‘Dad named a bird Priscilla, and swore she was smitten with him’

Author LISA FUGARD fondly remembers birdwatching with her renowned playwright dad, Athol Fugard.

“My dad is now in his eighties and I’m in my fifties. Between us, we’ve racked up a lot of years. We also live continents apart — he’s in Stellenbosch and I’m in San Diego — so we don’t get to see each other as often as I’d like. When we do, my experience is always rich with memories woven in the present.

‘Birdwatching is something we’ve done over the years’

During my last visit, I sat with my father on his patio in Stellenbosch – both of us with a G & T in hand, silently watching the birds.

It’s something we’ve done over the years. I’ve sat on stoeps and under trees, at vleis and on riverbanks, at the beach and in the desert, and watched birds with my dad. We’ve done this across the world in London, upstate New York, the Karoo, Joburg, Port
