The world today regards the Europeans as the fathers of Science and Technology and those who brought Light to the Black race. But if history says that civilization began in Africa, is it not correct to say that it was the Black race that taught the world Science and Technology?
- Were the Blacks not the first Emperors of the world?
- Is it not on record that at a point in human history, Africans were the most intelligent and the best instructed people in the world?
- When the Europeans came to Africa, did they not see the Al-Azhur University in Egypt, University of Fez in Morocco and the University of Timbuktu in Mali?

Tiebet Joshua

Tiebet Joshua was born in Abiakpo Ikot Abasi-Inyang in Obot Akara, a local government area of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. He had his undergraduate work in accounting in the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Tiebet is the CEO of Tiebet Nig. Ltd., a company established in 1997, which specializes in production of agricultural products for export. Tiebet is also an astute politician. He is a Christian of long standing who got baptized in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in 1973. He developed an unusual love for Bible studies/research as a result of the activities of the lay ministry of the Episcopal Church in Nigeria, which has now given birth to this book and other unpublished works by him.

FOREWORD

In his treatise, Tiebet Joshua has painstakingly proven that the world as an institution originated from Africa, and that Africans were the custodians of science, technology and knowledge in general. Without Africa Europe and the rest of the world would not have been civilized. The Egyptian Pyramids had existed long before the Greeks came to limelight in 330BC. Pythagoras, the famous scientist, was brought up in Egypt. The idea of a university started in Egypt and spread to other parts of Africa like Morocco and Timbuktu. Nimrod was the first to establish an empire in Mesopotamia in 2281 BC and through his ingenuity the first architectural masterpiece the world knew was invented, as typified in the Tower of Babel. Art and science had flourished in Egypt long before Joseph arrived there in 1728 BC. The truth is that without Africa, the world would not have known civilization.

But unfortunately, Africa has suffered much retrogression in scientific and political developments. The author traces such retrogression to the fact that Africa, through Nimrod, the first Africa rebel in the Bible, alienated herself from God. But Africa will certainly rise to take its rightful position if its citizens repent and go back to God. They need to throw off the yoke of European imperialism and wake up from self-pity, appreciate their worth and have faith in God. African leaders must learn humility and accept genuine criticism in the process of governance.

If they govern in consonance with moral and biblical principles, Africa will sooner or later realize its God-given potentialities. And God will certainly fulfill his purpose for Africa by bringing the headquarters of the millennium reign of Christ to Africa, as He did with the first Adam.

This book is illuminating and has actually exposed European mercenary greed in Africa, as well as break the myth of European superiority. It is likely to evoke a lot of controversy. It is a must for every library.

1.1 MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE BLACK RACE

The Negro, many have believed, is a man without a past. Black Africa, South of the Sahara Desert have never raised themselves much above the level of the beasts… (There are) no ingenious manufacturers, no arts, no science… (Hume, 1875).

If there is any race of the world that has been misunderstood and so little is known about them, it is the Black race. Not only so in terms of their past contributions to the development of the world, but the reasons for their present travails have not been properly diagnosed. Instead of the world to find out the reason(s) of the present backwardness of the Black race, the world holds the black race in contempt, misconstrues her past, and misdirects her future hoping that she remains in an exploitable condition permanently. As far as such people are concerned, the black race is not important, and so such people don’t expect anything good from the black race except negative things. And because the world has already believed that Africa is a dark continent and comprises nations of beggars, the world is unable to appreciate the Black race, even for her past contributions to the development of the world.

This brings us to the first purpose for writing this book, which is on the history of the advancement of man in Science and Technology. From the primitive man that he was, man has become highly scientific today. In which of the continents did man begin his scientific advancement? Or, which race in the world started Philosophy, Science and Technology?

Today the Europeans have almost successfully made everyone to believe that Philosophy, Science and Technology started with them. Those among them who give Africa some credit say that Elementary Science, which could not avail much, started in Africa but that Plato was the father of philosophy. But are the European views correct? Who really and truly amongst Europe, Asian and Africa first had the knowledge of science and technology? And who taught who science and technology?

Why is it that Africa is hardly credited for her contributions to the development of the world? Why do other races take delight in exploiting Africa and her people, and always expecting Africa to remain in exploitable condition, without the least credit to Africa for making them great? Consider it, which nation of the world has become great without climbing through the ladder of Africa’s past scientific foundation and Africa’s enormous resources?

It would have been impossible to open up the New World and to use it as a constant generator of wealth, had it not been for African labor. There were no other alternatives: the American (Indian) population was virtually wiped out and Europe’s population was too small for settlement overseas at that time. (Rodney, 1986)

The big question is: Has the world credited Africans for making the New World great? Instead of the world to appreciate Africans for leading the world out of darkness to light and greatness, you hear the Europeans pay great tribute to the Mesopotamian civilization, as if that civilization was different from the civilization of the children of Ham that originated from Egypt. Tell them that the Mesopotamian civilization was of the black civilization and they argue that it was a Semitic civilization.

