I would like to thank my family, for supporting me in my book writing. What started out as a hobby was encouraged to become something more and I’m very thankful to them for allowing me to follow my dream and try and make a difference in the way people think by providing them with relatable stories full of hope, love and inspiring messages.

Secondly, I want to really thank my Gembud Emily Pillay. Thank you for reading the first, second and third drafts of Sweet Sin and for lending me many of your late nights to help me make the story more appealing and relatable. Thank you for helping me better my ideas and take my stories to lengths I never could have imagined.

Thirdly, I want to thank my friends who lent their personalities to POISON and I hope you guys enjoy this story that will always remind you of the moments we spent together in high school, some of the most stressful but happy years of our lives.

Finally I would like to thank all my extended friends and family who helped me on my journey and kept me motivated, the people who taught me life lessons and courage as well as those who furthered my passion in reading and writing and inspired me each and every day.

And not forgetting Partridge Publishing! I thank Al Mallorca for answering my email and being patient with me throughout the process and believing in me as well as April Ross and the rest of the team who have helped me. Your help is appreciated more than you will ever know.

    Dedication

I would like to dedicate this book to my mum, dad, younger sister and brother for, taking such good care of me and showering me with so much of love. They say that family comes above all else and it is because of you that I understand and appreciate the depth of that quote.

I also want to dedicate this book to my dear friend Emily Yolanda Pillay. She is definitely POISON’s number one fan and has really helped me believe in my writing skills even in the craziest of ideas. I hope POISON does you proud Emmabug.

    Introduction

The Serpent War would always be known for the heroes it birthed.

History books and legends had no record of the reason behind the war, the place at which it occurred or even the hundreds of brave men and women that fell.

All that would ever be remembered was the fact that war had been the birth of lethal heroes instead of the death of them.

For centuries creatures of the night have had nothing to fear, not even fear it-self. They roam the Earth with Immortality, Strength, Skills and Bloodlust. They have conquered creatures of the unknown as allies and victimised some as enemies.

The question Esmeralda asked herself the night POISON were born was simple:

Is there more than meets the eye? Can a group of lethally trained Adolescent Hunters instill fear once more? Can POISON destroy the evils they were created from?

    What do you think?

    One

It was the beginning of winter but the early fall of snow created a winter wonderland, providing beauty begging to be seen wherever you looked. Snowflakes fell and created abstract graffiti on the smooth glass of windows and crystal vines along door and window shafts.

The frost pieces made Storm shiver internally. She was sitting on her favourite armchair in front of the dorm window, staring outside.

    She sighed.

She was having one of her recently repetitive emotional combats. She could never win with love or logic. Thoughts she would never have fathomed now buzzed around in her mind, eating away at every conscious and sub-conscious moment she had.

What was she going to do? More importantly though, what was she doing?

She was meant to be a level headed, head strong leader; not some sulky adolescent. Furthermore, she was a supernatural Hunter with people relying on her, and that itself meant she should be spending her time worrying more about the people she was meant to protect and less about the danger to the lives of her friends or herself.

She began to trace the icicle paintings from the snow when she was interrupted by a light knock on the door. She was up and at the door in a flash. She lifted her hand to the handle on the door, when it was opened just as quickly, by Amyrie Pierce.

Her best friend smiled with so much warmth that it made her deep brown eyes look like melted chocolate. She flicked her ankle length blue-black hair away from her shoulders as Storm stepped aside to allow her entry into the room. Storm had shared this dorm room with Amyrie for the past 16 years and for that she was truly grateful. Amyrie was the one person who knew all of Storms true feelings, and right now the only person Storm was willing to forfeit her alone time to, was Amyrie.

What’s with the tight reflexes? Expecting someone other than me? Amyrie asked playfully as she took in Storm’s rigid stance and clouded eyes.

Storm laughed whole heartedly at her friend’s remark. She knew exactly who Amyrie was talking about- Chase Kane, the most eligible and sinfully gorgeous guy in Siberia and not to forget her 10 year crush.

No you know Chase; he’s a bit…unaware. She plopped down next to Amyrie on her bright blue bed then stared at the ceiling.

You really need to do something about that! That boy needs to be knocked back into reality and I know just the girl for the job. Amyrie stated confidently, looking pointedly at Storm.

