Bill Flynn
At age eleven (1964), Bill Flynn began surfing. The Atlantic Ocean was only a hundred yards away from the Flynn family’s home in North Wildwood, New Jersey. As a child, teenager, and young adult, the beach and 2.8 miles long Boardwalk is where he worked and played. Surfing was, and still is, his favorite form of recreation. During the later 1960’s and throughout the 70’s, surfing the waves along the East Coast was a way of life for Bill Flynn. He worked hard and played hard. At the age of eighteen he hitch-hiked across the country and surfed for four weeks at Huntington Beach, California. The following year he toured the country on his 750cc BMW motorcycle. He made surfing stops at Huntington Beach, California and Melbourne Beach, Florida. In 1973 he fulfilled every surfer’s dream, he surfed the North Shore of Hawaii. For five weeks he communed with a group of surfers and rode the largest waves of his life (even till today).

INTRODUCTION
Finding My Author
IF I GET caught I will be ostracized by my associates and virtually every person of wealth in America. I must be crazy! These people do not want their secrets revealed or their private stories told to anyone outside the circle of wealth, prominence and class. Yet . . . I am going ahead with my escapade despite the risks. My name will not be revealed and everyone in this book will have a fictitious name. Only one person will be identified by his real name, and only this one person will know my name and position. This person is the author I seek.
Why do I tell on my own? Why do I expose the wealthy? My answer is quite simple . . . I am bored. I need excitement. I need to cause a stir within this elite society I live in. My wealth is tremendous yet I am feeling bored stiff. I will be the mystery man and I will control the game. I challenge you to discover who I am and which prominate family I head. I will supply clues, but only enough clues to make it interesting. Shall we begin?
I met Bill Flynn at a remote fishing resort in Maine. I happened to visit this resort by chance. Two bankers from Portland, Maine invited me to spend five days of fishing, relaxing and dinning with them within the best trout and landlocked salmon territory in the Northeastern United States. I have to thank Howard and Anthony. You see, it was at these camps the idea of putting a book together came to mind. It was at these camps that I met and chose my trusted author. And, it was there I supplied Bill with enough material to compile a text.
The forests surrounding the resort seemed endless to me. We enjoyed fifty thousand acres of privacy and natural lands. The ten ponds, three small rivers and one large lake are pristine and naturally stocked. Howard, Anthony and I caught and released dozens of the trophy fish. For most people this fishing adventure would be the trip of a lifetime. But for us, it was simply another fun fishing trip away from the cities and crowds. We can afford these trips easily. In fact, if I want to visit a particular resort on a regular basis then I simply buy it. I am wealthy. I enjoy controlling things and I don’t make any excuses for being as such.
We enjoyed our own cabin which rests upon a rock ledge near a large sparkling lake. The lake is bordered by fir, spruce, cedar, pine, birch, mountain ash and other varieties of mature trees. The camps (resort) have a main lodge where everyone congregates to share meals prepared by a chef. His meals are similar to what you will find at the finest restaurants in New Your City. Next to the dining area is a comfortable sitting room where we would sit and talk with other guests. There were usually no more than ten guests at the resort at any one time. Our cabin has two bedrooms, two baths and a nice living room. All the buildings are constructed of huge logs. The outsides are rough and intended to blend with the Maine environment. The insides are finished for comfort and to enhance a pleasing atmosphere. I noticed that all of the furniture is wooden and hand crafted by some talented person or persons.
I first spoke to Bill while he was busy splitting logs and stacking firewood. Sweat streamed down his face despite the early morning temperature of forty degrees. What interested me about this man was his sense of contentment. Despite having to do manual labor he seemed happy. How can anyone be happy when they have to work?
I thought. I asked Bill to take a break from his chores and to join me for a cup of coffee. He obliged me with a smile and we headed to the kitchen where the chef always has a fresh pot of coffee brewing. While we walked the hundred yards between the woodshed and the kitchen I informed Bill that I had heard about his writing abilities. Your boss showed me some of your short essays at breakfast. He spoke highly of you and he considers you an artist with pen and paper. I am in need of such an artist. I need someone to record the stories I relate on tape and to add some color to them. But, I have a few stipulations which must be strictly adhered to.
