Mouse and Dragon

Mouse and Dragon by Ian T. Walker is a collection of fourteen stories for young adults with love and compassion as the underlying theme.

They were originally written as adjuncts to Walkers Lilly and Ian, Mouse and Dragon book, published by Partridge Singapore, which is a love story.

Lilly has the astrological star sign of a mouse, while Ian is a dragon. They were inspired by the authors love for Lilly. While in China, the author visited a book publisher with other childrens books. The publisher shied away from publishing them because, as he said, They do not teach the children anything.

Walker then asked himself what the best thing was to teach a child, hence the creation of these fourteen stories about love, featuring Mouse and Dragon.

1….Mouse and Dragon

Mouse lived in a little house next to a river and grew potatoes for a living. Dragon moved in next door and began fishing in the river. Mouse thought Dragon was destructive because he caught all the big fish in the river, even though Mouse thought he was handsome. Dragon thought Mouse was destructive because she dug up the river bank and disturbed the soil too much, even though she had a lovely long tail and nice long whiskers.

Then came a big drought and no potatoes grew and fish were scarce. After the drought it rained very hard and both their houses were washed downstream and Dragon’s fire was put out.

Mouse and Dragon were neighbours.

There were no potatoes and no fish! Mouse and Dragon were lost in the forest and they were very hungry. They both wandered about looking for food. Then by chance they suddenly met and began to talk. Mouse thought Dragon was very nice because he wanted to share the only fish he caught with her. Dragon thought Mouse was very kind because she found one wild potato and wanted to share it with him. But they could not cook the food so Mouse lit Dragon’s fire.

From then on they became very friendly neighbours and Dragon only caught medium sized fish because he had so many potatoes to eat and Mouse did not dig up the ground so much as she had so many fish to eat.

Eventually they built a large house together and were married and lived happily ever after.

Moral of the story:

When we share our treasures we become rich.

2….Mouse and Dragon Go Fishing

Early one morning Mouse and Dragon were sitting on the river bank fishing and watching the water slowly swirling by. All of a sudden a huge fish jumped out of the water and gobbled up Mouse!

Mouse gets a bite.

Dragon dived into the water and chased fish into the depths of the deepest pool. He caught fish and punched him in the nose and out popped Mouse into Dragon’s arms. Dragon quickly took Mouse to the river bank and told her to light a big fire. Mouse ran to find some wood.