Even European Christians happily accept that their forefathers (i.e., the seven sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras) migrated from Mesopotamia to Europe. But tell them that for that reason, their forefathers immigrated to Europe from Africa and were blacks and they argue that Mesopotamia had never been part of Africa and that Europeans have always been White from the beginning.

We shall see whether the Europeans have always been White from the beginning, or whether their forefathers who left Mesopotamia to Europe had been blacks. But since Bible history shows that Mesopotamia was part of the land of the children of Ham and its founders and leaders were Ethiopians (Gen.10:6-20), it follows therefore that:

• The children of Japheth or the forefathers of Europeans, who went to Europe from Mesopotamia, actually went out of Africa, since Mesopotamia was also known then as the Land of Nimrod.

• Mesopotamian civilization was an African civilization since Mesopotamia was the capital of Nimrod’s kingdom (Gen. 10:9-10).

Secular history has also upheld this Bible position, that the founders of the Mesopotamian civilization were blacks, the children of Ham – Africans.

This has been noted by Ashimolowo (2007:200):

If the Sumerians were said to be the black-headed people, if they were Hamitic, and, in the words of A. R. Fausset, spoke the Galla language of the ancient occupants of the land of Ethiopia, then the racist belief that the Black man never invented anything in antiquity becomes very weak.

Yet, in spite of these great contributions from the black race, the world has refused to credit anything good to her. Instead of appreciating the black race for civilizing the world, they say that it was in Greece that philosophy began. This deliberate effort by the Europeans to cover the truth about the black race over the years has only left the Europeans in great ignorance about their past. Still, the greatest irony of it all is why the black people have always seen themselves the way other races see them!

This reminds me of my experience in my first lecture in History of Science and Technology in the university. My lecturer, a doctorate degree holder in his field started the lecture by telling us that the first people to philosophize were the Greeks. He told us a lot of stories about Plato and other European philosophers. When he did not mention any African among the fathers of philosophy or say much about African philosophy, I raised my hand up and said, Excuse me sir, but I was taught in Primary School that civilization started in Egypt. He answered by asking me, What is Civilization? He then answered it to mean, When people started to live in permanent places and not roaming about like animals. I was not satisfied with his answer and so I said, But sir, Plato paid tribute to Egypt as a place he was trained. At that point, my teacher got angry and told me to take what he was teaching me because Egypt that I was referring to was not credited with achievement in philosophy, because she did not put to record her philosophical thoughts.

This is what I am talking about! If an African teacher at the university level could still believe and teach his African students the propaganda of our colonizers fifty five years after Independence, that the first people to philosophize were the Greeks, then you can see the extent of damage we have done ourselves by believing all the Europeans teach without proper and independent researches.

Today I know better, that Plato only became the father of philosophy to the Europeans after he was taught philosophy in Africa.

This is a matter of considerable importance, because it was through the Greeks that literature, art, architecture, and the knowledge of how to ‘write came into Italy, so that Roman Civilization is the debtor of the Greeks, just as the Greek is the debtor of Phoenicia, and the Phoenicians the debtors of Egypt. (Davies, 1928:110)

A fair consideration to what Davies is saying above is that, while Africans developed into nations long ago and had taken Science and Technology to considerable heights, and had graduated foreign Students such as Joseph Jacob Isaac, Moses Amram, etc. from their universities in Africa since about 1706 - 1562 years B. C, Europe was only waking up to evolve into nations in about 700 years B. C. After all, was not Rome as a nation founded around 753 B. C.? Which of the European nations knew anything about self-governance, science and technology, or religion during the first, second, or third dynasty of the Egyptian Kingdom? (The eleventh dynasty was founded in about 2160 B.C.)

This is the major focus of this book: To present the black race in her true perspective. That is, to look into the history of the black race and to see what contributions, if any, she has made in the development of the world in terms of religion, science and technology. This is important because as we have seen, the black race is said to have no indigenous technology and history. For this reason, it is the Asians, Europeans and the Americans that the world pays great tributes to as those that have always make the world a better place for man.

In honest assessment and examination, America may be the most powerful nation of the world today and may have contributed so much to the development of the world. Nevertheless, if America’s contributions to the development of the world are examined more closely, her contributions might be a mere scratch of that of Egypt in the past, considering that America is not yet up to 300 years as a nation. Going to the moon, making airplanes to fly, computers and other scientific feats of today are based mainly on mathematics principles which black Egyptians in Africa taught the world. So, who should have the greater credit?

