Sir Matthew of Denver

My name is Matthew I live in Colorado to me there is no other place I would ever call home . My life really changed about 141/2 years ago . I spent the most of my younger life taking everything and everyone for granted never knowing or really caring what became of me personally . Then one day I stumbled into the arms of a real life Angel . This Angel was sent to me by the Gods of the Universe for it was her love and true friendship that changed my life, and the way I see the world now. Over the years that I got to spend with my Angel I come to learn so much about myself, love, honor, and the meaning of true friendship . As you read my story you will see just how much I did come to learn over the years, and when things seem to be at their worst how things can go from bad to good, and sometimes things, and people come into our lives for a reason . It was at a time when I was ready to give in myself and end my own life when my Angel come to me from the Enchanted Forest ( Heaven ) and told me I had work to do . This is how this story of Friendship, Love, honor, and commitment came to be what I feel is the most power fullest love story written in our generation . Sir Matthew of Denver

    Dedication

I dedicate this novel to my best friend Joyce If it had not been for her, this novel would have never been written.

I lost Joyce in April of 2006. It was her death that led me to write this novel. Just when I was about to give up and end my own life she came to me from the World of Shadow, and told me I had work to do. The inspiration, the ingredients, the power, the love, and the direction for this novel all came from her and from the World of Shadow.

Joyce always told me that one day I would sit down and write like I have never written before. Joyce also told me that she would not be here when that day comes, but her belief in me and her unwavering love for me and my dreams of someday becoming a published writer would all come to pass.

It is because of her love and friendship that Joyce taught and shared with me over the years we knew and loved each other that made this novel the most powerful love story written in our generation.

To me, Joyce gave a whole new meaning to the word Ghost Writer. For she has written every word of this novel with me from the Enchanted Forest (Heaven). I always knew that Joyce was without a doubt my very own special angel sent to me by the Gods of the universe. Even after her death, and knowing that she is no longer in my physical world, I know that she is and always will be with me to watch over me and guide me on in my life just as she did when she was here with me in my world.

Joyce I want the world to know how much I have and still love you. Thank you, my queen, my friend, my love, my life.

    The Stranger

Matthew stumbles on to the ranch. He is not sure how he ends up there, but there he is—out in the middle of this field, holding on to a young yearling foal.

Ray and Jose ride up to Matthew and start asking why he is here and what he wants. Matthew tells them.

Guys, I don’t know how I got here or where I am at.

You are in the center field of the Flying J. J. Ranch in Castle Rock, Colorado.

I wake up, I see all these horses and cows, but nothing else.

Your nose is bleeding. What happened to you?

    Like I said, I don’t know

Well, come on up to the barn. We’ll have Lynn take a look at you and get you on your way home.

Ray holds out his hand to help Matthew up on the back of his horse named Wild Buck. The three men ride back to the barn.

    Lynn! Are you in here?

Yeah, Ray, in the office! What’s up?

    Found ourselves a strange one!

    A strange one!

Lynn comes out of the office looking puzzled.

Yeah, this is Matthew. Found him out in the center pasture. Says he don’t know how he got there. He seems OK, bit of a bloody nose.

OK, Ray, I’ll take care of this.

Ray and Jose leave the barn. Lynn and Matthew start talking. Lynn can see that Matthew is no threat to anyone.

How did you end up all the way out here?

The last thing I remember I was in Denver having coffee at the diner. Then I find myself in the middle of this field holding onto this young yearling foal.

That makes no sense to me! I had better call Steven.

    Steven?

    My husband!

At this time, young Chris comes into the barn. You can see that he is pretty weak.

Chris, you shouldn’t be down here, honey! You don’t look too well today.

I need to get some fresh air, Lynn. What’s up with this dude?

Chris, this is Matthew. Ray and Jose found him out in the center pasture, and he can’t remember or don’t know how he got there. I called for Steven to come to the barn. Maybe you should go back to the house and get some rest. You know how he worries about you.

I’m OK right now, Lynn! But thanks.

Well, least ways go into the office and sit down until Steven gets here with the Truck, then he can take you back to the house.

Hey, dude, do you like to ride horses?

Yes, but it’s been a longtime.

Well, we’ll go riding today if you want to. I’ll have Steven go with us. We’ll ride the trails.

Matthew needs to get back to Denver. He don’t even know how he got here in the first place!

    No way, man! Really?

Yeah! I found myself out in the field holding on to this young yearling foal. I don’t know how I got there or anything.

Well, we are going to ride anyway; then me and Steven can take you to Denver.

Chris, you might not be well enough for all that.

Lynn, I know you and Steven worry about me, but I’m not dead yet! I have cancer, Matthew, and, yes, I am dying; but while I’m able, I want to have some fun. And I want you to go riding with me today please.

OK, if you are sure it’s—

    It’s OK really!

Steven pulls up outside the barn. He knows a little about Matthew from what Lynn told him over the CB radio. Steven enters the barn and introduces himself to Matthew. It’s about lunchtime; Chris invites Matthew up to the house for lunch. Then they can try to figure out how he got to the ranch. They all leave the barn and go up to the house. They are all sitting in the kitchen at the table.

So you are saying that you just found yourself in the middle of my field, and you have no idea how you got there or why!

Yes! The last thing I remember I was having coffee at the Colorado Diner around seven thirty or eight last night. The next thing I know, I’m in this field holding onto this young foal.

Well, were you with anyone at the diner, or did you meet up with anyone?

No! I was alone all day and night.

    Well, where is your car?

At home I guess. I took the bus to go down town for a while. Went to my usual places. Decided to have some coffee, then catch the bus back home.

Maybe someone put something in your coffee!

Maybe! It does happen! Well, maybe you should call your wife and family to let them know you’re OK, at least.

I’m not married and don’t have any family here.

