Chapter One
A family comes home
I t has been a little over three years since my wife Nandini and I travelled to India from our home in Australia. At that time we had made the decision to adopt two sweet little twin girls, Lakshmi and Gita from the orphanage in the village of Mangalam, in Southern India. We were also very pleased to have the chance to visit my spiritual teacher, advisor and mentor, Swami One Being, during our stay.
Swami One, as I like to call him, had given Nandini and I his blessing to adopt the children, and to start a new life in Australia as a family. He also reminded us that it was important for the children not to become estranged from their culture. The culture of India, the land of saints, sages and holy men. India - the land of spiritual wealth and sharply contrasting physical poverty.
At that time I imagined that for Lakshmi and Gita, the journey to a new country would feel something akin to travelling to another planet. They had come from a poor, rural village in southern India, where the streets were mostly unpaved dirt roads, and where livestock and other animals roamed about freely. The buildings were often poorly constructed huts made of very porous bricks, and there were few modern conveniences in the village. Water had to be pumped manually from the one and only available well, and power outages happened often without warning. This I concluded was mainly due to the fact that the maze of electrical circuits was connected to a massive virtual birds nest of wiring on each light pole.
As events transpired, our adoption of the twins proved to be a rather long, protracted experience. After many months of waiting for movement in the world of government departments, we finally obtained permission to bring our little daughters home to Australia.
I had made a promise to the girls that we would stop over in Singapore on our way home as a special treat. As our plane started making the descent in preparation for landing, the twins clung on to us like little limpets, poor things. They were excited about their new experiences, but were also a little scared. From now on Nandini and I would have to get used to a continual barrage of questions from them. What is this? What is it for? What does it do etc?
We spent a week on holiday in Singapore, visiting some of the wonderful tourist highlights there. The girls absolutely loved the Singapore zoo. They especially loved the monkeys, apes and elephants.
During the Asian elephant show we were standing near the front of the enclosure. At the end of the show, one of the elephants sprayed water at us with its trunk. We all screamed in surprise and laughter. Oh! That means we will have good luck!
Lakshmi exclaimed and giggled.
Seeing the wonder and surprise in our little girls’ eyes, and experiencing new things with them was an overwhelmingly beautiful experience. Nandini was brimming with happiness in her new role as their mother. I also was discovering a brand new blend of delight, and contentment. It was a good feeling.
I felt an incredible sense of gratitude for the blessings in our lives. If I could have hugged God there and then I would have. Instead, I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and whispered softly.
Thank you.
Chapter Two
India Calling
S ince arriving home from India, I had started writing about my experiences in India, and especially the time spent with Swami One. I was amazed at the depth of his wisdom, and at the simplicity of his message. I felt that I wanted the whole world to share in this wonderful treasure that I had discovered. My life now seemed to be divided into two parts – the before India time and after India. I felt as though I had been born into the same life twice.
To my disappointment I found that people just weren’t interested in this spiritual discovery. I couldn’t understand it. I felt that here I was practically handing them the answers to life’s deepest mysteries, and yet friends and acquaintances responded, Yeah, that’s really cool Glen…what else have you been doing lately?
I was crestfallen to say the least. They would get that kind of bored, glazed look in their eyes. You know the one I mean – like hearing an elderly relative relate the same story yet again for the tenth time, kind of look. I decided that I would tone down my enthusiasm and wait until someone showed at least a flicker of curiosity before I launched into the whole story. When they needed to know, they would ask - I decided.
After a few months, a slow trickle of interest started to emerge from people enquiring about Swami One and his teachings.
