ABOUT THE COVER
When I first joined the U.S Navy in the fall of 1970, I decided, like most sailors, that I wanted a tattoo. I did not have a clue what I wanted. I just knew that I wanted something. It could not just be body art. It had to have a message. It had to say something and mean something.
Life has a tendency to take us to those places that we will not willingly go to on our own. You know the place. It is that place that defines who we really are inside.
For my fifty-sixth birthday, I finally broke down and purchased my only tattoo. For thirty-nine years, I waited for the perfect tattoo for me.
The cover of this book is a re-creation of that monumental moment when all of the pieces of the puzzle finally came together.
The angel represents God’s human creation-Man. The struggle between good and evil is represented by the Demon in the fire and the angel’s halo in his right hand. We are in a tug of war with good and evil. The fiery sword in the left hand represents the battle that we are engaged in everyday of our lives.
The name ANDERSON
appears on the belt of the angel.
After a lengthy battle with the Demons of the past, I broke through to a marvelously peaceful revelation—Hence ROMANS 9:20
Can the clay say to the potter, Why have you made me this way?
INTRODUCTION
The game of G.O.L.F. is a very unique sport. When the game was first conceived, it was intended to be a gentleman’s club only. In fact, the acronym actually means Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden. Thankfully, it has evolved way beyond that.
Today, there are many wonderful female golfers that have helped to bring golf into the lives of a lot of people. God bless the ladies that play golf. The most wonderful part though, is what golf has brought "into" the lives of a lot of people.
It is all about the game—well maybe.
My natural love for the art of this game was personally developed while fighting personal demons on the golf course. Besides fighting every swing to improve my own skills, I also fought the things that warred daily against my mind. It was on the grass course that the real course became apparent to me.
With that thought in mind, I would like to present an idea about golf in life and, the life, that is in golf. There is something about the game that extrudes beyond the boundaries of the fairways and enters into the very fiber of the lives of men and women everywhere. Anyway you slice it, golf comes into play in each of our lives every day.
Pull aside from the rat race, sit a moment and ponder with me, the possibilities if you will. Perhaps there is something between the lines that will speak of the heart of God in every man.
Winston Churchill was quoted as saying that Golf is a peculiar game whose instruments of play are ill-equipped for the purpose at hand.
It is evident that Mr. Churchill had played more than one round of golf in his lifetime. It really does seem ludicrous to try and put a small sphere in a round cup using tools that are shaped funny and will not respond to our will. How much like life is that, Huh?
This book is not exactly about the game of golf in the grass. However, understanding the game of golf in the grass is an essential quality that will help you
enjoy the true purpose of this book.
I would like to explain the game in such a way as to help the non-believing, non-golfers better understand how very important the play
is and how it really can influence every area of our lives. Exactly how that influence plays out though, is up to each individual player on the course.
When I think about the game, several thoughts percolate through my mind. Of course there is the game itself. It really is the game of Kings. Only a fellow that loves the game can understand this. When a gentleman actually understands the art of golf, the love of life itself begins to develop a whole new meaning. Deep-rooted in this multi-faceted love is also, an understanding of the ‘Gentlemen Kings’ who actually play the game.
Next, there is that masculine challenge in men and that competitive edge in women, that causes the blood of every golfer to run hot. Out on the course, pitted against nature and our shortcomings, we catch a sneak preview of real life. There is something about being on the course on a beautiful day with just you, your clubs and God. (If you are one of those people that doesn’t believe in God, play golf. You’ll at least learn to call on His name quickly.)
The national average for a round of golf is one hundred and ten strokes for eighteen holes, and that is if you play fair. Already you feel better don’t you. You should. You can’t win, you can only play. If you play well, winning against your friends will be your only carnal reward that will slightly stroke your ego. Deeper however, is the powerful teacher that the course becomes to an open mind and heart. It is all about you, life and the course. Whether you play good or bad, you have only yourself to blame.
Probably the most beneficial thought that golf provokes is what the game teaches us about life itself. I am reminded of the proverb that an old