    Boy, this is too strange!

After lunch I’ll take you back to Denver.

Steven, I asked Matthew to go riding on the trails. Then we can take him to Denver.

I don’t know, Chris; you’re pretty sick, and I don’t want anything happening to you.

Steven, I’m OK really. I’ll rest some; then we will go for a ride, OK?

    OK, Chris, we’ll go riding.

Chris leaves the kitchen and goes upstairs to his bedroom to rest. Steven and Matthew walk outside. Matthew asks Steven about Chris. Steven tells Matthew that Chris got sick about a month after their parents died in a plane crash. This was their dad’s ranch. Their parents were John and Jenney. Their dad loved to fly. Their mom named the ranch the Flying J. J. Ranch thirty-four years ago.

This ranch and my brother Chris are all I have left to hold on to, and now my brother is going to die. It’s been a rough five years for me and Lynn, not to mention Chris’s three years with cancer, and now his time is coming. He won’t even make it to his thirtieth birthday that’s coming up.

Tears fall down Steven’s face as he turns away with his head lowered.

No, it’s not fair, Steven! I lost my best friend last spring. She and I were together over fourteen years.

Lynn and I do what we can to make Chris’s last days fun as best we can, but it’s taking its toll on us both.

Matthew reaches out to put his hand on Steven’s shoulder but then pulls back.

I don’t know why I’m telling you all of this. Hell, you don’t know us. Nor do we know you!

Steven, I learned after my friend passed on that sometimes it helps to talk to a stranger. Sometimes just an outside ear is a powerful help like today.

Steven wipes his eyes. He clears his throat and stands up tall and strong.

I got some feed to unload (as he heads back to his truck).

Mind if I give you a hand?

No, I’d like that thanks! What kind of work do you do, Matthew?

I have a small catering company in Denver. My friend and I opened it in the early 90s. It does OK; it’s slow right now, so I have taken some time off for a while. Maybe you’ll let me give Chris a birthday bash!

    But he—

Let’s not worry about that right now, OK?

Matthew puts his hand on Steven’s shoulder and squeezes it gently and tells him everything will be OK. Steven and Matthew drive down to the barn. Ray and Jose are cleaning out the stalls.

    You’re still here?

Yes! Still trying to put this puzzle together.

Hey, Ray, Chris wants to go riding today. Will you make sure to have three horses ready for us and make sure we have at least two walkies with fresh packs for the ride?

Yea, Steven, I’ll get things ready for you. How is Chris doing today?

He’s good today. Today is a good day for Chris. He’s getting some rest right now.

Your mom and dad sure would be proud of the way you and Lynn have taken care of Chris all these years, Steven!

Thanks, Ray, that means a lot to me and Lynn. Ray, you and Jose do an early feeding and go ahead and call it a day.

Hey, thanks, boss! Let’s go, Jose!

These two guys have really helped keep this place going after Mom and Dad died. And now with Chris too. I just don’t think I could keep this place going if it were not for them.

Yes, good help and good friends are both hard to come by, and when you find them, you treasure them. That’s what my Joyce always told me, and she was right about that too.

Steven and Matthew get the feed unloaded and stored away. About half hour goes by when Lynn calls on the CB.

Steven, guess who is up and ready to go?

OK, honey, we will be up there soon. Hey, Lynn!

    Yeah!

Thank you! Thank you for everything! I love you.

Lynn, tell Steven I want Matthew to ride my Buckskin.

    Did you hear that, Steven?

Yeah! Will do. This Buckskin was my dad’s horse. The best cow-pony in the area. Chris grew up working this horse. After Dad died, Chris told me it was his horse now.

    Steven calls out to Jose.

    Jose!

    Yeah, Steven!

Saddle up J. J. for me, OK?

    OK!

What kind of cancer does Chris have? If you don’t mind me asking!

Bone cancer, liver, lung, and something else.

    What about treatments?

The treatments stopped working about six months ago. Chris don’t want to do any more treatments. He wants to live out the rest of his life the best he can, and he wants to die at home.

    And that’s OK with you?

I love my brother very much, but I have seen the way he was with all the treatments. This makes him happy, so we are happy for him.

Steven and Matthew drive back up to the house. The horses are in the trailer behind the pickup truck. Steven pulls up in front of the house. Chris is waiting on the porch.

Well, take your time, will ya! Hey, Matt! Can I call you Matt?

Yes, Chris, it is OK for you to call me Matt. I am very picky about my name, but you may call me Matt. Maybe I had best use the cowboy’s room before we go!

Matthew pulls Lynn off to the side. Matthew tells her he knows about Chris’s birthday. Matthew tells Lynn to make a list of everything that Chris likes. Food, sports, movies, etc. Lynn nods and says OK. Matthew hands Lynn a business card. Outside, Chris and Steven are unloading the horses.

Chris, give this walkie to Lynn for me please!

    Sure! Here, sis. Ready, Matt?

    Let’s do it!

This was my dad’s horse, but now he’s mine.

The boys mount up and head out toward the trails.

Me and Steven grew up here on this ranch; we made this trail. Jose and I would ride back here every year and bag us a wild turkey for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I was too sick to go hunting last year. Jose and Ray went and got a turkey for all of us. I’ll probably be dead before I can go hunting this year.

Yo! Bro, calm down! We have a ways to go, and I don’t want you getting too worked up before we even get to the trail.

I’m OK, Steven. My brother doesn’t like to be called Steve, so we all have to say Steven. (The boys all laugh.)

So, Chris, I hear you have the big thirty coming up.

    Yea, in about two weeks.

Most guys I know have a big birthday bash on their thirtieth. What about you?

Well, I would like to do something if I’m still here, but the medical bills have us all gripped pretty damn tight.

Well, if it’s OK with you, I’d like to give you a birthday bash that would make the royal family of England blush.

