Theology
"And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation which
is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer or
whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation."
(II Corinthians 1:6, KJV)
"My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into divers temptations; knowing
this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her
perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing."
(James 1:2-4, KJV)
"Hurt in the World Today"- Demographics illustrates globally that there are countless billions of people who suffer in diverse ways originating from the fall of Adam and Eve. How do you rise, move forward, overcome, and heal when you’re hurting? How do you help when crisis or negative situations happen to the upright or righteous people? How do you explain pain and suffering to someone who is consumed with the circumstance? For instance, the Apostle Paul personifies a picture of great sufferings, trials, tribulations, and persecution as ascribed in II Corinthians 1:6. It is inevitable that humanity will face trials and tribulations in life according to James 1:1-4, and can count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations.
What’s more, as helpers, care-givers, imitators of Jesus, servants, ministers and Christ-centered counselors we must possess the ability to help hurting people heal from these times of pain, suffering, pressure, and distress giving timely—answers, guidance, direction, and tools during life’s most perplexing situations. As a counselor, you cannot afford not to possess the ability to minister to others in the area of pain and suffering.
First, as a Christian and then as a counselor you can rest assure, that sometime in your life, counseling practice, your ministry or in your spiritual walk—you will experience pain, suffering, pressures and distress. Second, if you have not already experienced this, and if you have the mind of Christ, you will! The Apostle Paul asserts in II Corinthians 1:8b when he says, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, inasmuch that we despaired even of life:
in the like, one may ask God Why must we suffer?
In spiritual turbulence or turmoil God has a way out for you. The Word of God
says that He will make a way of escape that we may be able to bear it (I Corinthians 10:11-13, KJV). In other words, humanity or believers will be delivered by the Word of God
through faith. In counseling—you can Biblically guide the counselee to learn to be a winner in: "the olive press, a bleak or losing situation, and enable individuals to report the victory. Although there is a cost for the anointing power—a process for the divine purpose, you can rise to:
LIFE ON T.O.P (the olive press) and nothing can S.T.O.P. (success, triumph, opportunities, power)!" Christian counselors can ensure hurting individuals that they can turn pain, suffering, pressure, and distresses into power.
"For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came
to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength,
insomuch that we despaired even of life:"
(II Corinthians 1:8, KJV)

INTRODUCTION
This book encapsulates the theology of pain, sufferings, and pressures associated with humanity, the cost for the anointing power, and the process for its divine purpose. Dimensions of healing, health, wellness, wholeness or whole-person— (mind, body, and spirit) are explored. Additionally, this reading experience will impact and minister to people hurting globally.
The content contained within these pages will open doors, embraces a deeper meaning, demonstrates a way of escape and gives methods relative to ministering under the power of the anointing to those in despair. Readers will learn how to befriend these issues, and count it as joy reaping divine rewards, benefits, and power.
Today in a hurting world represents a pivotal time in history when statistics depicts that there are countless millions of people who suffer in diverse ways. The Holy Bible clearly outlines human suffering. For instance, in St. Matthew chapter 24:1-51 this book outlays diverse human suffering through eschatology (end-time) events. During Jesus’ earthly ministry, He taught His disciples what the world would experience during the end-time. According to St. Matthew 24:3-14, KJV it says:
"And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come."
Look at conditions the world over. Daily there are vast numbers of human beings suffering. For instance, the first thought one may have when thinking about sufferings is usually physical anguish, pain, and diseases. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services asserts that:
Chronic pain is the most universal form of human stress (1). Millions of Americans suffer from pain-related problems, often resulting in partial or complete disability. The social and economic impact of chronic pain is staggering. For example, in the United States every year, 600,000 people develop pain from arthritis for the first time (2). Twenty-five million Americans experience the painful consequences of a migraine headache on a regular basis (3). Low back pain, another common complaint, disables approximately 7 million citizens and accounts for over 8 million physician office visits annually (4)
(Salovey, P., Seiber, W. J., Smith, A.F., et al., 1992, pp. 1, 73-74).
Another example of human suffering consists of the grim disease, human immunodeficiency virus—HIV. The human immunodeficiency virus—HIV is the virus that causes AIDS and presents in epidemic statistics and sufferings that are staggering. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2014, pp. 1) reports that:
About 50,000 people get infected with HIV each year. In 2010, there were around 47,500 new HIV infections in the United States. About 1.1 million people in the United States were living with HIV at the end of 2010, the most recent year this information was available. Of those people, about 16% do not know they are infected.
