24-hour (late) news...
Janet Lang’s memories of Sixties Ireland (Choice, September) reminded me of going into a newsagent’s shop in Carndonagh, on the Inishowen peninsula of Donegal, to buy the morning paper. The shopkeeper told me that if I wanted today’s paper, I would have to come back tomorrow. (Newspapers, printed in Dublin, took 24 hours to reach Donegal.)
Did Janet try to make a telephone call? Public phone boxes had a small handle which was turned quickly, thus ringing a bell in the manual exchange. In country districts, the caller had to be careful what was said because the person at the exchange switchboard could listen
