Aries, Ares
Aries is most commonly remembered as the god of war. Dangerous, militarized and savage Aries was the son of Zeus and Hera. One of the 12 olympians he is usually shown as personifying all the brutal savage qualities of war. His sons Phobos (Fear) and Deimos (Terror) and his lover, or sister, Eris (Discord) accompanied him on his war chariot Famously known as the lover of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, who was married to Hephaestus, god of craftsmanship. They were exposed as lovers and said to receive the ridicule of the world.
Ares or aries represents sheer force and brutality. The spartans were said to have offered human life sacrifices to the blood lusting, violent god. Believed to have offered 1 out of every 100 prisoners for sacrifice to the powerful god.
In some parts of Asia minor Ares is sometimes a god or the oracle and founder and protector of cities. In Roman mythology Aries’ equal or counterpart is known as Mars. Given the important and respected role of being a guardian god in roman religion.
As part of Hellenization of Latin literature, the myths of Ares were reinterpreted by Roman writers under the gods roman name Mars. Later with western art and literature the two myths and their lives would become almost indistinguishable. Associated with force, brutality, war, military
