God, Is This My Man? Part II - Hilda A. Stephens

    MJ’s Wedding

Marco arrives at the wedding to meet Marco Jr., better known as MJ. MJ waves to his father.

    Dad, we are over here.

    They embraced and laughter begins.

Hi MJ. How are you feeling today?

Dad, I’m so nervous. I can’t wait for this day to be over.

I know son, but something good will happen later.

Dad, you’ll love Joanna. She’s beautiful, funny, and smart.

If you are pleased, then I am pleased. Where is your mother?

Dad, please be nice. She’s with Dr. Cruz.

I promise to be nice. I have a wonderful woman waiting for me in DC.

Dad, why didn’t you bring Sheena with you?

I need to take care of some business with your mother.

    What kind of business, Dad?

    MJ, concentrate on your wedding.

The groom and the best man take their place in the church. Marco is escorted by an usher and seated next to Anita, his ex-wife. Anita feels a bit uncomfortable.

Hello, Marco, you look very nice. I’m glad you decided to come to MJ’s wedding.

Thanks, Anita. How have you been?

    I’m wonderful, Marco.

Is that right? How is Cruz treating you?

Marco, please, why are you going there?

It’s only a question, Anita. Why can’t you answer the question?

Marco, it’s none of your business.

    Where is Cruz?

I asked Cruz to sit a few rows back.

Why isn’t your man sitting with you?

Marco, I respect you. This is our son’s wedding.

Thank you for having good sense.

Marco, I don’t need this from you. I deserve better.

You deserve better? Please tell me why you’re dating Cruz.

It’s my choice, and you can’t control my life. MJ is our son. I’m not your wife. Besides, how is Ms. Jackson?

Ms. Jackson, soon-to-be Mrs. Albright, is doing exceptionally well.

    That’s nice to know.

Dr. Cruz looks on; he gets up from his seat and walks over to Anita. He asks, Is everything okay? Good evening, Judge.

Good Evening, Cruz, and how may we help you?

I came over to check on Anita. Is everything all right?

Anita is fine, we are doing fine.

Thanks Judge, but this visit is about Anita, my woman.

Cruz, will you please take your seat before I do something that’s not nice.

    Anita turns to Marco.

Please, you promise to be nice.

Anita, you better tell your man to take his seat.

Santiago, please. I’ll see you after the wedding.

Okay, Anita, if you need anything, baby, I’m right here for you.

    Marco is totally pissed off.

Anita, I would appreciate the next time MJ is having anything, leave your boyfriend at home.

The wedding begins. MJ and Joanna repeat their vows. Marco thinks about Sheena.

Sheena is relaxing, waiting for Braxton to call.

    The phone rings.

    Hi Sheena, this is Braxton.

Hi Braxton, I have been waiting for your call.

Is this a good time to talk?

Yes, but I’m expecting a call from Marco at any time.

I see. First of all, I like to say you look good. I mean damn good.

    Good enough to—

Ms. Jackson, don’t play with me.

Who’s playing? I do look that good.

I miss you, Sheena. I thought about you a lot in England.

Don’t be silly, Braxton. You don’t know me.

It’s seems like I do. What I hear from my godfather, you’re the best woman in the world. Nathan thinks so anyway."

Braxton, and that’s the way I’m going to keep it between Nat and I.

Sheena, I need to see you, may I come over?

Braxton, I’m expecting a call from Marco. I can’t. Let’s try for another time.

Sheena, why do you keep putting me off?

Braxton, you are Nat’s godchild and this is not good.

    You are not dating Nathan.

Yes, that’s right, but Nat is my friend, and Marco is my man.

    I could be your lover.

    Is that right, Braxton?

Yes, if you give me the opportunity.

    To do what, Braxton?

    Make you happy.

    Braxton, we can’t do this.

    I need to see you.

    Braxton, I’m sorry but I can’t.

You can’t, or you won’t see me?

    Braxton, my answer is no.

Why are you afraid of me?

    I’m not afraid of you.

Could it be because you have feelings for me?

Braxton, let’s get something straight. I don’t have any feelings for you. We are friends. Let it go.

No, I can’t. Sheena, I need to see you tonight.

Braxton, I can’t. I got to go. Marco is calling.

    She quickly hangs up.

    Hello.

Hi, baby, the wedding is over. We are at the reception hall.

How are things going with you?

I’m fine, but Anita, that’s a different story.

    What’s wrong with Anita?

    I don’t know besides stupid.

    What do you mean, Marco?

Cruz has Anita like a puppet on a string.

Marco, Anita is not your concern.

Anita is my son’s mother. Anita can’t do anything unless she asks Cruz what he thinks.

Marco, stop hating. I believe you are jealous.

Over Anita? Please, you got to be kidding.

    Then leave Anita alone.

