About this ebook

GPS is an anology for mentoring. Guidance is given when the driver sets the coordinates. A lot of people dream small and move with little confidence. With GPS you gain confidence by believing what you have inside of you is greatness. When you understand the formula for success, and practice it, you win. It takes making a clear choice, a definite decision, developing yourself, and putting purpose to action. GPS directions.

It takes a village to raise a child. It takes a community to be involved with each other, and every child. That is a true community! Where is that now? Neighbors barely know each other!

From my point of view, we are separated, but together. We are different, but all the same. How do we live together productively, and respectfully? We have to find the mentoring connection within our circles.

Life is all about our relationships. Life is all about our stories, and the experience.

The key is this . . . if you love yourself and work on yourself and do not accept failure as an ending, success is yours.

The GPS destination is that if you love yourself, develop yourself, and believe in the process, you will be successful.

    Habits Affect Results

I dedicate this book to Larry and Beatrice Wood, the greatest parents on the planet!

I am who I am because I have been blessed to have two great people in my life who consistently had my back through the ups and downs. Most people I know are not that fortunate. Regardless of your circumstances, you have to know that there are individuals in this world who care about people, because we know that we are all different, but we are all the same. We are all connected by divine design. There are people who are willing to share their experiences, and time, in an effort to build and support, and ask for nothing in return. True mentors only want you to return the same love to someone else!

Before you are open to receive that, you must believe that you are worthy of that support. You have to want better for yourself and seek to get better each and every day. Always be willing to ask questions. Always be open-minded, and treat people with the dignity that you deserve as well.

Stay on course, and use your inner GPS to success! Dream big, have faith, and remember, no one can do it for you. It is up to you to set your own coordinates in your GPS!

    Preface

When I was seventeen years old, I was a junior five-foot-ten point guard on a high school basketball team that had two prior losing seasons. I was a starter on our varsity team for each of the two losing seasons. It wasn’t the fact that we didn’t have skills; we just never learned how to play together. We never learned the power of fundamentals. We lost a lot of games that were under a ten-point margin. We were getting close on will, but losing because we lacked strong coaching.

Personally, I never had a great season, but I must have caught the attention of a couple of coaches because I had received a few letters at my home that invited me to come play with their colleges. Unfortunately, on the last game of my junior year, I suffered what is called an ACL tear in my right knee. In 1989, I didn’t know what an ACL was until I went to get the results of my x-ray from the doctor.

The doctor nonchalantly came into the room and said to me, "You have a tear in your anterior cruciate ligament in that knee. You’re
