Susan E. Harris

Susan E. Harris is an international clinician, riding teacher, equestrian author, and artist from Cortland, New York. She has taught all seats and styles of riding, and has trained, shown, and prepared horses and riders for competition in many equestrian disciplines, including hunters, jumpers, dressage, equitation, eventing, western pleasure and performance, saddle seat, and the pleasure and versatility breeds. Susan directed 5-H Acres School of Horsemanship, a nationally accredited riding instructor school, for 10 years, taught college equine studies and physical education equitation courses, and has been active in training and establishing certification standards for American riding instructors since the 1970s. In 2004 she was honored as a Master Instructor by the American Riding Instructor Association. A Senior Centered Riding Instructor and Clinician, Susan apprenticed with Sally Swift, the founder of Centered Riding®. She teaches clinics in Centered Riding and in Horse Gaits, Balance, and Movement for instructors, trainers, judges, and riders of all levels and riding interests. Susan's demonstrations, "Anatomy in Motion™: The Visible Horse", in which she paints the bones and muscles on a live horse, and "Anatomy in Motion: The Visible Rider™" have been popular attractions at equine expos and clinics across North America and around the world, including EquineAffaire, Equitana Australia, the American Quarter Horse Congress, the George Morris Horsemastership Clinic at Wellington, FL, and others. Susan Harris is the author and illustrator of popular horse books, including Horsemanship in Pictures, Horse Gaits, Balance, and Movement, Grooming to Win, the three U.S. Pony Club Manuals of Horsemanship, and the USPC Guides to Longeing, Bandaging, and Conformation. She writes a regular column in EQUUS Magazine, Commonsense Horsemanship with Susan Harris. With Peggy Brown, she produced two DVDs: Anatomy in Motion™ I: The Visible Horse, and Anatomy in Motion II: The Visible Rider™. Susan designed the art for the Breyer Anatomy in Motion model horse, and has illustrated many popular horse books. Susan's study of equine and human anatomy and movement as an artist as well as an instructor, rider and trainer, has given her a unique perspective on how horses and riders balance and move together. Centered Riding techniques can help riders discover how to use their bodies better for improved balance and harmony between horse and rider. Susan's knowledge of horse gaits and movement and wide experience in various breeds and disciplines enable her to help all kinds of riders and horses improve their balance, comfort, movement and performance. To my family who had to give up the computer, eat less home cooked meals and do their own laundry and dishes, Thanks! I knew you could do all those things all along. To my dearest kindred spirit, who believed in me even when I doubted myself, you deserve the best life has to offer, I’ll love you, always. To all those beautiful people who have touched my life, thank you for everything, this book is about you. To the Great I AM who created us all, to Jesus Christ who died to save us and to the Holy Spirit, who puts these poems in my heart, thank you for your love and mercy, grace and divine protection. PREFACE

Several of my poems have already been published in various books of poetry available through the Library of Congress, the most noted being found in the books, The Colors of Life & The Flame of Hope. Previously published poems include; My Three Wishes, Alpha and Omega, Choices, Living, Children, to name a few. Many of the works in this book have been revised to protect the identity of those written about, so that if you are a friend or relative who holds the original version, then you will have a one of a kind keepsake. Some poems are too personal to be read by anyone, but the original recipient, and so, you will not see them in print here or anywhere, but your private library. A special thanks to everyone who does me the honor of reading my work, I appreciate your time and hope you enjoy the book.

GENESIS

In the beginning

In the beginning, what better place to start? Just as the earth had its’ start, so each of us has a beginning. If you are willing, join me, now, as we attempt to journey back into the early, formative days of our psyche.

Think back to your earliest memories. How far back can you travel in time, within the confines of your own brain? Can you picture in your mind’s eye, the people, the colors, the smells, the sounds? When you remember Christmas at Grandma’s, can you see the tree; smell the faint hint of pine amongst the wafting scents of pumpkin pie and gingerbread men; taste Aunt Mary’s pecan pie; hear Grandpa saying grace; feel the warmth from the Yule log in the fireplace? Some of us are able to do this quite easily, while, others might find it nearly impossible.

Remember how you felt at certain historic moments in your life? We all remember the first day of kindergarten, our first kiss, the long awaited day of high school graduation. Can you conjure up the feelings of apprehension, exhilaration, and simple pride of accomplishment those experiences provided? On the opposite spectrum, we had to learn to confront feelings of sadness when a beloved pet and, ultimately, someone close to us, died. What inner voice led you to decide what career path you wanted to follow? How did you happen upon the location where you live? Why do you live with the person, and or, persons that reside with you there?

Lots of questions that you might not have considered, if it were not for the fact that this, seemingly nosy, writer had the curiosity to ask. To find the answers to these questions you must look back upon your life and examine the impact that others have had upon determining the person you are right