This brings to mind the proverbial egg and chicken: which one comes first, the chicken or the egg? Who, between the man who invented an item and the man who used the invention to produce something more, should get the loudest ovation? I think that the world has given undue ovation to the children of Japheth whose calling, based on the meaning of Japheth, their father, is merely to expand or improve upon what others have developed already, as they are faithfully doing today. In other words, since Europe’s Science or civilization of today depended on the black race’s civilization of yesterday, (Hume, 1875) was in error to have said that:

"I am apt to suspect the Negros and in general all the other species of men to be naturally inferior to white. There never was any civilized nation of any other complexion than white or even any individual eminent in action of speculation".

I don’t personally have any problem with the wild and spurious claims of the Europeans because of my belief in the Bible history about them, which I know is true. Since the Bible calls the Europeans Gentiles (Gen.10:5); that is, people who were far from the world scene, they can be excused for claiming that they are the fathers of science and technology, and that they are innately superior to others including the black race who taught them science and technology. After all, there is no crime in anyone claiming to be the best in the world. You may chose not to believe the testimony of Herodotus, who opined that Pythagoras studied mathematics for 21 years in Egypt, but please don’t ignore the record of the Bible that Nimrod, an Ethiopian, was the first and only Emperor of the world. He taught the world how to make bricks and used them for building:

"And they said one to another, Come, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar" (Gen.11:3). American Standard Version

I no doubt appreciate the contributions of the Asian, American and the European nations to the development of the world today, and agree that they exert much influence in our world, but the truth is that, whatever they have contributed to the betterment of the human race today is so insignificant compare to what the children of Ham (Africans); as the pioneer rulers of the world and those who civilized the world have contributed from the beginning.

Many African nations in the past were great nations that were feared far and wide, and the world depends on their contributions till today. For instance, describing how powerful Ethiopia was in the past, and showing that Ethiopia had developed fast boats that sailed the Nile River to the Mediterranean Sea before most European nations were founded, Isaiah said:

Ah, the land of the rustling of wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia; that sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of papyrus upon the waters, (saying), Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation tall and smooth, to a people terrible from their beginning onward, a nation that treadeth out and treadeth doom, whose land the rivers divide. (Isaiah 18:1-2)

The second purpose for writing this book is on the genesis of religion, true religion in particular. It is held by the Europeans that priesthood was given to Shem; hence, the children of Shem are the professors of religion. Today, the world has held on to this as if that was true.

But amongst the children of Japheth, Shem and Ham, who first returned to walking with God in righteousness after the scattering at Babel? From the Bible, it could be seen that the greatest contribution from Africans to the development and betterment of the world is in the area of religion. Africans were in the service of God before the Jewish nation was founded. Was Abraham not an idol worshiper in Ur? Was it not until Abraham went to Canaan and Africans preached the gospel to him before he repented? Was Melchizedek, the first priest that God appointed in the world, not a black man? Was it not Melchizedek who taught Abraham about God, how to walk with God in righteousness? Thus, Priesthood was not given to Shem but Ham. Therefore, the call of Abraham was not the beginning of true religion after the dispersion at Babel.

Moses was brought up in the palace of the Pharaoh of Egypt as a prince of Egypt and, as such, Moses was an idolater, a magician, an occultist and everything the pharaoh of Egypt represented, for he "was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was mighty in words and in deeds - magical performances" (Acts 7:22). When he left Egypt at the age of forty, he was still an idolater and a magician. He stayed in the household of priest Jethro for another forty years before he was called by God.

Is it therefore not clear from the above that it was in the household of priest Jethro, an African of Ethiopian descent, that Moses was first introduced to the gospel and the true God? In other words, was it not Africans who first preached the gospel to Moses? Since it was Melchizedek, a son of Ham, that ordained Abraham the servant of God, as well as ordained Levi a priest for the Jews, has the Bible not clearly shown that priesthood belongs to the children of Ham, since priesthood originated with the children of Ham?

Another fallacy about Africa is that Africans knew nothing about true religion except paganism until the Europeans brought them Christianity. But is Christianity the first true religion? Were the Europeans the first to bring Christianity to Africa? Who, between the Europeans and Africans first, came in contact with the Bible and the Christian religion? From historical records, Europeans did not bring Christianity to Africa. Christianity flourished in Africa first before it was taken to Europe. The reason for this is that it was Africans that gave birth to Christianity at Antioch; therefore, Christianity is African religion. Europeans did not start Christian missionary work but Africans did, and were also the first people to preach Christianity to the Greeks (Europeans). With all these, believing that it was Europeans who brought Christianity to Africa is gross ignorance.

Many are not aware that it was Africans that propounded most of the world religious thoughts that we hold on to today. The meaning of this is that Africans had been the custodians of true religion and the knowledge of God from Adam till the coming of the written law through Moses. Remember, Abraham was not the first man to start walking with God in righteousness after the flood. When he went to Canaan, Abraham met children of Ham, who were walking with God. Thus, both true religion and paganism started in Africa.

