Dark Dreams - Patsy McClendon McDonald

    CHAPTER ONE

    JUST WHEN I THOUGHT THE

    DREAM WAS OVER

Every since I was diagnosed with breast cancer my life has been different. I tell you my life has not been the same! I am in constant pain that won’t seem to go away, and that’s why I know this must still be a dream.

After completing chemo and radiation, I thought all the pain will be over, but no way, no how. I still have pain in my legs, arms, and back. So you tell me what the heck is going on?

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2008. I completed chemo treatment weeks before, and before I knew it, it was time radiation was begun. I finished with radiation on September 18, 2008. My God, I thought that it was all going to be over, and I could get on with life as usually. The day after my last radiation treatment, I woke up happy as if I had won a lottery. I said to myself, OK, in just a minute I will be feeling just like new. But that never happened. Now I’m asking, What the heck is going on? and What is happening to me?

The doctor’s appointments are continuing, but, have you to know, I’m glad about that part because I would like for any health problems to be detected early, and with the help of modern technology it can be done. So my advice to anyone is to always keep all your doctor’s appointments. Early detection could save your life. I really didn’t know the importance of keeping doctor’s appointments until this awful thing happened to me. So people, be aware of what can happen and use every preventive measure possible. These are some extra steps that can save your life.

The doctor started me on a chemo pill during the same time that I was ending the radiation treatments. This chemo pill, I will be taking for five years. But, I am here to tell you, that when the five years are up I will be afraid to stop taking it. She is going to have to pull that pill from me like you would grip a nail to pull out of a piece of wood. I promise you, I don’t look forward to that day. I know that the chemo pill is a form of protection from cancer, so I’m not going to want to let that go I will be afraid without it.

Well, you can say, How is that possible that she doesn’t want to stop taking the chemo pill? I like having it for protection that’s why. Besides the chemo pill, I am taking other mediation as well. But that’s OK, the important thing is that I am still alive, by the grace of God, I am still alive. As I would say, As long as I am breathing, I still have a fighting chance. I still have a fighting chance and believe me, I am going to take it.

To me there is no such thing as giving up, when I do think about such a thing, I think about my son and what he would do without me. This gives me the strength to carry on. I look up to Jesus every day and ask for the strength that I need. But no one said it will be easy.

You must be spiritually as well as physically strong and stay with the Lord. I saying, Stay prayed up and be spiritually full in the Lord. Wow this is deep. As I lie here in my bed, I am thinking, Why did this happen to me?" There is no end to this nightmare.

If this is a dream, will someone please come and shake me? I stepped from my bed to the floor, still I feel like I am still in a dream. Stop! This dream, please hit me on the head! Stomp my feet! Slap my face!

When I went for my appointment with my oncologist, I was telling her about how much pain I am in. I wanted her to tell me something good. At least say, All the pain will be over soon. But I had no such luck. She was nice enough to write some prescriptions for pain. I am really grateful and thankful for everything that my doctors have done for me; the Lord is wonderful. He has a blessing for each and every one of us, but, we must be ready and willing to receive it. We must do what we have to do. I have trust in my doctors because I know that the Lord is guiding them to do what they need to do. But hey, I am a big girl and I can take it. We are so truly blessed to have doctors with such great knowledge. There was a time in technology was not where it is today and lots of people lost their lives to cancer and other diseases. But today with new technology, a lot of lives have been saved. Our doctors today are very special people. Our doctors today also have more caring staff on hand to help with different situations. I have trust in my doctor, and I believe that by the help of the Lord, it will work out all right.

The Lord is really great; he gave our doctors the knowledge to help us in a special way. What would we do without them?

The Lord gives the doctors and nurses the power and the know-how to help us in a special way that only they can. We must continue to have the faith. Sometimes things don’t always happen when we want them to, but it will happen right on time. The Lord does not always come when we want him to, but he is always right on time, and this is a true statement.

I really don’t think that anyone who has gone through the treatments and whose body has taken the punishment will never be over the harshness. How can the body take so much? I will tell you, with the help of the Lord. That is the only way anybody can live through such a thing.

Some things we just can’t get over, and some things we can. We just have to pray about it. This is all that we can do.

The Lord gave the doctors the knowledge and they know how to do the things that they need to do in order to help people. Talk about miracles. Yes, miracles happen every day, but remember, someone is behind those miracles, and we know who—the Lord.

The Lord has a special need for each of us, and that is why we are here on this earth. Through him, we may help others. He touches us through others. It is a miracle each day that we are able to wake up. It is a special miracle when we are able to get up and do things for ourselves because there are some people that cannot
