About this ebook
Arlene Peralta
Since my early twenties, I have worked with young people as teacher, counselor, coach, and youth director. During this time, I have enjoyed nurturing the imagination and what can be done if we allow ourselves to dream. To me, the world of fantasy has always been a door to the mind and video games a place to explore what we couldn’t possibly do in reality. I'm a mother of three and nanny to two lovely children. When we play, I see and hear how a quiet young man can coordinate and strategize a mission involving five to nine other players. How we can turn a valley into a kingdom or explore a new frontier with dragons and faeries. I have always encouraged my students and kids to believe in themselves and never think that they can’t simply because that is what they have been told. We are all capable of dreaming; the difference is that some of us take that dream and do what we can to make it real no matter if we have been told it can't happen.

PROLOGUE
I wonder if anyone will ever come?
No, the question isn’t, if…
The question is, when?
They are out there, I know they are…
It was foretold.
But like it was also foretold,
they will not believe in themselves.
They don’t feel worthy, they think they’re ordinary.
They think they are not important…
they are afraid.
Not of what they can do, or what they will learn,
but of what they can be…
and not because they are afraid to learn it,
but because they are afraid others will not accept them.
CHAPTER 1
Do you know who you really are?
Should I tell you a story of a place where time
has no meaning, at least not much?
Where reality and fantasy meet to challenge
the mind in a way only adventure can.
Where your dreams will come true and your
nightmares will face you,
A place where logic and confusion mix…
Should I take you to meet your childhood
playmates and rivals?
Will you face then as real, but know there just an
illusion?… Or are they…
Follow me if you dare to the place you made in
your imagination.
A world of kingdoms and valleys, oceans and
mountains, heroes and villains, fairies and
wizards.
A place where friends are not who or what you
expected.
Follow me to a land of awareness, and possibilities,
follow me into Sereniity…
It was another hot Sunday afternoon, like most so far this summer. Sky was in his basement playing video games with his best friend Mike. They had been out of school for about a month, and they couldn’t think of a better way to spend their time. Besides it was the best thing to do, especially since it was so hot outside. This was turning into one of the hottest summer, it was 105 in the shade.
HA, got you,
Mike yelled, as he put his controller on the table. Sky just looked at him raising an eyebrow. Mike turned and smiled at him raising an eyebrow as well.
Sky shook his head and smiled. It took you long enough; usually you beat me faster than that.
Mike stretched out on the couch, and yawned. If you keep playing like that you’re not going to win at the tournament next week.
Sky, got up and turning the game console off asked Mike, You want to get something to eat?
That was a question that didn’t have to be asked twice, Mike was always hungry and he smiled shaking his head.
They were both in the kitchen making sandwiches, when Sky’s mother walked in. She had been out ‘bargain hunting’, like she put it, at garage sales. Then looking at the messy counter shook her head. As skinny as you guys are, I wonder where you put it all
, she said smiling. The boys picked up the mess, grabbed their plates and went to the table.
Sky was skinny for his age. At twelve he was almost five feet tall, and only weighted 85lbs. Most kids his age where taller and bigger. Mike was 11 and taller than him by 2 inches and weighted over 100 lbs. But it didn’t matter to Sky, he liked being small, because he was more agile than the rest. Besides he had Mike and Franco with him most of the times so no one bother him much.
Sky’s mom put down a bag she was carrying and asked the boys if they could help her bring in the rest. Sky just smiled and looked at Mike. His dad was going to throw a fit like always. He hated when mom went ‘bargain hunting’. He would say, ‘All you do is bring more junk into the house‘. Which was usually true, but there were times she would find cool stuff, like that old bookcase with the weird writings on it, the different pewter figurines, and chess sets. Then there where the odd variety of books and games that where old but interesting. She seemed to find a lot of them with strange places, religions and cultures. Being home schooled Sky liked that. He wasn’t much of a reader, but he liked looking at the pictures, reading the captions, and imagine himself in those far off lands. Sometimes though, he did it to escape.
He had always been a dreamer and a loner as well. Didn’t like to be in crowded areas, but yet he liked to travel. His family did a lot of that, and boy did he have stories. He had been to over 20 states and Mexico. Sky was happy, for the most part, that is if you didn’t count school time. Not that he didn’t like it he just wasn’t sure if he did.
Mike had been his friend for almost 3 years now. They pretty much did everything they could together. Weekends were the best; they would take turns staying in each other’s house, since they lived a few blocks away. Mike would also usually come by after school and see if Sky was there and they would always find something to do. Their friendship was one of true soul, and it was growing into a brotherhood that no one could break.
After they brought the rest of the bags in they sat down to eat while Sky’s mom went through them. I got something for you guys
, she said as she rummaged in a large bag. There was this strange house with a table out front that said ‘PLAY ME IF YOU DARE’.
At those words the boys looked in her direction. I had to stop and look. I know you guys are always looking for something new to tackle. So I figured what the heck.
She kept looking through the bags. There was a strange old man by the table with a cloak on and a long beard, but he seemed nice. He seemed to smile with his eyes.
Then she looked at the boys and rubbed her neck. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that house before.
She had a sort of puzzled look on her face. One the boys matched as they looked at each other. Then she shrugged and went back to her burrowing.
Mike couldn’t resist. Where was the house at?
he asked.
From around the bags came the answer, Somewhere by the high school, I did kinda take a wrong turn into a dead end street, didn’t have a sign on it.
All of a sudden she straightened up. Here it is, the box is kinda old looking but I thought the marks on it where cool.
She gave the box to Mike who began turning it around in his hands. The old man said it would be a great adventure for boys like you.
At this comment they both looked at each other. She was always talking to people about her boys. People Sky didn’t know seemed to know him when they were out by the park or he was at the library. As Sky came back to earth he saw that Mike was staring intently at the center of the box. So mom, what did you tell the man about us?
Sky asked as Mike handed him the box. She was right it did have some very strange looking symbols on it.
Well when I was looking at the games, he asked me where my son was.
Sky looked up at her surprised. I thought you said you never saw the house before.
I hadn’t. When I asked him how he knew I had a son he said that he had seen us together in the park a few times. He also told me that you seemed to be a very unique young man, something I already knew.
At that comment Sky rolled his eyes and looked at Mike. His mom came around the table to put some brightly colored bowl in the sink and ruffled his hair.
Mom, you know I hate it when you do that.
He said fixing it.
His mom just smiled and walked away. Suddenly she stopped and turned to look at them. You know he did tell me your name was strong.
Mike was interested in that comment, What did he say about it?
Said it was both feminine and masculine, of Greek origin and meant ‘to help, defend’, I knew that, but thought it was odd.
She shrugged her shoulders looking at the boys. Sky just smiled, knowing that he was talking about his real name. One he was not too happy with, cause he did get bothered at times for it being a girl’s name.
Mike squinted his eyes looking at him. You don’t look Greek to me
.
Actually you both could be. The Greeks, Romans, and Egyptian all sailed the Atlantic back in the early 1400’s. So you never know how many stayed or had children while in central and South America. Maybe I should give you a class on that sometime.
She started to walk away, and then stopped saying, "Oh by the way, the old man said that you should be