But Storm just raised her eyebrows mockingly as she brought her attention back to Amyrie which resulted to the ever famous Amyrie Pierce glare: the only tool that ever got Storm to break her walls down, no matter the situation. This time though Storm just gave her an amused look and Amyrie resigned back to her initial question, Enough about Chase now, you still haven’t answered my question, what’s with the tight reflexes?

Storm got off the bed then, but tried anything to keep the atmosphere light hearted; she really didn’t want Amyrie to know about her ridiculous worries. She sneakily hit Amyrie with her furry pillow but when Amyrie glared at her again with pure death in her eyes Storm had no choice but to answer her.

I needed some time to myself after I realized that I’m afraid of graduating.

Amyrie looked at her puzzled, for as long as she could remember Storm had always looked forward to life outside the dorm walls where they actually protected people and not just learnt about the ways how to.

Storm noticed Amyrie’s confusion and responded defeated, well more afraid of what will happen to the bond we’ve created and lived with as POISON.

Storm was shocked at her own uncertainty, she had always had these bouts of wonder and worry ever since she was selected as the leader of POISON ten years ago, but this time there was a strong sense of helplessness she couldn’t overcome.

Amyrie looked at her with a painful expression, this was a thought she had spent countless sleepless nights pondering over as well. But she couldn’t tell Storm that, now she had to be there for her friend so she placed a hand on Storm’s shoulder and whispered in an assuring tone, We will stick together, the way POISON always has.

She leaned in and grabbed Storm into a big hug. She knew the level of concern Storm held for her friends, and knew more than anyone else the fragile person under the thick shell of bravado she kept on.

Through thick and thin. Storm murmured.

Through thick and thin, Amyrie repeated as they stood there.

Ever since they were younger Storm and Amyrie had made a pledge to remain best friends through ‘thick and thin’. That very promise had been Storm’s comfort bubble for many years, but at that very moment she couldn’t help but doubt it, as ridiculous as that seemed.

Come on we need to go! They will leave us without food for the next month if we’re late! Amyrie squealed as she ended the hug and threw Storms faded denim jacket to her.

Storm caught it with ease and had it on in the space of a millisecond. After which, she and Amyrie made their way to enjoy their day of socializing with their crazy group of friends from Guardian and O’Shea Colleges.

It was Saturday. The only day boarders were allowed out of the school grounds, meaning that everyone took this opportunity to go out and do as much as could be crammed into twenty four hours.

Amyrie and Storm made their way two blocks to the usual space. Mystery Ville Mall: the only supernatural friendly mall in Eurasia. They did a little window shopping then made their way over to Tang’s Lemonade counter where their friends sat waiting for them.

Finally you two decided to come! Kairi screamed.

Well, hello to you too. Amyrie answered her, raising her eyebrows at Kairi’s rudeness.

Kairi blushed but said nothing more as she watched Storm and Amyrie seat themselves down next to her.

Storm, back under the protection of her bravado, looked around then demanded, Latest report?

It was mandatory at every meeting for the groups from the two schools to share any new insight or information so that they were always one step ahead when faced with a problem. As the leader of POISON Storm made sure her duty was done a hundred percent, even if at times she seemed like a kill joy.

School sucks, Work sucks, no new vampires to kill and we never have any fun. Seth answered as his brown eyes warily watched everyone seated.

Zeya, Seth’s girlfriend, punched him in the stomach but his stance didn’t falter so she went back to her original position of leaning into his chest with his arm around her. It was strange for everyone to see Zeya and Seth as a long term couple considering he was total punk with his don’t care attitude and she was feminine and her nature of always wanting to adopt everything that breathed.

Thank you for the obvious Seth! a stern hiss escaped Sapphire’s lips.

Storm shot her older sister a look of gratitude which Sapphire returned with a smile. She then turned to Chase who was the O’Shea leader and raised her eyebrows, waiting for an answer.

Chase answered her smoothly, Like Seth said school sucks and works sucks but there are new vampires, and unfortunately they’re our worst nightmare. New breeds nicknamed Psychic Vampires because of their ability to extract energy from a humans chakra points after drinking their blood. Which means immortality, super speed, super strength and now virtually impossible to kill.

Virtually means there is hope. Storm questioned and Chase smiled.

Yes but very little, it’s debated that the only way to logically kill a psychic vampire is to intoxicate them with the blood of fey and attack them. That way the energy they’ve stolen from the chakra points is mixed with the fairy blood and reverses the effect so it weakens them enough to kill them.

    A small sarcastic