    I will when I finish…

Marco, what are you up too?

I’m making sure my son have everything he needs.

Are you still coming home on Friday?

    Yes, are you feeling better?

Yes, I miss you. Please come home soon.

Why don’t you pack a bag and come to Atlanta?

You want me to come to Atlanta?

    That’s what I said.

Do you really want me come?

Yes. I’m sorry for not bringing you with me. I made a big mistake. Are you coming to Atlanta?

    I don’t know, Marco.

We will have a great time.

Let me see if I can get a flight.

I will be waiting. I love you.

    I love you too, Marco.

Marco closes the phone. His eyes look in Anita’s direction. Cruz is all over Anita. Marco doesn’t like what’s going on. He walks over and asks to speak to Anita.

Anita, could you please stop making a scene. This is not the place. This is your son’s wedding, and I would appreciate if you could act like his mother.

Marco, Cruz and I are having fun. What’s wrong with you? I dare you to speak to me in this way.

Anita, I’m only going to say this one time. If you don’t get your act together, I will escort you from this place.

    Who are you, Marco?

Try me and see Anita. Tell your little boyfriend to clean up his act.

MJ is dancing with Joanna but watches his dad’s every move.

Marco walks away, pointing his finger back at Anita.

    I mean what I say.

Anita is upset, and Cruz knows that Marco has said something, but what?

Cruz asks Anita, Do I need to speak with Marco?

    Anita quickly says, Don’t interfere.

Judge Marco takes a seat at the table, observing Anita and Santiago from a distant. MJ is dancing but is watching his dad. Marco gets up again this time to dance with his daughter-in-law while MJ talks with his mother.

    Mother, what’s wrong?

It’s your father. He’s trying to control my life.

Mom, please don’t let dad get to you. He loves us and hates to see you with anyone else.

I know, but I’m going to put a stop to this nonsense.

Judge Marco is enjoying his dance with his daughter-in-law. He begins to ask Joanna all sorts of questions.

    Joanna, you love my son?

    Yes, Judge Marco.

Do you plan to enroll back in college?

    Yes, soon.

You don’t plan on having any children yet, do you?

    Judge Marco, I’m not pregnant.

Good, MJ is not ready to be a father.

MJ will be a good father.

I know that, Joanna, but a child is not what you need at this time.

    Judge Marco, is everything okay?

Is everything okay with you since you have my son?

Joanna looks up at Judge Marco.

    Did I say something wrong?

    No.

    Joanna stops dancing.

Excuse me, Judge Marco, thank you for the dance.

Joanna walks away. MJ turns and looks. He could see that Joanna is upset.

    What’s wrong, Joanna?

I don’t know what I said to your father.

    What do you mean?

I don’t think your father likes me.

Joanna, that can’t be true. Wait here. I will be right back.

MJ walks over to Marco. Marco is greeting a guest.

Dad, may I speak to you for a moment?

What is it, son? I’m busy right now.

    Dad, this is important.

    MJ, can’t it wait?

No, dad, it’s about my wife.

    What about your wife?

Did you say something to Joanna?

I did. I just ask Joanna a few questions.

Dad, I’m going to ask you to leave the reception.

You are asking me to leave?

I am asking you to leave peacefully.

Did I hear you correctly? You are asking your father to leave?

    Yes, Dad.

You are asking your father to leave, my only child?

Dad, please don’t make it difficult.

What’s wrong with you, MJ? I will cut you out of my will so fast, I’ll forget the day you were born. Is this what you want, son?

No, Dad, but you can’t say what you please to my wife.

What did I say that has your wife so upset?

    I don’t know.

Why don’t you ask Joanna before you make the biggest mistake of your life?

    I’m sorry, Dad.

I thought so. Get out of my face!

Judge Marco puts his drink down and turns to leave.

    Dad, shouts MJ, please stay.

MJ, who do you think you are, confronting me in front of guests. I should knock you out.

    Dad, I’m sorry I made a mistake.

MJ, I’m leaving. You know where to find me.

Marco walks out of the door. Anita sees Marco leaving, she rushes out after him.

    Marco, what happen?

Anita, ask your spoiled son. I’m going to the hotel.

Marco, please don’t leave this way. You know MJ worships the ground you walk on.

Anita, I’m leaving. MJ knows where I’m staying if he wants to talk.

    Marco, please stay.

Why should I stay where I’m not welcome?

Marco, that’s not true. Your son wants you here with him.

I’m tired. I’m going to the hotel.

Marco, what does it take for you to say you’re sorry?

Sorry about what, Anita? I only ask Joanna a few questions.

I know, but it’s how you asked Joanna the questions?

Anita, this is it, I’m leaving. You can stay here with your son, or go with me to the hotel.

    Marco…

Here is the address. I made the decision for you. Will I see you later?