What do you think about that, Steven?

Anything you want, little brother! Anything.

Guys, I don’t know how or why I am here, but I’m glad I am. I think I have just met a couple of great guys.

The boys have made it down the trail quite a way when Chris has to stop. Steven is worried.

Are you OK, Chris? Do I need to call Lynn for the truck?

No! Everything is fine, Steven. Need to stretch my legs some and show Matt the field where we would bag those turkeys every year. Let’s take a break here, guys. The turkeys would feed in this field; then they would roost in the trees at night. Me and Jose were riding this trail when we first saw them. They came back every year to this field.

I never was the kind for hunting, but I love to go fishing. Our dad would take me and Chris fishing almost every spring and summer. We would all get up early, do all the things we needed to get done. Then Mom would drag us all to church. After we get home, Dad would take us fishing while Mom cooked a big Sunday supper.

You’re getting to know all about us, but we don’t know anything about you.

Well, I told Steven about my friend Joyce. I lost Joyce last spring. She was my best friend. We lived together off and on for over fourteen years. She was a lovely woman with a heart of gold. She and I opened a small catering company in Denver; it does OK. Right now it’s a slow time for me and my business, so I took some time off for myself. Still can’t figure out about all of this though. Today, I mean, not knowing how or why I’m here. In time, I’m sure it will come to me. I live a simple life now. Run my business—provide the very best food and service in Colorado. Cater of the Year for six years in a row. Now that my Joyce is gone, I have slowed down some but still able to make ends meet.

    Are you rich?

No! Not even close. I still have rough spots to get through. It was just me and Joyce for all those years.

How come you and your friend never got married?

Well, we talked about it a few times, but things just seemed to work out better for us this way. Joyce was married once; her husband—a kind, gentle man—died of cancer. It wasn’t long after that Joyce and I met, we’ve been together ever since then. We’d get in a tiff over something stupid. I would move out for a while; before Long, I was staying at the house again still paying rent for my room at the same time. End up moving back in with my Joyce. What I always called her, you know was, my Joyce. She was truly the best thing that ever happened to me. What about you, Chris! Got some pretty young girl nipping at your heels?

No! There was someone that I liked, then Mom and Dad died, then I ended up getting sick. After that, I did not want to get close to anyone.

Chris moves over by Matthew and sits really close to him.

We really should start to head back home, guys. It’s a bit of a drive to Denver.

OK. Steven, I just want to show Matt one more place before we head back. I want to take him to the hangout. It’s just up the trail a way.

Matthew reaches out his hand to help Chris up. Chris looks up at Matthew and smiles at him, looking at him straight in the eyes.

This hangout was a place me and Steven would come hangout with our friends or whenever Mom was upset, and we needed to get out of her way. Dad helped us build it. I still love to come here.

The boys arrive at the hangout. Steven stays outside with the horses while Matthew and Chris go inside the hangout. The hangout has a few old chairs, table, some candles, an old canteen, a few field and stream magazines.

It’s been some time since I’ve had this much excitement in my life in just one day. Thank you, Matt, for coming on this ride. Coming here with me to my old hangout.

Chris gives Matthew a really big hug and a kiss.

I don’t think I’ll ever see this place again after today. Ya know?

Yea, Chris, I know! Take your time. If you need to be here awhile, I’m sure Steven won’t mind.

Chris grabs Matthew’s hand and just holds it for a minute. They just stand there holding hands.

    Better go now!

    Let’s do it!

The boys come back out of the hangout. After remounting their steeds, Chris looks back one last time. Tears fill his eyes.

    Let’s go home, bro!

On the ride back to the house, little was said. They are about to reach the gate to the field behind the house.

Steven, do you think it would be OK to take Matthew to Denver after supper? I need to rest some, but I want to go with you to take him back!

I guess it’s OK with me, but shouldn’t you ask Matthew too? He may be in a hurry to get home.

If it’s not a problem for anyone, it will be fine with me.

It’s settled then. After supper. I’ll tell sis when we get to the house. Better yet, let me have the walkie, Steven. Sis, can you hear me?

    Go ahead, Chris!

Matt will be staying for supper, OK. So make sure there is enough for all of us. We’ll be home soon.

    OK, Chris!

You look pretty tired and weak, bro! Still doing OK?

Yeah, but I’ll let you two tend to the horses. I’ll go up and get some rest.

The boys get back to the house. Chris gets off his horse and gets ready to go into the house.

Hey, Chris, have Lynn come out for a minute.

Chris waves back at Steven and yells see you at supper! Chris tells Lynn that Steven wants to see her outside quick. Lynn goes outside.

What’s up? Have a good ride?

    Yes, ma’am, we did!

    Chris sure looks tired, Steven!

Yeah, I know! Hey, we’re gonna ride the horses down to the barn. Will you pick us up in about thirty?

    Oh, sure.

Matthew and Steven ride toward the barn.

Chris hasn’t done this much in one day for a long time. I hope he didn’t overdo it! I wanted to talk to you for a minute, Matthew.

    Sure! What’s up?

It’s Chris. He don’t have a lot of friends, you see, and this birthday bash we really can’t afford something like that.

Steven, if it’s OK, I’d like to do this for your brother. All of you have really touched my heart so deeply today. It’s the very least I can do to say thank you for giving me a day to remember. I have had a world of loneliness since my Joyce passed, and today I felt like the sun shined on my face. And it’s because of you, Lynn, and Chris. I want you to invite the entire town of Castle Rock to be at Chris’s thirtieth birthday party. I’ll take care of everything. The only thing you and your family need to do is have a great time. Everyone of you deserves to have that. Well, I have one hell of a party to plan! What kind of music do you and Lynn like, Steven?

    We both like country-dance music.

Would it be OK to have the party here at the barn?

    I don’t see why not!

