    PREFACE

A backgrounder is the first part of each page throughout this workbook to orient the reader with regard to setting, mindset or thought process.

Instructors are thus free to use any number of these scenarios in class or as homework assignments, with optional reviews in class, or individual grading on reaction aspects. Most often class time is the delimiting factor on how much of this workbook can be used within the scope of a course.

The scenario, query point or challenge question which follows each backgrounder is meant to have the course participant thinking independently, whether individually addressing the matter, or in small groups for later reporting back to the larger class. Participants should be instructed to continue to take notes from the suggestions and thoughts of their group mates or classmates.

The course Instructor/Professor may elect to use the very same scenarios for examination purposes, where recall of several thoughts (from the many brainstormed from the class) represent testable points.

Feedback to the author with respect to most popular or favorite pages in use is of course very much appreciated.

    ABORTION AS A CONTINUING ISSUE

    Background:

Perhaps the most heated debate in the area of human sexuality takes its form in the issue of the legitimacy of terminations of pregnancy. Various nations in the world will either freely allow it or forbid it. In the US the landmark decision of Roe v. Wade established guidelines which were introduced to provide a limited right to choose for the woman, as she holds the decision as to whether to carry the embryo/fetus to term (parturition or childbirth), or about the pregnancy, based on a variety of factors. These include: knowledge (or not) of the putative father, economic reasons (even when married or not), emotional reasons ( even when married or not), emotional reasons (rape, incest) and medical reasons, including hereditary anomalies such as Down’s Syndrome, hydrocephaly, or other dysfunctional development.

One major objective of human sexuality education is to make it clear that use of contraception, not abortion is the preferred pregnancy prevention measure. Also, abortion is the other form of birth control that is meant to be a last resort measure (if at all) against bringing unwanted or seriously deformed/dysfunctional children into the world. Women who have had an historical string of abortions clearly need counseling with regard to the use of contraception, not to mention the seriousness of any abortion procedure as a surgically invasive procedure, regardless of method or number of weeks pregnant.

Opinion surveys which poll populations on agreement or disagreement, i.e. favor or oppose abortion are arguably more accurate when presented as a two-part question:

    1) Do you favor laws which support pro-life or pro-choice?!

    2) Aside from your view on the law, how would you decide for yourself personally as a potential mother or putative father?

Based on numerous classroom surveys over several years by the author, the vast majority (approximately 80%) favor Pro-Choice law, yet personally would choose Pro-Life for themselves, thus leaving the ultimate choice even under the present law with the individual. It is notable that virtually all polled (in class by this author) would allow rape, incest, and medical exigency cases to go to early termination, in priority of mother’s life and social factors.

    Questions:

    1) What is your position on abortion, i.e. Pro-life or Pro-Choice" for your own personhood?

    2) Is this the same or different for your view on how the law should be?

    3) Do you agree with the trimester approach taken by Roe v. Wade which favors maternal rights of choice within first and second trimesters, and fetal rights to life within the third trimester?
