Poems & Prayers - Mario Miller
What Does This Poem Mean?
Poetry is written of time far gone and of times yet to be;
Surely you jest, for I have read and still don’t understand
the man, nor his plan.
Should I dwell amongst him and lend a true ear: to hear the embrace
that magnifies his name and game?
Or let him father me into his midst?
The way I see it is that to worship and pray is the way into his heart.
His hands are the keys to unlock the secret of this craft.

Iraq and Me
Away I am!
So far away
I wish to come home, yet I stay anyway.
Crack-Boom!
This is the music that I hear,
with screams of children in my ear.
They call to me as a lake to a pier.
I long for ice cream so smooth and cold
And a quiet spot to just hold on.
Endless is my mission here,
I really don’t know when I can go home.
Hot coffee on hot morns;
I sip and ponder as the war rages on.
How can the sun rise so beautifully?
then uncover the gore from the night before.
Have we won?
Is it over?
Is it soup yet?
I ask again and again, just to hear
Yes fine soldier our end is near
So there’s no need to fear.
Sadly I say to this you hear
Away I am, so far away
I wish to go home, yet I stay anyway.

We Are Safe
Who will walk with me tonight?
To my car and to my home?
Who will ride with me tonight on the long and
lonely ride home?
Who will comfort me when all that I knew
and loved has gone away?
My Father in Heaven is with me all the way!
He walks with me, rides with me
And is a comfort to me.
He will never leave me suddenly, for he is with me.
Always & Forever!

These Eyes Of Mine
These eyes have seen it all
Or at least I thought.
I’ve seen children scream
and people eating hog spleen
I’ve seen desert storms
and the start and completion of
Task Force Unicorn.
I’ve seen the break of dawn
and the dusty dusk rollin’ on.
I’ve seen the dangerously slim and unusually tall.
I’ve seen a kid’s love of a baby fawn.
I’ve seen Carolina blue skies
and Louisiana gray skies.
I’ve seen stars over Africa
and valleys in Grenada.
Oh how I’ve seen with these eyes of mine.
There are things that haven’t been seen.
like the full spread of Angel Wings
and Jesus costumes on Halloween.
like kids leaving dances and then buckling up
or people feeding more than breadcrumbs to ducks.
Or like a man who plans to rape
Then gets held up and gets there too late.
Like cops catching all the bad guys
So there’ll be less of sad eyes.
That flicker as they dream… .
Oh God, just once lend me eyes of Heaven
So I can see
like the faithful souls
that are unto Thee
Yes, what these eyes have seen and yet not.
I Look On
From my pain-filled room
to the old gray window pane of the next room,
I look on
Dear Daddy, where are you now?
And when will I see you again?
When are you coming home to stay?
I miss you so.
I miss our walks in the parks
And all of our silly little talks.
So for now, I’ll sit here
On this old chair and stare out at the clouds
You used to name for me.
I wish you had never gone in to be a soldier
And you had a regular life of endless Saturdays
With kites in flight.
But for now I’ll just look on,
Unto the clean sheets that blow so gently in the springtime breeze
And watch the Dogwood blossoms lose their petals beneath my knees.
Dear Daddy, these things mean nothing to me
As I look on under our favorite tree
Just come home safe daddy; please!
Sweet Carolina Dreams
Pickle dill rings on a warm afternoon
There on the porch where father gathered to
Rinse the faults and doubts of one another.
Now fade in the afternoon sun
Mother may I have another
?
Oh please may I
?
Hands clapping and toes tapping
Carry on as grandfather raises up the youth
With new wisdom and sings old hymns of the day;
Ones not forgotten.
Sun sparkling lemonade is poured to fill every glass.
Now once and for all to rid hurts of the past
Rejoice in the great present
And marvelous Future.
Oh Father God, what a great day
You have made for us as you sprinkle
Sun ripen melodies of Heaven upon our heads.
You are such a good God.
You are truly worthy of praise.
You love us all the same and care so very much.
How can one deny your mercy and grace?
You dried all tears and fears
That mocks our rejoicing days of
Pickle dill rings and sweet lemonade rays.
Sweet, sweet Spirit that fills our place
Nothing could be finer