I’ll come out in a couple of days, get some plans and a menu started if that’s OK with you and your family.

    That sounds great! Really great.

The tears really start to fill Steven’s eyes now from happiness. After getting the horses tended to, Matthew looks around the huge, massive, oversized barn—making mental notes trying to see every inch of the barn.

Yes, sir, this will do fine! One hell of a party, one hell of a party. I’ll bring a small crew out with me. We’ll take measurements, do some planning. I promise we won’t get in your way.

Lynn comes driving up to the barn laying on the horn.

    Come on, guys!

    Is Chris OK, Lynn?

Yes, he’s fine! Tired, but fine. I have the stove on, got to get home.

Steven tells Lynn about the next couple of days, how Matthew will be coming back out in a few days to get everything ready for Chris’s party.

This is for Chris, but it’s for you and Steven too. All you have to do is have fun, OK. Nothing else, nothing! We can all talk more over supper tonight.

When Steven, Lynn, and Matthew get back to the house, Chris is getting sick.

    Oh, shit, Chris!

It’s OK, Steven, my stomach is just a bit upset. It will pass; just give me some time. I’ll be OK

Can I do anything for you, Chris?

No! But I think I’ll have something light for supper.

Are you going to have supper in your room?

Not tonight! Tonight I’ll sit at the table. There is something I want to tell you that’s important.

Supper will be ready in about an hour.

I can call for a ride home, Steven! So you can stay home and take care of your brother.

That won’t be necessary, Matt. I’ll be fine! Besides, I have some big news that you might find interesting.

    Me?

Yea! You, you’ll all find out at supper, OK.

Now if you will excuse me, I’m going to try and rest a bit more. It’s been a long day.

Well, guys, Chris talked me into making steaks for supper tonight. So, Matthew, how do you want yours cooked?

    Medium well, please!

Good, that’s how we all have ours too. About twenty minutes then!

Everyone gathers at the table for supper. Tonight there is no head of the table. Everyone is sitting across from one another. Steven gives the blessing; they all hold hands.

So what’s your big news, bro?

Since I’m short of breath tonight, I’ll say this quick if I can. I haven’t had too many good days lately, but today was a good day for me. A good day because I met Matt. I got to spend some time with my brother. I know my time in this world is growing short; we all know that. So in between trying to rest and throwing up, I have decided that when my time comes, I want Matt to have my three horses.

That’s really nice of you, Chris, but I have no place to keep horses or anything else.

You’ll keep them here. Everything will stay the same here. Except the ownership of my three horses. My dad’s horse J. J., my mare Nelly, and my colt. The one you was holding out in the field Matt.

(Chris stops to take a few deep breaths.)

Steven, you and Lynn have always done what I have asked of you. So please do this for me! OK? No fees, no food share, keep everything the same. Matt, you will always be welcomed here. I always sit at the head of our table. This was my dad’s place. After I’m gone, anytime you’re here for dinner and I hope it’s a lot, I want you to sit in my place at the table. Will you do this for me as my friend?

Matthew looks at Steven and Lynn. Steven nods with approval.

Yes! I would be honored to sit in the chair of my friend Chris.

They all shake hands to seal the deal.

    Let’s eat!

After supper, Steven, Chris, and Matthew head toward Denver. When they get to Denver, they take Matthew to his home. Steven stays in the truck. Steven shakes Matthew’s hand and bids him good night. Matthew and Chris go into the house. Chris thanks Matthew for a very special day and gives Matthew a hug.

I never want to let you go, Matt. You have made me so happy today. I’m so glad I got to meet you! (Chris kisses Matthew on the cheek.)

What the hell! (Chris kisses Matthew on the mouth.) I hope to see you again, Matt.

Chris, if you need anything at all, here are my numbers. My home and my business. I’ll see you in a couple of days. Remember, I’ve got a party to plan.

    I remember!

Chris and Steven remained quite on the drive home. Chris took that time to get some badly needed rest, clenching Matthew’s business card tightly in his hand. Meanwhile, Matthew puts on some coffee, Trying to make sense of everything that took place that day. Matthew is talking to his beloved friend Joyce and tries to understand what has happened.

Joyce, I need your help here, honey! You saw what happened today. Now help me see what happened. How this happened. It was almost like when we first met. I looked up and there you were. All smiles, those beautiful eyes of yours looking at me. They are nice people, Joyce! Just like you, honey. Always trying to help people. You sure was my angel if there ever was any. I know it will take a lot of work on my part, Joyce, but I want this young man to have the biggest thirtieth birthday he or anyone could ever have. Like the ones you would have for me. Damn, I miss you so much!

Steven and Chris pull up to the house.

Steven, thank you for making my day so special. (Chris leans over and gives his brother a big hug.) I love you, Steven! Don’t never forget that after I’m gone. OK?

I love you too, Chris, very much. (Steven hugs Chris. They are both crying.)

When Chris goes into the house, he gives Lynn a big hug and tells her thanks and that he loves her.

    Good night!

Steven is quite exhausted; he helps Lynn put away the clean dishes.

What do you think about all of this? It all seems very strange to me.

I have done nothing but think about this day. The whole drive home. Every time I tried to think of something negative about this day, my thoughts get turned to a strong positive.

    A positive!?

Yes! It’s plain to me that he is not trying to get our money or anything like that. I’ve not seen Chris that excited about anything since he started getting sick. No, Lynn, I have a good feeling about all of this. A real good feeling. It’s almost like Mom is telling me everything is going to be OK for all of us but mostly for Chris.

    I think it’s fate.

    Fate!?

Yes! I think Matthew is here to help Chris.

How, Steven? How can this stranger help your brother? Yes, he seems to be a nice man, but he is a complete stranger. I think I’ll have the sheriff check out this man.

Good! I think that’s a great idea! But my feelings tell me it’s going to be good news.

