eyes and tugged at the wisps of hair that had escaped from Mattie’s braids. They were waiting for the arrival of the mail. It was Thursday, the day the local newspaper was delivered along with a lot of interesting catalogs and announcements. One never knew when an event would present a new adventure.

TuTu’s ears went up. She heard the familiar sound of the mail carrier’s vehicle rounding the turn as it made it’s way towards their home near the ocean.

Soon the friendly mail carrier placed the mail in the mailbox on its post by the roadway. After waving to the mailman Mattie carefully gathered it all to take into the house where her mother waited. Mattie folded the newspaper as it was TuTu’s job to carry it carefully so it would not get wet. Mattie was in charge of letters, magazines and catalogs.
