    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    PREFACE

    My name is Marie and I’m 24 years old. I’ve always been a private type person, which my friends say is one of the interesting things they like about me. I guess it surrounds me with a certain amount of mystery. I worked in an office as a receptionist, in New York City. I like the Job I did, but I must admit it gets very hectic sometimes. A lot of people love big cities and don’t even mind the hassle. Myself, I’ve always been lured to small towns.

    Have you ever begun a trip, to someplace you have never been before, and don’t understand why, but you have a feeling this trip won’t be like any other? Well, I have just started a trip and I have that feeling.

    As I drive down the highway, everything I see is new. I am a little apprehensive; not knowing what is ahead for me. Will it be good things that I will want to remember fondly forever or could it turn out to be a nightmare that I will spend the rest of my life wishing I could forget?

    EXCERTS

    We all ran quickly to the bedroom and when we entered, the computer was on. It had BIG RED flashing letters on the monitor that read, REMEMBER THE SENIOR PARTY—I HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN.

    * * *

    She was shaking and was very nervous, and said she tried to open the bathroom door to leave and couldn’t get it to budge. And when she looked at the mirror, someone had written on it with lipstick, REVENGE—IS MINE!

    * * *

    Oh no, I prayed, please don’t let them get in. I dropped the hammer I had brought from the kitchen for protection, and ran to the front door. Whoever had been outside might be gone but for sure whoever was shaking the kitchen door to the living room was coming in for certain!

    * * *

    A cage full of Dobermans was just in front of us. This must be the dogs he had told us about. They were staring us right in the face; you could tell they wanted to get at us. It was easy to see they were trained killers. My guess, from the vicious way that they were behaving, they had killed before.

    There you go Marie, I thought to myself, looking on the dark side.

    I must say this is the worst storm I have ever driven alone in at night. I guess that is what is making me a little jittery. It was about nine O’clock in the evening and very dark from the storm. The rain was pouring down and I had my wipers on high speed. I still could barely keep my windshield clear enough to see the road ahead.

    I felt pretty safe because there wasn’t a lot of traffic out, which made it easier for driving. Not very many people go out on a night like this, but I have always been an adventurous type person.

    The lightning kept flashing; it would make anyone nervous. I just hope the storm clears up soon so that I will not have to drive in it all the way to Mayben, New York, my destination.

    A sign on the highway informed me that a diner was ahead, about 20 more miles down the road.