That’s fine! At least we will know more than we do now.

The next morning after breakfast, Lynn calls the sheriff’s office. The county sheriff said he would be happy to run this man’s name through the system. He’ll call back in a couple of days.Matthew is getting the plans together for Chris’s thirtieth birthday bash. Matthew calls his friend Brian. Brian does all the big party planning for Matthew’s catering company. Then he calls his catering decorator Philippe. Philippe is one of Colorado’s best party decorators in the business. Both guys know up front that this is strictly a pro bono event, and they both agree. Now the head chef and the wait staff is a different story. Nate will handle all of that for Matthew. Matthew will handle all the posters, cakes, and the party trays himself—especially the cake. Matthew makes calls to the local radio and TV news stations to get word out about the biggest birthday bash Colorado has ever seen. There will be a five-dollar cover charge. Kids get in free ages, eleven and under. All money raised will go to the family to help with the medical bills. Chris calls Matthew at his catering company. The phone rings.

The Teacup Catering Company! This is Matthew. Chris? How are you doing, my friend?

I’m doing OK today, Matt. Not as good as yesterday, but good just the same. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking today about yesterday.

Yes, me too! Still don’t know how I ended up all that way out there to your place though! I guess I’ll figure it out in time.

Matt, I wanted to thank you again for yesterday. I don’t think you realize just how special it was for me. Riding the trail again going to the hangout. You really helped ease my mind some when my time comes. (Chris starts coughing.)

Chris! You OK, bud? (Chris stops coughing and catches his breath.)

When will I see you again?

Tomorrow, me and a few of my crew guys are coming out to do some measuring and on-site planning.

I hope you will come up to the house to see me, Matt, after you get your crew lined out.

Yes, I can do that, Chris! You might want to let Steven and Lynn know I will be stopping by. Don’t like to go anywhere without notice. I have a lot of work yet to do today. Chris, I’ll see you tomorrow. Good-bye (hangs up phone).

Chris is really feeling weak today. His breathing is not good at all. Even Chris is getting scared now. He feels that he’s losing his fight. Chris is starting to have more and more headaches now. His thinking is not always clear. Chris calls downstairs for Lynn or Steven.

Guys, when you get time, could you help me please! (Steven comes upstairs.)

    What do you need Chris?

I just need someone to lie with me and hold me until I can fall asleep.

Sure, move over! (Steven lies beside his brother and is holding him. Chris starts crying.)

I’m getting scared, Steven! Real scared. I keep thinking about you and Lynn and my new friend Matt.

Yea, Matt seems to be a real nice guy. Giving you this party.

I think I love him, Steven! (There is no response from Steven.)

Did you here me, Steven? I said I—

Yes, I heard you, Chris! (Silence.)

I can’t stop thinking about him.

You have a fever, Chris! Do you want some aspirin?

Maybe later. I’m glad it was you who came up, Steven. There’s so many things I need to tell you. Is that OK?

Yea, it’s OK; you can tell me anything.

    You are so lucky!

    Me, lucky!?

Yes, you’re lucky! You have Lynn to share your life with, maybe have kids someday. I’ll never get to have that in my life. I tell you I think I love someone, and you say nothing. Just like now. (Chris starts coughing again.)

( Steven takes a deep breath) You can love anyone you want to.

Steven, I’m dying, and it’s important that you, of all people, know that I have found someone special. And that I, too, loved someone before I died.

Steven holds his brother tighter and kisses his forehead and tells him to get some rest now. Both Chris and Steven fall asleep. Lynn sees Steven holding Chris, and they are both sleeping. Lynn gently covers them up and turns out the light. Lynn goes to bed. During the night Steven gets up and goes to his own bed. The next morning, Chris comes downstairs. Lynn and Steven are in the kitchen sitting at the table having coffee.

Morning, Chris! Would you like some breakfast?

Not today, sis. I’m just gonna have some juice.

You need to try and eat something today. Even if it’s just a piece of toast.

OK I’ll try but later. I called Matt yesterday. He’s coming out today to measure or something. Anyway, I asked him to stop here at the house to see me. So he’ll be coming by, OK.

Sure, we’ll be watching for him.

Chris, are you sure you don’t want to think about some new treatment options?

No, I did all. I’m going to do with them. I just want to be happy for whatever time I have left—if it’s a day, week, or month. Just to be happy to be here with you, Steven, and hopefully to see Matt whenever I can.

Steven looks at Chris by raising his eyes so that Lynn does not see the look.

Matthew must have said or done something for you to keep talking about him all the time.

    What! Can’t I have a friend before I die?

Of course you can. I hope Matthew turns out to be a really good friend to you.

A friend to all of us, Lynn. All of us.

Steven kisses Lynn good-bye as he gets ready to head down to the barn.

Take care, Chris. If you need anything, just give me a call. Lynn, are you still going into town today?

Yes, around three or so! Need to get a few things today. Did you need anything?

    No, not really, just checking.

Steven leaves the house and arrives at the barn.

    Hey, boss, what’s up?

Well, several things! Did you guys get done with the feeding yet?

We still have the west lot to do yet.

When you’re done with that, come on back here; we’re going to do some work around the barn today.

    Morning, boss man!

Morning, Jose! I told Ray we’re gonna do some work around the barn today. So finish the feed on the west lot and come on back.

Steven goes into the office and starts moving around a pile of papers. Steven is still thinking about what happened the day before and the things that Chris told him last night.

(talking to himself) Damn it, what’s going on around here? Some stranger shows up out of nowhere, and my brother who’s dying tells me he’s in love with this man. What the hell is going on?

The office phone rings. It’s Lynn.

What? Oh, sorry, honey! What’s up?