Bill nodded and listened. First, no one except ypurself can know my identity. This is imperative. Do you think you can handle something like this, Bill?
Bill answered me as we entered the kitchen. You will have to explain your project a bit more before I can agree to anything, sir. Writing is no problem. Keeping secrets are no problem. Actually, it all depends on what your subject matter involves and if it interests me.
We poured our coffee and Bill directed me into a large room behind the kitchen. This is the notorious staff room I had heard so much about. Here is where the guides and staff members eat and relax. Here is where the tall tales, fish stories and some of the best Maine folklore is told and heard. It is said that no other backwoods room in Maine has such a colorful history of laughter, personal accounts of hunting and fishing, tall tales of lumber cutting and jokes about the guides’ adventures. Here it is: the famous room where hearty meals and the gathering of friends have continued through several generations of men and women who love this outdoor life.
Bill, I am not sure if you will understand my reasoning for wanting my stories put into a book and then made available to everyone across the globe, but I will explain it the best way I know how. You can decide after hearing me and if you need some time, I will understand.
I am a person of great wealth. I was born into it, as were my parents and their parents and so forth. I have lived my life according to how my family expected me too. I cannot complain. It is an easy life. I can do anything I want and I can travel almost anywhere. I have feasted, partied, been entertained and people have waited on me since birth. I associate with world leaders and brilliant artists. Whatever my heart desires, I can have. I’ve kept my life clean and avoided the dark temptations that creeps into everyone’s lives. I am not bragging, Bill. This is my reality. Do you understand?
Yes, I get the picture. Go on, sir. I am following you so far.
I began to feel comfortable speaking to Bill. He was really listening to me and he seemed interested! This is rare. Most people I know hear but don’t listen and the rest of the people only pretend to hear. I have grown bored with my life. Within the past year my desires have changed and I realize I am growing near the end of my life. I need a challenge! I need something to stir my blood and charge-up my metabolism. I feel trapped by my current circumstances. I want to expose the world I have been faithful to all of my life because I am tired of covering for the people I believed were above everyone. I have realized finally . . . The wealthy are vain and their egos are too large. I can expose their secrets because I have been a lifetime member of this unhappy society of people. People outside of my class can believe or disbelieve my tales. It won’t matter to me. The important thing is that I tell the secrets before I die so my life can have some meaning to me. We won’t hurt anyone because we’ll not use their real names or locations. You won’t be hurt either, Bill, if you choose to write my book. We will say it is fiction and you won’t disclose your source no matter how loud the wealthy cry out. Some wealthy people will demand to know who betrayed them. Let them find the clues I will bury within my stories for them to recognize. Let them shiver and scream. It will only encourage me more. The outside world needs to see the crazy world I live in. I want to expose the secrets because we wealthy truly believe that we are better than everyone else. Frankly, I am tired of being associated with snobs who live such presumptuous and shallow lifestyles. It is time I speak but not time to reveal myself. They will all know later . . . when my will is read. So Bill, do an old man a favor and write my book. I need an author to release my weapons of words. Help expose us wealthy fools.
Bill finished his coffee then stood and looked at me. This could be interesting. I’ll think about it for a spell. It is good for me to digest what you’ve said. I’ll go back to splitting firewood and then, at lunch, I will give you my answer. It does sound interesting.
Bill then excused himself and went back to his chores.
Salmon King
The chef’s specialty for lunch was a combination of venison, caribou, quail and pheasant. A perfect meal to enhance the natural setting. Howard was being exceptionally talkative. His guide found an active pond this morning and Howard landed a trophy size trout. He was very excited since he always wanted a Maine trout of impressionable size and color to have mounted and hanging on his office wall. We listened as we ate. Without missing a detail Howard described his entire morning to Anthony and me. It made for a pleasant lunch . . . . To see and hear Howard joyful.
As we concluded our tasty lunch Bill entered the dining room to help clear the tables. He came over to our table and greeted the three of us. "How were your meals? I hope everything