Moreover, there is a burden of alcohol, substance abuse, and addictions in general that significantly impact the world of suffering. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2014) the burden of substance abuse in the usage current binge alcohol users are about 59.7 million people aged 12 or older in 2012, and current users of illicit drugs are about 23.9 million people aged 12 or older 2012
(Koh, Hines, Wan, Stein, & Harding, 2014, pp. 5).
Global levels of pain, suffering, and pressure are enormous. Consider some examples of global pains, sufferings, and pressures. There are billions of people who suffer from poverty, starvation, famine, plagues, leprosy, disparities, and homelessness. There are various types of life-event crisis: family crisis, fatherlessness, domestic violence, marital discord, divorce, family care giving of loved ones suffering from acute or chronic illnesses (e. g., hospice, paralysis, cerebral vascular accidents—CVA’s or strokes), etc. unexpected losses or deaths, grief, trauma, financial disasters, civil wars, global wars, racism/racial undertones, slavery, persecution, multilevel abuse scenarios (e. g., mental, physical, and sexual, etc.), assault, daunting drug trafficking, polysubstance abuse coupled with mental illness, and child trafficking. Humanity is facing more frequent reports of tragic/catastrophic events such as territorial/natural disasters, terrorism, violence, earthquakes, fires, drought, volcanoes, tornadoes, tsunamis, typhoons, hurricanes, floods, violent storms, disease and insect infestations due to weather (e. g. West Nile Virus), etc., which also add to the suffering in humanity. People also suffer from personal and emotional damage, pain(s), wounds from vulnerability and choices made in life. Prevalence and incidences of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideations, homicidal ideations, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder—PTSD, or once known as shell-shock,
are on the rise. The church as well as the nonbeliever are facing augmented levels of chicanery and diabolical activity that can result in torment and suffering.
Mental anguish and disorders affect nearly 44 million adults (Koh, Hines, Wan, Stein, & Harding, 2014, pp. 6). I have a passion and commission to the health and wellness ministry that has a wholistic approach in healing the body, mind, and spirit. As a psychiatric/mental health clinician my purpose for writing this book is to focus primarily on damaged emotions, psychological, and mental sufferings caused by pain, pressures, sufferings, and distresses. What’s more, in this highly inspirational memoir I will share candid personal details of my life relevant to deep emotional, psychological, and mental sufferings that challenged my own health and wellness. As the author of this book I will use integration of Biblical principles, godly application, through navigation of the Word of God,
that will enlighten and impact your thought processes. The analogy of the life of an olive will be paralleled with the anointing power—demonstrating that no matter what, the olive press is worth the cost!
My desired prayer and expected outcome from this day forward is that you will generate revived hope, healing, encouragement, and empowerment through spiritual impartation, practical truths, wisdom, and Christ-centered guidance—in the like that helped me to endure and survive. Moreover, I pray that God will call you higher to service in the Christian counseling ministry, anoint you with His power and wisdom in guiding others into the chambers of healing that only God can perform—while the faith-based helper will be enlightened by the practical approach in helping the hurting.
There is a process for the purpose of our sufferings. Begin connecting your suffering process which is universal, with divine purpose reflecting God’s character and love. "For it became him (Jesus Christ), for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings" (Hebrews 2:10).
Shalom,
—Dr. Melveena D. Edwards

CHAPTER One
Cries of Vulnerability
1.tifIn the midnight hour as I walked the milieu of a psychiatric emergency room—ER, I bared witness to the cries of vulnerability. Observing cries of torment, oppression, depression, affliction, anguish, anger, fear, anxiety, and mental breaks—I heard spirits yelling out of embodied souls of humanity. There were indigent conditions, levels of disparities, and the depth of deprived individuals of all ages. I discerned various levels of people yearning for help. Looking around the ER I assessed situations of pain, pressures, sufferings, and distress of many patients—then my eyes filled with tears, and my pores leaked of oil. The oil was not just any oil, it was the supernatural oil which can only be gained through the olive press, and is symbolic of the anointing power.
Once you have been through the cusps of the olive press, you therefore; will have the sheer understanding and empathy of the crossroad of pain and sufferings. From the press expereince, you will recognize it’s existence when you see others experiencing the olive press. It was then, when my spirit cried out to God asking these provocative questions: How may I reach out to these individuals?
"How may I touch and make the difference for your people?
How may I shine the light of godliness, to impart hope, help, agape love, and compassion remaining aligned within the scope of my nursing practice?"