The sheriff called me. You were right! Everything the sheriff could find out about Matthew is all positive. Sheriff said he and his friend who just recently died ran a soup kitchen for years until his friend became to sick; then they had two of their friends take over for them. The soup kitchen still runs to this very day. Everyone the sheriff talked to loves both of these people, Matthew and Joyce. Sheriff said we should be glad to know someone like Matthew. Why are you so cranky?

Just need a bit more sleep is all. Sorry! I’ll be OK. I love you, Lynn. I’m going to have Ray and Jose help me clean up around the barn today. If Chris feels up to it, bring him down to the barn before you go into town.

OK, honey, I’ll call you before I leave the house. Bye!

Ray and Jose return to the barn.

Hey, guys, grab yourself some coffee and pull up a seat. That fella from the other day.

What? You need us to find him and crack his head or something?

No! Not at all Ray. Turns out this guy is a pretty good ole boy. And he is giving my baby brother the biggest birthday party Colorado has ever seen.

    No shit, boss!

No shit, Jose! He really is. In fact, he’ll be out here sometime today along with a few other guys; we’re gonna have the party here in the barn. So we are gonna start cleaning this place up. Will need to move some things outside I’m pretty sure, but whatever they need done, we’re gonna do it. The whole town of Castle Rock has been invited to this party.

Well, boss, if it’s for Chris, you know we’ll do whatever we can to help you and that brother of yours.

One more thing, guys, I don’t really know how to say this, but Chris has been runnin’ a lot of fevers; his thinking is not always clear (takes a deep breath). Some of the things Chris has been saying is strange! Whatever he says, especially if it sounds strange, just smile, say OK, whatever. Please do not say or do anything that might upset him. Chris is getting worse every day. OK?

Don’t worry, Steven, everything is and will be cool.

Thank you, guys! Now let’s start by cleaning out the stuff from the far side here. We’ll move what we can to the old feed shed for now.

Matthew and his crew are driving up toward the barn. Steven calls Lynn at the house. The phone rings, and Lynn answers the phone.

    Hello!

Hi! Honey, any chance you and Chris can come on down to the barn?

    Yea, I guess we can!

If Chris says he don’t feel well, just tell him that Matthew is here at the barn.

    Is he really?

    Yea, they’re pulling up now.

I’ll tell him. See you soon, bye. Chris, we need to go down to the barn.

I can’t go right now, Lynn!

Steven told me to tell you Matthew is at the barn. He just got here. So come on.

Give me a minute (thumping loudly and cursing to himself).

Chris is weak, but he makes his way down the stairs. Lynn ask Chris.

    You OK, bro?

Just give me a minute OK, sis.

    Take your time, honey.

At the barn, Matthew and Steven greet each other. Matthew says hello to Ray and Jose. Matthew introduces his crew

This is my party planner Brian. He plans all of my big, big parties. He’s the best in Colorado. This is Philippe; he is Colorado’s best party decorator. And this man is my personal chef, handpicked by my best friend Joyce—Nate! Nate is one of the top 10 chefs in Colorado, he works for my company whenever I have something as special as this event. Nate will meet with your wife, Chris, and you to design and plan your menu. Oh yea, one more thing, Steven, if there is anything at all you or your wife want to try, you let Nate know. I will go to the ends of the earth to get whatever it is. Anything you want, and I mean anything! Just remember we only have about two weeks to get it here. This offer goes to you two as well, Ray, Jose. Just let Nate know.

This is all great, Matthew. Lynn and Chris should be on their way down now.

    How is Chris today, Steven?

I’m not sure. Last night he had a pretty high fever. Talking a bit crazy and all. This morning he seemed to be pretty weak.

I hope you don’t mind, Steven, but I brought Chris some drink supplements. It’s for when he can’t eat to much.

Well, thank you! Maybe he’ll at least ways try them. I do worry because he don’t eat much any more.

Is it OK for my guys to look around?

Oh, sure, if you guys need anything or have questions, just ask Jose or Ray!

I’m planning for about four thousand or so people to show up for this party. We have tents, drink carts. I don’t have a liquor license, so we cannot provide any alcoholic beverages. We have port-a-pots. While I was here the other day, I was looking at some possible parking.

This is all a bit overwhelming!

Just relax, Steven. All you and your family have to do is relax and enjoy everything. This is for you and your brother and your wife. And I haven’t met anyone that deserves this more than you three.

Lynn and Chris pull up in front of the barn. Chris gets out of the truck. He is shaking and is very weak. Chris and Lynn walk over to Steven and Matthew.

Well, we’re all here now. Good morning, Matthew!

Ma’am, good morning! How are you, Chris?

    I’m doing better now, Matt.

Chris walks over to Matthew and gives him a hug.

You’re shaking pretty hard! Are you OK?

I’m just real happy to see you again.

Chris puts his arm around Matthew’s back and waist.

Why don’t we all go into the office.

Matthew helps Chris into the office.

Well, Lynn, Chris I have some really great news. My crew is here doing an on-site planning and measuring. I have everything in motion. Let me get my crew in here quick. May I use your phone?

    Yes, of course.

Matthew calls Nate; he and the rest of the crew come to the office.

Lynn, Chris, this is Nate. Nate is my personal chef. Nate was handpicked by my best friend Joyce. Nate is one of the top 10 chefs in Colorado. He will be working with you three to design and plan your menu. Now the best part of it all is you can have anything you want. I mean anything! If you want fresh Maine lobster, you’ll have it. Whatever you want no matter how big or small. This is Brian. Brian is my big-party planner. He is the best planner in Colorado. This is my party decorator Philippe. Philippe is Colorado’s top, premiere party decorator. All three of these guys worked with me and my Joyce on two governor inaugurations balls. Got a four-star rating every year. And, my friends, you are going to have the best of the best.

Excuse me, Matthew, but what do you get out of doing all of this? What’s in it for you?

