    CHAPTER 1

     GOD IS AWESOME!

How many of us wake up in the morning and the first thing we think is, God is Awesome!? For most of us, getting up in the morning is a chore. We hear the alarm, hit the snooze button, and roll over thinking, just five more minutes. The truth is that our society is over-worked and promotes multitasking at every level, trying to squeeze into 24 hours as much activity as possible. Therefore, we tend not to get enough rest, and once we do get up, as soon as our feet hit the floor, we are off and running. Throwing on the first thing we can find and making a mad dash for the door, we don’t stop to take a breath, much less, consider God. However, God has a better life in mind for us. It is a life of peace, rejoicing, joy and pleasure. It does not necessarily mean that the rat race slows down, but it does mean that we are runners in a different kind of race. A race with heavenly rewards, instead of the endless exercise wheel in the hamster cage: getting us nowhere.

Remember that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize. You also must run in such a way that you will win. All athletes practice strict self-control. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I am not like a boxer who misses his punches. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that afterpreaching to others I myselfmight be disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NLT)

Now wait a minute! How did we get from waking up with peace, rejoicing, joy and pleasure to running a race? What could running a race possibly have to do with peace and pleasure?

Running this race is how we have a life of peace, rejoicing, joy and pleasure. Before we know God, we are running on that proverbial hamster wheel in the cage, exhausted and stagnant being satisfied with a pellet of food and a few drops of water. Once God opens our eyes, we can see the cage for what it really is, and we have a choice. We can accept the circumstances, in which we live and blindly stumble on, or we can accept the pierced hand of Jesus and cry out for Him to take us away; believing that the life He has for us is far better than the life we currently endure. When we cry out for Him, accepting and believing in Him within our hearts, He lifts us out of that cage and places us on the path of life, where He gently guides us as we travel on the narrow road towards heaven. It all sounds quite poetic and sweet doesn’t it? The truth is that living your life for God is more than just saying, I believe in God. It is living in such a way that God’s glory shines through everything you do. It is not always pretty and it is never the easy path. It requires the kind of training portrayed in the scripture we read earlier. Before we dedicate our lives to God, our mind, heart, feelings and understanding are in control of what we do, where we go, and how we do things. However, God intended for our spiritual nature to rule, guided by the Holy Spirit.

With the Lord’s authority let me say this: Live no longer as the ungodly do, for they are hopelessly confused. Their closed minds are full of darkness; they are far away from the life of God because they have shut their minds and hardened their hearts against Him. They don’t care anymore about right and wrong, and they have given themselves over to immoral ways. Their lives are filled with all kinds of impurity and greed. But that isn’t what you were taught when you learned about Christ. Since you have heard all about Him and have learned the truth that is in Jesus, throw off your old evil nature and your former way of life, which is rotten through and through, full of lust and deception. Instead, there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes.

    Ephesians 4:17-23 (NLT)

How do we train for the race? This renewing of our minds simply means retraining it, shifting the focus of our mind. The first thing we need to do is accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. We then pray and ask Him to change us to help us to become righteous and holy in His sight. Third, pick up that Bible! Ok, I know that reading may not be your favorite pastime, but I have to tell you that if you ask God to change you and make you holy He will. Part of this process is reading the Bible. I mean, how can you get to know a person if there is no communication? God knows what you want, need, feel, and desire. In order to know who God is and what He wants for your life, you need to read your Bible. That is

how He communicates with us. The Bible explains what He expects from us and it teaches us who God is. He is the Father, the Son, the Healer, the Alpha and Omega (beginning and end). There is so much to God that we will never learn it all in this lifetime, but with each new revelation comes a new peace, joy, rejoicing, and pleasure.

We have learned that the first step in training is to accept Jesus as Lord. Next, pray. Prayer is our direct phone line to God; there is no busy signal or being on hold. In addition, it is a two-way line of communication. It is fine to tell God everything and ask God for everything, but don’t forget to listen to God for everything. The third step in training is reading your Bible, thereby getting to know your coach. Finally, there is a fourth step—meditate on what you learn. What does this mean? Meditation is thinking about the verses you read in the Bible. It is like having the best desert you ever tasted.

Once, when I was about 17 years old, I went to dinner with my Aunt Janet and Uncle Ken in Deerfield, Michigan. We had dinner, and then came desert. Now keep in mind, I am a chocolate freak! However, on this day for some reason, apple pie and vanilla ice cream just sounded appealing, so that is what I ordered. The apple pie and ice cream arrived on a white ceramic plate, nothing special, no extra decorations, just a plain plate. The smell of the made-from-scratch crust and baked apples filled my nostrils as I inhaled deeply. The smell was so comforting.