During this midnight hour, God revealed to me that these people were fighting inner demons. Men and women were yelling, screaming, squealing in torment some with suicide and homicide ideations. Tears were flowing from confusion, grief, and anguish. Many were nearly defeated by hopelessness and helplessness. For some, the psychotic state/atmosphere was produced from the use of amphetamines, cocaine, opiates, cannabis, heroin, Phencyclidine or commonly known as PCP—(a recreational dissociative drug colloquially as angel dust.
Formerly used as an anesthetic agent that exhibits hallucinogenic effects) and the more, etc., and were precipitated by tumultuous, turbulent, and rising tsunamis of life circumstances. For instance, there was a young woman exhibiting escalating aggressive behavior, and in devastation knowing that she was about to lose her children through the court system the next morning. Yet—in her world she cannot resist the calls of crack and cocaine, even knowing in advance the drug addiction causes bondage, pain, and suffering after use. Another homeless elderly man presents to the ER from wearing only his underwear in public. He was found yelling at the sky, barefooted, extremely disheveled, malodorous, hungry, and with coals of blackness on his legs and feet. I found him lying on the floor on a mattress in despair, but even in despair and frailty he was able to thank me when I brought him a bagged lunch to eat.
Suddenly my eyes became affixed on a mid-age man further down the hallway who was placed on a 72-hour detention for psychiatric evaluation, and treatment for being a threat of danger to himself, a danger to others, and he was determined to be a gravely disabled adult. He was lying on the floor struggling to get up from the mattress. As he got up from the floor, I noticed that he had cerebral palsy as he moved rigidly and violently to ambulate down the hallway. However, his behavior and mood was not fitting or compatible with society due to his psychotic relapse. This vulnerable individual was disorganized in his thought processes, and his speech was impoverished. I could hear the demons talking through him violently. He presented to the ER after reportedly breaking a window at his board and care group home, and attempting to cut his wrist with the broken glass. Usually cutters
or those who attempt to cut their wrists commit this act for emotional release, or when they are reaching out for help. In addition, he was later found walking into traffic, paranoid, and constantly talking about suicide. He was leaking with a malodorous scent, and his thoughts were disjointed. Then suddenly the patient bursts into tears, stating he didn’t know if his sister was alive or not. Then he states, I have glass in me, and I know I’m going to die.
Upon examination, it was later determined that he had smoked marijuana or crack
that day, but he didn’t know which. He had a preoccupation with suicide ideations and he stated: I just want to die in my sleep.
The medical staff later learned that he had human immunodeficiency virus—HIV, the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome—AIDS.
These are just some scenarios of human sufferings that I witnessed in the midnight hour on one shift
during my nursing practice that demonstrates—a link and connection to the purpose of this book. Although, these examples predominately illustrate sufferings from impaired perceptions and psychological causes, the total man (mind, body, and spirit) can suffer. Human suffering is not just in the hospital settings; it is evident that sufferings are always around us in various forms. We must stay reminded that there is a premise for these conditions and behaviors. Oftentimes, we may even surmise how do people get there?
—meaning in these suffering circumstances.
These cries of vulnerability should raise the bar; heighten our awareness in knowing that effective interventions are essential in this hurting world. The questions are why do we suffer?
or why do upright people suffer?
When you have been through the olive press, the process for a divine purpose empowers you to help someone in the same sufferings. The fact is, pain and suffering— produces—patience and power.
The Apostle Paul reminds us that: And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation
(II Corinthians 1:6, KJV). What’s more, could one of these scenarios be you?
or what would Jesus Christ do in these situations?
Would Jesus point a finger at the person suffering
or would he offer His care, love, and compassion?
According to Galatians 6:1-3 it says:
Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
There is assurance that when you suffer for the cause of Christ you will become empowered to help, effectively minister, and to discern the needs of God’s people.

Typology
Typology is the study of types and shadows of the Holy Bible. What’s more, typology is defined as a replica of the real thing under discussion or a foreshadowing of something that is to be presented. In other words, that which is presented first as a shadow later becomes the actual body. Typology also is a method that uses a familiar thing, and it’s characteristics to portray an unfamiliar object or point. Thus, typology becomes the study of that method. The Bible uses various languages and figures of speech to portray the truth. The main two fields of Typology in the Bible are the OLD TESTAMENT (shadow) and the NEW TESTAMENT (body). The two main characters of typology are ADAM and CHRIST and their associates are—EVE and the CHURCH. To further exclaim this meaning think about the following correlation below:
Typology=Study of Types and Shadows
Old Testament=Shadow
New Testament=Body
