Fay Lorraine Sueltz, AIA, CASI, ICC, practices Architecture in Southern California. She is also an architectural consultant regarding the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act and the California Building Code. The emotional intelligence of her pet Standard Poodle, Prince, compelled her to write about his adventures and also theirs together as a volunteer Pet Therapy Team at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, California.

Preface
While out for a summer evening walk along the outdoor cafes in Coronado, California, I noticed a delightful and elegant black and white fluffy dog sitting tall beside a dinner table. She was gorgeous! Not knowing what to expect, I asked her owner about the breed of the striking animal. Standard Poodle
was the reply and I was invited to pet her. Her name was Dolly and her gentle nature and soft curls had me asking more questions. I had no idea poodles came in the size of a Labrador retriever, only much taller.
Dolly’s breeder had several pups available for adoption at the time I met her and I was given the contact information.
When I called to discuss owning a Standard Poodle with Dolly’s dog breeder, I was assured that my apartment with only a balcony to the outdoors would be a fine home for a poodle puppy. Poodles, I was told, like to be in close contact with their humans. When not racing around outdoors under supervision, they become couch potatoes near their owner’s feet.
I went to just take a look at the breeder’s puppies a few days later. Once there, I fell for my Prince.
In further research on my own later, I discovered the Poodle’s original size as a hunting dog is about 40-60 lbs. Pudlehoud
