    CHAPTER ONE

T he dust has settled, after being in the home I cherish so much for a month, it has become my prison. How many times can one count their silver, china, and Waterford crystal?

My son, Frances III, and his wife, Lucy, as well as my darling grandchildren, have adjusted well to their new lives in New York.

Though it has been an adjustment for all of us, living together has been a delight for me as I watch my grandchildren enjoy their new beginnings here.

Catherine is growing taller daily, as is my grandson, Frances IV. Life has become interesting around the manor when calling both Frances; so I refer to my son as Fran, that way we don’t have any confusion.

My daily routines are always the same, up at 5:00 AM to have my spot of tea and read the financial reports of E.L.C. (Elliott Corporation), my daily conference call with my daughters, Tranice and LaVern, and then dressed in my business attire and off to the office by 7:00 AM.

On this morning it was rather cold outside, around 21 degrees, so I bundle up in my full length Russian sable fur and hat to match. My driver, Miles, sits idle, waiting for me in one of our corporate limousines.

Good morning, Lady Elliott, as he held the door open.

Miles, don’t you mean it’s a rather cold morning, Lady Elliott? As I smiled.

Yes, Lady Elliott, it’s a rather cold morning.

After getting into my car I received a call from my dear friend and ally, Paulie…

    Good morning, Paulie.

Clarice, how are you doing this morning?

Doing well…and what do I owe the pleasure of this early morning call?

Always to the point, Clarice…I like that! But you are right, I need to chat with you this morning. Do you have time to meet for breakfast?

    Of course, Paulie…where?

Come to my home, Clarice, and Carol will have breakfast prepared for you and I, then we can talk.

Okay, Paulie, I will have Miles to bring me now.

    Good. See you soon.

I tapped the intercom in the car and redirected Miles to the Casadiano estate.

As we drove, my thoughts were that it must be about his relationship with LaVern, which concerned me greatly, so I called her…

Yes, Mother, I’m heading to work. What can I do for you?

Sweetheart, Paulie just asked to see me. Before I sit down with him, is everything okay between you two, Darling?

Well, Mother, based on last night’s rendezvous I would say he’s well pleased. Would you like the details?

Of course not, Darling. You can spare me those details. And just remember, be good or be better. See you at the office once I’m done.

Alright, Mother, I will see you then.

Moments later I arrived at Paulie’s grand estate, with its grand entrance, extreme beauty, and increased security.

Greeted at the door by his servant…

Lady Elliott, please come in and have a seat. May I have your coat?

Yes! As I handed him my coat, hat and gloves.

    Clarice! You look stunning.

    As we hugged each other…

Paulie, it’s good to see you, My Friend.

Likewise…come into my office. Carol will bring breakfast in momentarily.

How is your wife doing, Paulie? I know she must be grieving the loss of a brother and husband.

Paulie looked strange when I said husband, as he said…

    Husband, Clarice?

Yes, Paulie, she lost you to my daughter, as I chuckled.

    Ah…cute, Clarice.

So, Paulie, tell me why am I here so early in the morning?

    Clarice, I am concerned.

    About what, Paulie?

Your family may be in grave danger.

    DANGER?! What? Why?

    Clarice, it’s the Jersey family.

I stood up and became agitated rather quickly and said…

Paulie, I thought you had taken care of everything! Frank is dead!!

Yes, Clarice, DeStefano is dead and now they want answers.

Paulie, I thought the answer was given quite clearly. He was shot in the head! How much clearer can you be?

    Paulie smirked, then said…

Clarice, we would like to think death is the end. But you and I know it’s just the beginning, and someone will have to answer, and somebody will pay. The question is who, Clarice? Who will pay for your existence?

At that moment there was a knock on the door, Carol bringing in breakfast for two.

Paulie twisted his lips and cut his eyes toward the door and said…

    Come in, Blue Eyes.

    Good morning, Clarice.

Good morning, Carol, as I looked toward her and watched as she set the table for her husband and I.

Paulie, is there anything else I can get you?

No, Blue Eyes, everything looks good. I just need privacy now with Clarice.

    Very well, Sweetheart…Goodbye, Clarice.

    I leaned into
