About this ebook

This is an imaginary story of a little gypsy girl living in southern Spain. It is a wonderful story to be read to children ages seven through eleven, but an enjoyable read for all ages. The story as told by Carmelita is centered on her family and clan. It is a loving adventure about her hearts desire to have her very own RED flamenco shoes. Events happen that push her dream further away as she helps those that she loves.

There are over eighty Spanish words in the text. Little lessons are learned; all in her clan must have worth. Carmelitas talent gives her a place of special worth!

The festivals in the story are still celebrated in Spain today. No feria (festival) is without gypsies and their music! You will enjoy the wonderful surprise of how Carmelita finds her hearts desire.

    INTRODUCTION

I’m so glad Charlotte Powers, the mother of Terri and Tracy, has finally taken time to remember me and recreate some of the tales she has spun about me. My name is Carmelita de Andalucia. I’m a gitana (gypsy) girl! I entered Charlotte’s imagination about thirty-five years ago when her children, Terri and Tracy, were little ones. They didn’t have television and videos then. Whenever they were traveling or waiting for their dad to complete tasks in Puerto de Santa Maria, Charlotte would keep them entertained with little tales about me. My being was everywhere in the little pueblo (village). The plazas (parks) with their fountains, stoned sidewalks and paths, benches, small orange trees, flowers, abuelos (grandparents), children and perros (dogs) were all drawing points for my creation. The markets, sandy beaches, umbrella pines and sea breeze aromas were also a part of me. I guess I’m a creation of my culture, the gitano (gypsy) culture according to Charlotte. Of course, she is no expert, but I’m glad I exist because of her.

Terri and Tracy have said they don’t remember the stories that were told to them. Also, Charlotte has no way of remembering every detail of my life since nothing has been written down until now. Guess what? She has decided to recreate me again and write down the magic spun about me thirty-five years ago. I have been locked in time, and I’m still only a little gitana (gypsy) girl!

    CHAPTER ONE-My Little World

I live in the region of Andalucia, the most beautiful part of Spain. This is the part of Spain that comes to your mind when you think of flamenco dancers, bull fighting, sandy beaches, and vineyards. Of course, there are lots of days with beautiful sunshine and evenings with heavenly sunsets. I think I live in heaven on earth. You know that we gitanas (gypsies) are one of God’s chosen. I just know I’m special!

My family is very poor, but we weave and sell cestas (baskets). My