    Marco…

Marco flags for a cab and waves to Anita. Anita is shocked. Her mind is racing as she enters back inside the reception hall.

    MJ walks over.

    Mom, is Dad upset?

Yes, Marco is pretty upset with you.

    I will call Dad later.

That’s right. Let your father cool down first. Marco loves you.

    Did he say that, Mom?

    Yes, he did.

The cab pulls in front of the hotel. Marco pays the driver and heads to his room. The attendant on duty calls Judge Marco.

    Good evening, Judge Albright.

    Good evening.

I have some messages for you.

    Thank you kindly.

Marco looks down at the messages. There is one from Anita.

Marco, I will stop by the hotel at 7 p.m. Please, talk with your son before he leaves. Marco folds the paper, puts it in his pocket, and hurries to his room to take a shower. Marco relaxes on the bed when the cell phone rings.

Hello, Marco, this is Anita. I’m downstairs. May I come up?

Marco replies, I need to get dressed.

Anita responds, I don’t think so.

Marco gets up and slips into his robe. There is a knock at the door. Marco looks into the mirror before answering. He yells, Wait a minute. There is a second knock. Marco opens the door, and there stands Ms. Sheena Jackson.

    Hi, Marco, I miss you.

Sheena, what are you doing here?

Marco, I got an early flight. I’m here to have a great time with you.

Sheena is talking to Marco when there is a knock at the door.

Marco pretends he didn’t hear it.

Sheena asks, Are you going to get the door?

Marco goes to the door, and there stands Ms. Anita Albright in a silk short sexy gown.

Sheena turns and looks at Marco.

    Marco, what’s going on?

Sheena, I have no idea. Anita, why are you dressed in that at my room?

    Marco, you invited me here.

I did, to talk business about our son.

Marco, but I saw how you were looking at me today.

Please, Anita, my wife-to-be is here. Do you think I will give Sheena up for you? You got to be crazy.

Sheena, you can think what you want about me, Anita yelled. Marco invited me here.

You are right, Anita. Not for what you got on your mind.

If Sheena wouldn’t have been here, what would you have done?

Anita, put your ass out. I ask you over to talk about our son.

    Sheena breaks in.

Marco, please don’t talk to Anita that way. Anita, maybe you misunderstood what Marco wanted.

Sheena, I’m no fool. Marco wanted me.

Anita, I think you said enough. Please leave.

Anita looks at Marco and says, You are a total jerk.

Marco reaches out and pulls Anita in the room.

The best thing you can do is keep your mouth close. You disrespect my woman, and now me. I will call in the morning, Anita.

That’s fine with me. Anita leaves.

Marco turns to Sheena. Sorry about that, baby. Anita gets carried away sometimes.

Marco, what’s going on? Did you invite Anita to your room?

I did. Not for what Anita is thinking.

Marco, how do I know this is the truth?

You don’t, but I told you the truth. Don’t go there with me, Sheena. What else do you want from me?

    I would like some respect.

Please, Sheena, how many times have you been in the arms of Nathan Tidwell? Oh by the way, did you forget? Don’t come in here accusing me of anything. If I want Anita, I could have her anytime. Get real.

    Marco, sometimes you—

Sheena, did you come to Atlanta to argue, or to see me?

I’m not arguing, Marco. I’m simply making a point.

Well I don’t want to hear this now. Sheena, I love you. What do you want to do?

    Marco, talk to me.

    Sheena, about what?

What you promised me when you get home.

Sheena, we are going to get married. Let’s practice making a baby.

    Marco, we can’t do this.

    You can’t, but I can.

Marco laughs and walks away. Sheena unpacks her bag while Marco gets ready for dinner. Marco’s cell phone rings. It’s MJ.

Hi Dad. May I come by to see you before I leave?

That’s fine, MJ. Are you feeling better?

Dad, I’m fine. May I bring my wife?

MJ, I have an idea. Meet Sheena and me at Star Lounge on Twenty-first Street. We can talk and enjoy some music.

I will see you in an hour.

That’s great. We’ll see you then.

Marco, who is that on the phone?

It’s MJ. I told him to meet us at Star Lounge.

That’s great. I can’t wait to meet your son.

Marco and Sheena leave for Star lounge. MJ and Joanna wait at the door. Marco introduces his son and new daughter-in-law to Sheena. He takes Joanna by the hand and apologizes. He welcomes her in the family. Marco tells Joanna that she will learn his ways and that he is not so bad after she gets to know him.

Sheena is in deep conversation with MJ. Marco is pleased with the outcome of the evening. They finish their conversation. MJ is glad he talked with his dad before leaving for his honeymoon.

Marco writes MJ and Joanna a nice check in the amount of three hundred thousand dollars as a wedding present. Marco is ready to move on and start his life with the Sheena Renee Jackson. And for Anita and Cruz, they are still hot and heavy dating.

