About this ebook
Abria Monique
A Boston native, Abria Monique Smith, embraced her love for the arts at an early age. She began writing poetry at age seven. Her love of creative writing led her to become a poet, lyricist and playwright. At the age of fourteen, she began her performance career as a singer and rapper, which eventually led to her earning a degree in Music Business/Management from Berklee College of Music. Her poetry has been featured on the albums of Musical Artists such as Walter Beasley and on the Berklee College of Music compilation cd, "We are All Connected", which raises money for the women of Darfur. She is also a professional actor, working in film and theater. The importance of the arts in her life is best described by her signature statement, "When I cease to create, I cease to exist."

Like a Poet
For every somebody who made me feel something.
Somebody Soup
Longing for something to nourish my soul.
Hungry for food that will make me feel whole.
Sick of the junk that just gets me by.
Somebody Soup is the new thing I’ll try.
I tasted life and it did me no good.
Spent too much time feeling misunderstood,
Not understanding what held me back.
Somebody Soup was the thing that I lacked.
Wasting my days being stuck, feeling lonely.
Hurt and dismayed by the ones who disowned me.
Dreaming, not living, pasts worth reminiscing.
Somebody Soup was the thing I was missing.
So I took my tears and with self-love I mixed them.
Threw in some problems and strength to help fix them.
Created a dish that’s bitter and hearty—
Somebody Soup, to make me somebody.

I’ve grown tired of playing this
tedious game.
Disguising my sorrow, concealing
my pain.
