Dragon’s Daughter
A short story
Whenever the circus comes to town I get brilliantly, leaf shaking in the wind kind of exited. My mind reels, my hands quake, and I hope not so secretly that this time my father will return. My mother, on the other hand, withdraws deeply into herself. While despondent isn't exactly the right word, I don't have a more accurate one. She becomes nearly silent. Her eyes are both mournful and fearful.
I asked once, but didn't you love him, Mama?
She got that faraway look in her eye, the one that she gets whenever the fliers go up for the circus. "I can't say I knew him well enough to love him, darling. I knew him for one night and the following day. I traded everything, everything in for that night and day. I was betrothed. I had
