About this ebook
Aly and Mikey were on their annual summer vacation with their parents. They were at the same lake cabin and visiting the same boring antique shops each and every day. This summer vacation was going to be just like all the others, filled with very little excitement and very little adventure. That is, until they met a curious antique shop attendant offering the gift of adventure through the power of flight. They quickly discovered that the gift proved to be more than they bargained for. Aly and Mikey must rely on their wit and companionship to overcome difficult challenges and even save their lives.
From the curious imagination of A.B. Queen comes an adventurous debut novel, the first of many in The Curiosity Collection. A curious collection of thrilling adventure novels, each following different characters, events, and impossible situations.
A.B. Queen
A.B. Queen, the author of the middle-grade novel The Rings of Flight, loves to create to the depths of their core. Whether it is creating stories, music, or crafts, A.B. Queen is always looking for a new skill to learn or a new item to create. They have been inspired by years and years of immersion in the fantasy and science-fiction realms, such as those of J.R.R. Tolkien, Terry Brooks, and R.L. Stein, along with a deep love and obsession for the pop culture of the 1980s and 1990s. They use this knowledge, inspiration, and obsession to create stories for everyone to enjoy.

A Curiosity Collection Story
image-placeholderimage-placeholderChapter One
Every day there are countless phenomena, things we can’t explain, and unique occurrences happening to creatures all over this globe. Incredible forces of nature, hidden secrets, and forgotten powers spread out through the vast universe. Many creatures don’t want to see or even acknowledge these spectacles and have learned to ignore them. Others don’t want to understand because the science they rely on can’t explain it. There are others who say these are simply miracles and pass it off as acts of a greater power. Well, I like to think there are some things that don’t need an explanation and should be enjoyed for what they are. I, of course, am talking about opportunities.
Meet Makan and Alya. They don’t like being called these names though. Their parents only called them by their birth names when they were in trouble, but most days, their parents and friends referred to them as Mikey and Aly. I would like to believe we are all friends here, so, I will continue to call them Mikey and Aly through the rest of the story.
Aly was the older of the two but never reminded Mikey that she was older. She never felt like she had to, or even wanted to, for her age didn’t matter to her. Mikey did like to remind her that he was bigger than her. This never mattered as they never competed in anything to do with their size. He only relied on this when arguing over the last piece of cake and he would say, "I am a growing boy. I need the food." She would then cave and give him the last piece. After all, she loved her brother, she just wouldn’t be caught dead saying it out loud to anyone.
They were both excellent students and never struggled with their grades. They both had many friends but were often seen out and about with each other more than their friends. They never wanted to admit it, but they were each other’s best friends. They wouldn’t realize this until later in the summer. They were both healthy, fit, fast, and usually fearless. They shared many of the same hobbies and would often compete in these hobbies. There was never a prize, never a trophy, they just liked to challenge each other every chance they got.
Mikey and Aly lived on a quiet street, in a quiet town, and lived quiet lives. They regularly thought their lives were too quiet and often needed more adventure. They would beg their parents to take them to adventurous places and try new and exciting things. Mikey and Aly each had a need to find the next thrill, something new to excite them. This usually involved them reenacting the newest comic issue they just read. Pretending to be lightning-fast or as strong as ten humans. They had a pretty large comic collection that gave them hundreds of stories to act out.
Once a month, they asked their parents to take them to the local theme park, Funzone Amusement and Thrill Park, but were always negotiated down to each rent a movie or game of their choice. They tried not to blame their parents too much. After all, they had been boring for all of Mikey and Aly’s lives. It wasn’t their fault for being boring, it’s just what adults do and who they are.
Their mom was an accountant for a small firm downtown, while their dad was a dog food salesman. They both had these jobs for as long as Mikey and Aly could remember. They both worked nine to five Monday through Friday, had the usual holidays off, and another four weeks throughout the year. During two of these weeks, the entire family would go to the same town up north and rent the same cabin.
Mikey and Aly didn’t think it was possible, but this town was even quieter than their hometown. Some would even say more boring. Not to Mom and Dad though, they both loved this town and the cabin. Not as much as they loved shopping for antiques. Shopping for antiques was not an ideal way for Mikey and Aly to spend a day, let alone two weeks of their summer vacation. Going through the same shops year after year, seeing the same old dusty items on the shelves year after year. Every morning, they would explore a different antique store. The town was littered with them. Mikey and Aly both knew they would go clinically insane if it weren’t for their daily visit to the ice cream shop downtown. It was Mom and Dad's way to bribe them as they felt guilty making them hang out and explore the dirty aisles of the antique stores.
Yup, the same old trip and the same old cabin every year. If I am recalling this accurately, that cabin trip should be coming up any day now. I think it is time we check in on Mikey and Aly to see what they are up to.

Kids, time for dinner,
Mom yelled upstairs to the two of them. They dropped the controllers to the game they were playing and ran downstairs to the kitchen. Both went as fast as they could, trying to beat the other. They arrived in the kitchen at the same time and sat at the table at the same time. They never said who was the winner but grinned at each other, thinking one was the winner over the other.
How was school today?
Dad asked, already sitting at the table dishing out the veggie casserole onto their plates.
It was fine,
Mikey replied, we watched a video in class about the solar system.
That’s exciting,
replied Mom.
Yeah, I guess. Would be cooler if we were able to go to the planets and explore instead of just looking at them.
I’m sure your real family on Mars would like that, Mikey,
Aly said, snickering.
What about you, Aly? What did you learn today?
Dad asked.
"It was a lot of math, and then we continued to work