    Sheena’s Trip to Virginia

Marco and Sheena return to Washington after four days in Atlanta. Sheena is excited and can’t wait to talk about their wedding plans before leaving for a week of court in Virginia for Bobbie who needs a vacation. Sheena packs and discusses the wedding plans, but Marco just wants this to end.

Marco, I need your help. Can you meet with the florist on Friday?

Sheena, I don’t know what types of flowers you want.

Marco, I need your help with this wedding. My time is limited.

    What can I do?

I will leave a picture of the flowers on your desk before I leave.

Can we have lunch before you leave?

Marco, I don’t have time today.

Sheena, please I want to see my baby before you leave. Can’t you do this for me?

Marco, I will see you in a week.

    Are you saying no?

Yes, Marco. I don’t have time.

Sheena, I need to see you before you leave.

Marco, why do you insist we meet for lunch?

Sheena, you will be gone all week. I need to see you before you leave.

Where do you want to meet, Marco?

Sheena, meet me in my office at 11:00 a.m.

I’ll see you then. I love you.

    I love you too, Sheena.

    Marco leaves.

Sheena puts the bags in the car and heads over to Marco’s office. Marco is waiting. Sheena knocks on the door. Judge Albright sits in an enormous black leather chair, looking sexier than ever.

    Hi, Sheena.

    Hello, Marco.

I have something nice for you.

What is it, Marco? Sheena smiles.

Marco gets up and locks the door.

Sheena, we are getting married soon, right?

    I hope so, Marco.

    I’ve been thinking, why can’t we…

Marco, what are you talking about?

Sheena, stop acting like a little girl. I’m a man, and I have needs.

    Marco, I’m a woman, and I don’t.

Marco gets up from the chair. He pulls Sheena in his arms. He kisses Sheena’s neck and hand. I want and need you now.

Sheena breathes hard, Marco, I can’t do this. You promise me that you would wait.

Sheena, I have waited. How much longer?

Marco, this is not going to happen. I got to go. Please try to understand.

Marco continues to kiss Sheena, Please, baby, I need you.

Marco, I’m sorry. I love you. Please stop now.

    Do you love me, Sheena?

Marco, I love you, but this is not going to happen until we get married.

    Marco stops. He is frustrated.

Sheena tries to console Marco. Nothing seems to work. Sheena picks up her keys and waves goodbye, but Marco doesn’t respond. Marco kicks the desk and sits back in the chair, thinking. Sheena leaves for Virginia thinking about Marco all the way.

Everyone catches pure hell from Judge Marco Albright in court the rest of the afternoon. When court is over, Marco drives over to the Hot Spot Jazz Club for dinner. Scotty could tell Marco had a long day.

Hi, Judge, would you like something to drink?

Hi, Scotty, a glass of white wine would be nice.

Can I get you anything else Judge?

    Yes. How about a woman?

    Excuse me, Judge Albright?

You heard right, Scotty. I said a woman. Sheena is driving me crazy.

Judge Albright, you don’t mean that.

Scotty, listen, this is between you and me. I’ve dated Sheena for almost two years, and nothing has ever happen between us.

Judge, this is something you need to discuss with Sheena.

Man, I’m tired. Sheena keeps telling me to wait until we get married.

Judge, looks like you need to get busy and marry Sheena.

Scotty, just one time. That’s all I want—one time with Sheena.

I hate to say this Judge. This is not going to happen with Ms. Jackson.

    How do you know?

Judge, there has been plenty of men asking about Sheena right here at the Hot Spot. Not one man is able to say he has been with Ms. Jackson. Not one! Judge, this is just my opinion. We have been friends for years, but Sheena is not going to make love to you until you marry her. If you pressure Sheena, she will walk away from you.

Thanks, Scotty, you are a good friend. I owe Sheena an apology. I’m going to ask Sheena to marry me when she gets back from Virginia.

    That’s right thing to do.

    Thanks for the advice, Scotty.

Sheena arrives at the hotel; she quickly checks in. There is a text message from Terrell Michaels. The text reads:

    "Hello Ms. Jackson.

I need your help, it’s been a year. Dr. Chavez and his wife have moved to Switzerland. I’m here in New York to oversee the church administration. I need some legal advice. When you get a free moment, please return my call."

Sheena closes the phone and heads to her room. She unpacks and orders room service. The cell phone rings. It’s Marco.

    Hello, this is Attorney Jackson.

Hi, baby, I want to make sure you arrived safe.

    I’m fine, Marco.

    Are you sure?

    Yes, Marco. I’m just tired.

Sheena, I want you to know something.

    What is it, Marco?

"I love you with all my heart. When you get back, let’s forget about all this wedding stuff and