The position of Africa and her people today in world affairs seems nothing to write home about. In all fronts she is written off. Concerned people all over the world are asking, what went wrong? If the black race was the royal race of yesterday, what has turned the black people to hewers of woods and drawers of water of the world today? Many African nations have even tried some economic recovery programs, all in attempts to move Africa forward again but to no avail. Why does it look like there is no hope for Africa? In a special chapter titled, The Burdens of Africa, the causes of Africa’s backwardness are highlighted. It is my hope that if African people, especially the leaders avoid these faults and rather bring quality leadership into our governance, Africa will move forward again.

As a result of the various problems facing Africa, the world has come to accept that Africa is a God-forsaken continent, that nothing good has ever come out of Africa or ever will. The question is, has God forsaken Africa? Africa and her people have done much for God, such that for thousands of years Africa had been God’s dependable servant and tool in the hands of God in His effort to redeem man and wipe out rebellion on the earth. No other race in the world has God ever so used in accomplishing his important goals. No other continent is mentioned in the Bible like Africa. What then is God’s purpose for Africa and her people? In this book, the roles of Africa in God’s plan for the world are examined. One of such role is the fact that, contrary to popular opinion, Africans and not the Jews were ordained to be the Servants or Priests of the Lord God of Shem (Jesus). Another is that, while the rest of the world is hoping to go to Heaven to spend their eternity, we in Africa are waiting to live in a new city, our New Jerusalem that shall come to be located in the land of Ham or Africa (Rev.21:2-3).

In this work, therefore, the black race is made to realize that notwithstanding our current travails, we have not been and will not be forsaken by God. Rather, we are being chastised and purified in order that we might be fit to stand again in our Priestly position and return the world to God as we enter the last lap of God’s redemption plans for the world. And until the black race rediscover themselves and understand that they were created the priestly race of all humanity, their current position in world affairs would continue to haunt its people, and consequently, even the best of the black man will continue to consider himself inferior to the other races. For example, in all probability, an African-American today is likely going to feel bad, maybe even bitter, for having been sold as a slave to the land of the whites, until he realizes that he is where he is today for an assignment from God, and that he is the Joseph of our days. Until the African-American understands that he was planted in advance in America, to preserve righteousness in the rot days when Europe and America will no longer love to retain the values of God in their lives; he is likely going to drift along with them in the secular system and confusion such that has already engulfed the European and American societies.

Watch out for what will become of the world as the gay ministers in Europe and America continue to interpret the Bible in their own version. Until the black man discovers that he is the ordained Priest of God and custodian of the values of God, and that God has always relied on the black man to achieve His plans for man, he will continue to walk with God in a borrowed pattern – foreign style.

That is the major thrust of this book, which is to call the attention of the world to the great achievements of the black race in the past, and let the black man know his role in God’s plans for the world, or his mandate from God. This knowledge will liberate him from the shackles of foreign values and make him love God the more. And in turn will restore his self-worth and dignity of the past, to the glory of God.

CHAPTER TWO

AFRICA’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE WORLD

2.0 AFRICANS CIVILIZED THE WORLD

Before even the British came into relations with our people, we were a developed people, having our own institutions, having our own ideas of government. (Jasely-Hayford, Quoted in Rodney, 1986)

At a certain given time, there were on the African continent, centers of Negro civilization whose traces have not only been recovered, but were brilliantly radiated beyond the limits of the Savannah and the desert. (Price-Mars. Quoted in Rodney,1986).

Every tribe, race, or nation has its own way of doing things. Call it arts, science or local technology and you would not be wrong. The general belief among the Europeans is that Africa is a continent where men, by their personal efforts, have never raised themselves much above the level of beasts.

Hegel (1953) in a public lecture declared, Africa is no historical part of the world. It has no movement or development to exhibit. But countering this kind of reasoning, Prof. Armstrong pointed out that; "No human being is so socially or culturally backward that it has nothing to teach other cultures, or so culturally advanced that it can’t borrow something from others (lHSN Vol.U No.1, 1960).

On his part, Rodney (1986:11) wrote:

Every people have shown a capacity for independently increasing their ability to live a more satisfactory life through exploiting the resources of nature. Every continent independently participated in the early epochs of the extension of man’s control over his environment - which means in effect that every continent can point to a period of economic development. Africa, being the original home of man, was obviously a major participant in the processes in which human groups displayed an ever increasing capacity to extract a living from the natural environment. Indeed, in the early period, Africa was the focus of the physical development of man as such, as distinct from other living beings.

That is the truth the Europeans have always tried to deny about Africa. They are always ready to deny, suppress or destroy records of good things from Africa as well as frustrate or even stop developmental efforts from Africans in order to keep Africa down for the purpose of exploiting her. But when it comes to bad things, whether they originate from Africa or not, they are credited to Africa and her people. A good example of what I’m saying is the origin of AIDS.
