About this ebook

In 1961 when Air-India operated regular cargo services known as Flying Sherpa, poet K. S. Venkateswaran was inspired to create lyrical verse that reflected the changing times as passengers embarked on flights that allowed them to travel from one end of the world to the otherand back again. Some fifty years later, Venkateswaran shares a three-part collection of poems that symbolize an ever-changing world, the beauty of nature, and the complexities of life.
Venkateswarans first section of poetry highlights the incredible transitions that surrounded the beginning of passenger air travel in the early 1960s. From the wild animals that were first transported on Air Sherpa to Air-Indias first Boeing 707 services that introduced air travel from India to Tokyo, Venkateswaran lightheartedly reflects on a time that forever changed the world. In his second and third sections, Venkateswaran shares a lyrical glimpse into the past and an atmosphere changed by nationalism and patriotism while offering an inspirational perspective on love, nature, and Indian culture and traditions.
In this unique collection of verse, a poet lets his emotions guide his pen as he shares his lyrical reflections on life and the world around him.

    Introduction

An attempt has been made in this booklet of verses to publicize Air Vindhya and its activities directly or indirectly. The verses have been written in lighter vein and the topics dealt with in a humorous strain. They, therefore, may not possess a high literary tone or reveal a high order of artistic craftsmanship.

It is, nevertheless, hoped that this collection of verses on Air Vindhya will delight readers—be they staff, passenger friends, or agents of Air Vindhya.

These verses were composed in 1961 when Air Vindhya used to operate regular cargo services known as Flying Sherpa.

    We Can Help

This symbolizes the jet age and the conquest of speed and how soon the human needs can be met from one end of the world to another. Air Vindhya went jet in 1960.

    We Can Help

The wedding crowd all sudden grew

    Restless, cheerless—a motionless sea.

The bride and the groom—they never knew

What could the cause of commotion be?

Whispers float like the waves of seas:

    "The wedding hour is morrow morn;

    The jasmines delayed from overseas,

Who can get them morrow dawn!"

    Flowers enrich the wedding scene,

The situation must soon be saved,

Guess the panic, if there you’ve been,

    Different, you can’t have behaved!

Sprang our salesman in time on his feet:

"The answer is simple as simple can be!

Let’s jet these jasmines on our fleet,

And morrow morn they come to thee!"

    We Also Help

Prior to 1 January 1961, Air Vindhya’s passage regulations for staff on leave permitted the wife of an employee to avail of a free or concessional pass; this facility was denied to the husband of a female employee.

However, from 1 January 1961, the husband of a female employee is also allowed to enjoy this facility, and naturally, therefore, the price of maidens (employed in Air Vindhya) in the matrimonial market records a rise!

    We Also Help

The bachelors are in no mood now

In life to settle down and marry

They ask you: "How and tell me how

The family burden can we carry?"

Thus pass’d the weeks and months and years,

And many a damsel single stood,

Their laughters turn’d to sobbing tears:

    The problem can’t be understood!

In the dawn of nineteen sixty-one

The world of youth from lands afar

    Stormed the counters—one by one

Of Air Vindhya: it seemed a war!

The world in wonder stood and stared:

A knotty riddle it seems to be,

Smiled the turbaned prince: "We have dared

To jet our employees’ husbands free!"
