PENELOPE PLUM AND THE CASE OF THE LOST JEWELRY BOX
1
Penelope wheeled her golf cart down the driveway safely parking it underneath the carport next to her mother’s old green Buick. The green machine is what they called the family car. They had many an outing in old faithful as her Dad liked to call the green machine. It had been a reliable car to get around in, although Penelope always wished they had a shiny new sports car to drive around in. She was saving her allowance for one of those new sporty Volkswagen bugs that looked so hot. She would definitely look cool in one of those someday.

Penelope pulled the key out of the ignition switch, straightened her big round glasses that framed her dimpled face making it look all the more plump and round. She grabbed her flowered cap and put it on. She looked somewhat like a little English girl with a Sherlock Holmes hat on, only she had an adorable flower right in the center of her hat which covered her bangs quite nicely.
She climbed out of her golf cart with her school books and headed for the door to their stately looking two story brick house that sat at the end of the street, Crab Apple Lane. Crab apple trees were in every yard in the neighborhood. Penelope’s house had three alone in her front yard. The newly painted black shutters on the house made it look somewhat newer than it was. She loved running upstairs to her room every afternoon, grabbing a snack before doing her homework so she could play with her friends.
Doing homework before play was one rule she never broke. Penelope knew her mother would take her golf cart away from her like she did before when she missed doing her homework and turned in a late assignment. She was grounded for one whole week with no transportation.
Penelope loved riding around in her golf cart picking her friend Max up for school and taking him home each afternoon. Max was her very best friend. Max had just turned twelve two months ago and would graduate from sixth grade this year. Max was a dear friend, but somewhat awkward looking with his head looking a little too large for his skinny little body. His large blue eyes always looked amazed by Penelope and her adventures.
She had stayed after school this afternoon to check out her latest Nancy Drew sleuth book from the library. Penelope loved mysteries. She was somewhat of a detective herself. After all, she did have her detective kit she had gotten last Christmas she had begged for. It came with her very own magnifying glass, spectacle, and powder for detecting fingerprints. Penelope’s mother had given her the sleuth hat with the flower on it. It just added to her detective look she liked to have. Nancy Drew. Wow!
Would she ever like to be Nancy Drew?
Who wouldn’t?
Max said riding home beside her. She’s a hot babe!
Penelope stopped and dropped Max off at his house as usual before making her way home. Penelope knew she would have to hurry to get her homework done because it wouldn’t be long before Max would be knocking on her door to play. She ran upstairs and quickly did her assignments and just in time.
Max was downstairs, she heard the screen door open and his voice echo in the house filtering its way upstairs. She ran down the stairs excited to show Max the new mystery book she had checked out. Max looked at it and