That’s a very good question, and I’m glad you asked it. I get something money can’t buy. I get to see three very special people that I just met have the time of their lives. Three people who truly deserve to have something this grand done for them with no strings attached.

Lynn comes over and gives Matthew a big hug. Tears are rolling down her face.

I love this man! Ain’t he great? (Chris leans his head on Matthew’s shoulder.)

Do you guys have everything you need?

Nate tells Matthew all but the menu.

I don’t want you to leave, Matt. I need you. Stay here with me tonight. I really need you to stay. We can talk about the menu over supper.

I’d like to stay Chris, but I can’t. I brought these guys out here in my car, and they all have other things to do yet today. Chris, you’re really starting to shake hard. Even more than before.

Did you eat anything today, bro?

No! not yet. I just can’t.

Damn it, Chris, you’ve got to eat something!

Would you like to try one of the drink supplements I brought for you?

Well, maybe. Will you stay with me tonight? I need you to stay, just as much as I need to eat something.

If you drink one of those drinks, and I mean all of it, Matthew will stay.

Matthew has a look of shock on his face.

Yes! But only if you drink all of it and at least half a can at supper and the rest at breakfast.

    Done!

Nate, drive my car back to the shop please. Leave me a menu planner. I’ll get it to you tomorrow.

Nate and the other boys load up and drive away after Chris finishes his drink.

I need to lie down on the couch. I don’t feel to good. Give me the trash can please.

Steven, you always wanted to try all kinds of lamb dishes. Remember you said one time you wanted to try a leg of lamb and those Greek sandwiches we saw that one time? The one with the round bread. Our mom would never fix lamb because she would always remember the children’s nursery rhyme Mary Had a Little Lamb.

Excuse me, I’m gonna be sick.

    You poor baby!

You guys work on the menu. I need to go out here with my guys. Ray, Jose!

Over here, boss! Just finishing up this corner.

Do you guys feel like having lunch on the boss today?

    Sure we do!

Take my card. Go up to the County Café and get whatever you want.

    Is everything OK, boss?

Yea, everything’s fine. Just need a bit of time to myself is all. You guys go a head and take off. Oh, bring me back a cold twelve-pack of MGD please. Just put it on the card. In the office Chris says to Lynn

Lynn, you like shrimp and crab legs. Most everyone we know eats beef, pork, and fish.

Might I suggest the surf and turf. A side of beef, a whole hog roast with all the works. Don’t worry, Lynn, my crew is the best at what they do, and you’ll be very pleased with how this all works out.

Steven is under a great deal of stress from everything that’s going on. Chris is asleep on the couch. Matthew sits on the floor leaning against the couch. He takes hold of Chris’s hand.

I can see Chris’s cancer. I can see it all. It’s in his liver, lungs, and bone. His bones are becoming very brittle, he needs a cane now. There is a new tumor in his brain.

Lynn stops making the new pot of coffee.

    What did you say!?

He has a new tumor in his brain. Has Chris been getting a lot of headaches?

Yes! Yes, he has. A lot of them. How do you know it’s a new tumor? How do you know any of this at all, Matthew?

Because it’s much hotter than the other cancer in his body. It’s pressing against a nerve. The swelling has the nerve pressed against the skull. To answer your second question, I have a gift, Lynn. I can see inside a man’s heart. I can see inside their body. I can even sometimes feel their pain. I told my Joyce that she had cancer; she didn’t want to hear that from me. So she spent thousands of dollars getting the test and official diagnosis from her doctors.

Would you like more coffee, Matthew?

Not now, thank you! I’d like to walk around some; is that OK?

    Sure it is!

I believe I saw a machete in the corner on the way into the barn. Is it OK if I use it?

    Yea, go a head!

Matthew kisses Chris’ s hand and gets up off the floor. Matthew walks over and gets the machete and walks outside the barn to a wooded area. Lynn fills her coffee cup and goes out to the barn to see Steven. Lynn asks.

    Need some help?

No, but I sure could use a hug right now.

Steven hugs his wife and starts to cry. Steven tells Lynn.

I don’t know how much more of this I can take, Lynn.

We’re in this together, Steven. All of us. We’ll be OK. Matthew went for a walk, and Chris is asleep.

Matthew finds the perfect branch to make his friend Chris a cane. After harvesting the branch, Matthew pays tribute to the tree for its gift. He sits under the tree and shucks the bark from the branch and carves the cane.

There, it’s beautiful—To My Friend Chris.

Matthew walks back to the barn. He meets up with Steven and Lynn. Lynn goes back into the office.

    Matthew! Got a minute?

    Sure, what’s up?

I need to know what you said or done to my brother!

I don’t know what you mean, Steven!

My brother is telling me that he loves you. That he’s in love with you.

Oh, I see! I can assure you, Steven, the only thing I ever offered Chris, you, and your wife is my friendship—nothing more. Maybe this is the real Chris. Maybe he does love me. You told me yourself, Steven, you have never seen your brother this happy for a very long time. Would you want to take away that happiness from him? Every day he is getting weaker. I can see it and feel it. Don’t let something like this take away the little bit of happiness your brother has left. He’s running out of time, my friend.

    Steven is silent.

You’re right, Matthew. If this makes Chris happy, it’s OK with me.

You need to think about you and your wife for a little while. Don’t let this take over your thoughts, Steven.

Matthew reaches out his hand to shake Steven’s hand. Steven takes Matthew’s hand. A warm and calming sensation goes into Steven’s hand, up through his arm. Steven can feel the sensation fill his heart.

    What the hell was that!?

Just a little gift is all. You needed it, Steven. I made this cane for Chris. Do you have any kind of light oil I can rub on this?

I think there’s some olive oil in the office.

    That will do great.

