    DEDICATION

I want to dedicate this book to my Grandchildren:

Courtney Lee Fox, Brooke Elizabeth Fox, Ryan James Fox and Conner Lee Herpel and any others that come along until I get this published! I just wanted them to know a bit of where they came from. This is only the tip of the’ iceberg ‘but it is a start. You come from sturdy stock that is willing to bend when the Lord says, Bend. I will always pray that it will be the same for you as you yield yourself to Him.

    INTRODUCTION

G od’s Word says in Psalm 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. When I first read this verse, it hit me like a ton of bricks!! Once we are gone from this earth, that’s it. All of the ‘things’ that we have will be left behind for someone else to use. That’s when I thought about my grandchildren and how and what they would remember about me. This book is a series of recollections about my life with horses (I have had a total of over twenty horses over the years.) I made a comment to my future husband a few years before we were married that I loved the smell of horse manure. He laughed and laughed at the time. But as we look back over our 45 years of marriage, he has come to realize that I WAS DEAD SERIOUS.

The Lord has been good to me and I thank Him for the life He has given to me. Were it not for His mercy and grace, this story would have been much different.

A MEMOIR BY SALLIE J. HERPEL

A s long as I can remember I always wanted a horse. I grew up in suburban Allentown, PA in a modest house (tiny by today’s standards.) My Dad worked for Western Electric. My Mom was a stay at home mom, pretty normal for those days. I was one of two children… I have an older brother who was always my Hero. He had friends who, to me, seemed so wonderful at the time. (little sister stuff)

My Dad always said that I could get a horse when I was 12. But when that birthday came… there was no horse. Then the time was moved to age 16. Dad figured that I would want a car by that time. He was very wise because by that time I had met Marty Herpel and he would take over as the love of my life.

We met each other while on vacation in upstate New York. My Dad