Back in the office, Chris and Lynn are hearing the radio advertisement of Chris’s upcoming birthday bash, how tickets can be purchased at any local Washington Mutual banks or King Soopers grocery stores. Steven and Matthew enter the office.

We just heard the ad on the radio about the party.

    Ad! What ad?

Yes, I have put an ad on all the area radio, TV, and newspapers I I told you it will make the royal family blush with envy. You all deserve it.

Here’s the oil you needed, Matthew.

Wow! Steven, you sure seem to be in a much better mood!

Yea! Had time to do some thinking. How are you feeling now, Chris?

A little better. Maybe I’ll try some more of that drink in a bit.

Matthew wipes the oil on the cane and gives it to Chris.

    You made this for me?

It will help you get around better. It’s the least I can do.

I love you, Matthew! I really do love you. Thank you. To My Friend Chris.

Lynn has a strange look on her face from Chris’s comments. Matthew sits on the couch next to Chris. Chris puts his hand on Matthew’s leg. Ray and Jose drive back up to the barn from their lunch break. Ray and Jose come into the barn and go to the office door.

Here’s your card and beer, boss. Thanks for lunch!

Put the beer in the refrigerator. You boys take it home tonight and enjoy it. I don’t need it now!

    Damn, thanks, boss!

Just make sure you’re here on time for work.

We heard the ad on the radio for the party. Man, that sounds cool. How you doin’, Chris? You look better today.

Thanks, Jose. I feel a little better today. Matthew made me this cool cane. Here, check it out.

    Now that’s cool!

Jose sees Chris’s hand on Matthew’s leg. In his mind, he can hear the words Steven said to them this morning and hands the cane back to Chris.

Well, better get at it again! Come on, Jose.

Guys, finish cleaning the barn. Getting this stuff moved. Tomorrow we’ll start pulling down the side chutes and the holding pens.

    Got it, boss!

I’m going to go help the guys.

I’m heading into town. Be back in a while. Chris, do you want me to take you to the house?

    Chris is coughing again.

No, I’d like to go with Matt for a walk, try out my new cane. Is that OK with you, Matt?

    Sure, Chris.

Chris and Matthew set out to go on a walk.

I’ll take this walkie with us.

Chris, tell me what you wanted to do with your life. Your goals, your career before you got sick.

It’s been a long time since anyone asked me that. I wanted to be a lot like my dad. My dad was a hardworking, honest man. He loved this ranch, his family. He was a good man. After I got out of high school, I wanted to be on the ranch so I helped Dad a lot; we loved to bring the cattle in every spring and fall. We would bring them in, separate them the ones we planned to market, breed, and slaughter. Then I was going to get ready to go to agricultural school. Me and Steven both grew up in 4-H; we always had show stock. I really enjoyed working the cattle and horses. Steven and Lynn had their own little farm about twelve miles up the road. Steven is a welder. He worked for the John Deere Tractor Factory until Mom and Dad got killed. Then they sold their place and moved back to the ranch to pick up where Dad left off.

Ever think of selling the ranch?

No! This ranch is what my dad wanted to leave to us boys and to his grandkids. This ranch meant everything to him and Mom. (Chris starts coughing.) Let’s stop for a minute.

Chris and Matthew sit on the ground. Chris puts his head in Matthew’s lap and looks up at the sky.

Just think, Matt, it won’t be long. I’ll be up there looking down on you.

Tears run down Matthew’s face. Chris can hear him crying. Chris takes Matthew’s hand and holds it against his chest.

How many kids did you want to have in your family?

I never really gave it any thought at all. I’ve never been close to anyone before. Not until now anyway.

Well, who’s the lucky girl? And how come I’ve not met her?

It’s not a girl, Matt. It’s you! I love you!

I see. (Chris kisses Matthew on the mouth. )

You make me feel whole. No one has ever made me feel this way before. No one ever will again either. We we’re supposed to meet, Matt. You and I. (Matthew holds Chris gently in his arms.)

Just hold me, Matt, just hold me. Did all of your dreams come true, Matt?

Yes, I’d have to say yes, they did. When I met my Joyce, I always told her if I ever I have a male friend that is as loving and caring as she is, I know I’d be the luckiest man in the world. And now, I have found that male friend. Actually, I got a bonus pack by meeting your brother Steven and his wife Lynn. Sometimes the stars and the heavens have their own set of rules that man still can’t understand. We should head back, Chris. You’re really starting to take chill.

Maybe you and me can have a talk with Steven later tonight.

Not tonight, Chris! Steven and Lynn need to have some time together, quality time. So tonight you and I will cook supper for them. If you need anything tonight, I will help you, OK?

    What about my bath?

    What about it?

Steven always helps me in and out of the tub, so I don’t fall. Then he washes my back for me.

I’m sure I can help with that if I need to, Chris. I gave my Joyce a bath every day till she passed.

I think Lynn planned to make chicken for supper tonight.

Sounds good to me. Can you eat chicken, Chris?

I always try to. Lynn’s a pretty good cook.

When does Steven come in for the night? And what time is supper?

Lynn likes to have supper ready between six and six thirty; usually at six, so she can have the kitchen cleaned up by seven. This gives her and Steven some time before Steven comes upstairs to help me with my bath around nine thirty or so. Then we go to bed.

Well, you need to get some rest. I’ll need your help with supper. Let’s get you back to the barn. You rest. I’ll see if I can give Steven a hand with something around the barn. How’s your cane working out for you?

It’s really great. It’s just the right size! (A big smile is on Chris’s face. They both laugh.)

Back at the barn, Steven and his two guys are still cleaning out stuff from the barn.

Hey, guys, I need to rest again. Steven, can Matt give you guys a hand out here?

Sure he can. I’d like to finish this by the end of the day.

Matt and I are going to cook supper tonight, bro! OK?

Come here, boy; you got another fever? You’re gonna get up and actually
