Business Secrets for Walking on Water - Frank Zaccari
CHAPTER 1
Everything You Want is on the Other Side of Fear
Just being ourselves is the biggest fear of most humans. We have learned to live our lives trying to satisfy other people’s demands. We have learned to live by other people’s point of view because of the fear of not being accepted and of not being good enough for someone else.
Don Miguel Ruiz – The Four Agreements
During my speaking engagements, I interact with many people who once had a dream or a vision but lacked the courage to face their fears and take action. They simply settled.
Recently, I spoke to one of my customers who had achieved a fair amount of success in his life. He told me he went back to visit his hard luck
hometown after forty-eight years. It is a small town on Lake Erie that had never recovered from the loss of the steel mills many years ago. While there, he encountered a few friends from his childhood who had never left. These were people he has known his whole life. They decide to meet for lunch and catch up.
As he drove to the restaurant, he saw what was once a vibrant downtown, now abandoned and boarded-up buildings. Get the picture!
As they sat in the restaurant overlooking Lake Erie, my customer looked out over the lake and saw the old power plant that once employed over 2,000 people. It was now vacant. Not one car was in the parking lot.
As he looked to his right, he saw a large empty field full of weeds where one of the five steel mills that employed over 15,000 people once stood.
One of the friends said, You were lucky. You had the opportunity to go to college, to get out of here, and build a lucrative career. I never had that opportunity.
Upon hearing this, the man’s initial reaction was anger, but he controlled it. He took a deep breath to collect his thoughts then replied, There was no luck involved. I chose to get the hell out. Growing up, we all imagined that someday we would go to college and become successful. We all had the same vision back then.
The man continued, When it came time to go to college, I didn’t have the money, and my family certainly didn’t have the money. So, I made a choice. I chose to join the military. It delayed my vision by four years, but I was able to save some money, and with help from the GI bill, I went to college.
One of the friends said, We remember when you did that. We thought you were crazy. You enlisted during the Vietnam War. There was no way we were going to do that.
The man took another deep breath then said, Well, gentlemen, I guess we all have to live with our choices.
Now, what happened here? All these old friends had imagination and a vision, but only one chose to do whatever it took to realize his vision. What choice are you going to make? Are you going to say, I am what I am, and nothing I do will change anything?
Or are you going to say, What If?
and have the courage to face your fears?
I recently read The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. He wrote:
Taking action is about living fully. Inaction is sitting in front of your television every day for years because you are afraid to be alive and to take the risk of expressing what you are or can be. You can have many great ideas in your head, but what makes the difference is the courage to take action. Without action upon an idea, there will be no manifestation, no results, and no reward.
Remember this, I didn’t have the opportunity
is not a reason or an excuse. It’s a choice.
Whether you are a business owner, aspire to be one, or work for an organization, odds are you are not living your passion. If you are like 84% of the population, you aren’t fully engaged at work. Pre-COVID, you spent ten hours a day at work with a one-hour commute each way. Twelve hours of your day were spent doing something you did not enjoy. Who knows what life will be like Post-COVID? Now you have an opportunity to press the reset button, to discover what you really want to do in life, to make a change. You get to choose whether you are a participant in your life or a spectator.
Maybe you are one of the 16% who is fully engaged. Let’s do a reality check. Do you love what you do? Are you excited to get up every morning and face the daily grind? Even if you are happy, I’m willing to bet that some of the time, you still wish you were doing something else, something you were completely passionate about. Be honest.
Did you give up your passion in exchange for the security of a steady paycheck? Did you keep delaying the dream because you just bought a bigger house, and the kids will be going to college in a few years? Did you keep justifying keeping the dream on hold because you haven’t yet won the lottery or inherited millions of dollars? Are you holding back because you don’t know how to get started? Or are you waiting for someday
to come? Well, the bad news is that there is no day on the calendar called someday.
Lewis Carroll wrote: IN THE END… We only regret the chances we didn’t take, the relationships we were afraid to have, and the decisions we waited too long to make.
Is it time to move beyond your fears and have the life that you intended to live? If you are, call me. We’ll talk. I’ll help you discover the courage to get what you want. That will be discussed in the next chapter.
Stepping Stones for Business Success
1. Be prepared to face your fears. As Joseph Campbell wrote: The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.
2. I didn’t have the opportunity
is not a reason or an excuse. It’s a choice.
3. You get to choose if you are a participant in your life or a spectator.
CHAPTER 2
Do You Have the Courage to Get What You Want
Too many organizations treat heart and emotions, especially vulnerability, as liabilities. The problem is when we imprison the heart; we kill courage. When we kill courage, trust, innovation, creativity, and accountability die too.
Brene Brown – Dare to Lead
As mentioned in the introduction, I’m a radio/TV show host. In the fourth episode, before really knowing what I was doing, Mel Robbins was my guest. For those not familiar with Mel Robbins, she has spent the past decade inspiring, motivating, coaching, and elevating people worldwide. Her practical, no-nonsense advice has changed the lives of millions with a blueprint on how to take charge of your life and conquer everyday challenges. She is one of the most sought-after motivational speakers in the world and an international best-selling author. Mel’s inspirational message of hope and positivity has helped so many over the last decade turn their lives around for the better.
In 2017, Mel broke self-publishing records with her international best-seller. The 5-Second Rule was named the #1 audiobook globally and the fifth most read book of the year on Amazon. Mel is the author and voice of three #1 audiobooks on Audible and the co-founder of 143 Studios, Inc., a digital media company that produces content in partnership with Fortune 500 brands. In January of 2019, a quarter of a million people took part in her free 30-day Mindset Reset program online; and she started The Mel Robbins Show,
a nationally syndicated television talk show.
Her TEDx talk, How to stop screwing yourself over,
has 24 million views. She shared during our interview that the TEDx talk was her first-ever public speaking event.
She said, before the TEDx talk, her life had hit absolute rock bottom. She was staring at bankruptcy, divorce, no career, and virtually no hope. From this place of near hopelessness, she created her now famous The Five Second Rule.
Mel said many inspiring things, and two points from her book, The Five Second Rule, stuck with me:
When you are stuck, the major task is deciding if you’re going to change at all. The challenge is finding the ability, in the face of an overwhelming amount of resistance, to create a small change in your life and build on it.
Mel Robbins – The Five Second Rule
Now let’s think about that statement. The keyword is if. Mel didn’t say when you change or you must change; she said, deciding if you are going to change.
Too often in our personal and business life we become overwhelmed with a sense of doom. How many times have you heard someone say, It is what it is, and nothing I can do is going to change the situation?
And then, instead of reaching out to people who can help us, we become paralyzed by fear and uncertainty.
The second point she made was:
If you have the courage to start, you have the courage to succeed.
Mel Robbins – The Five Second Rule
I believe we hold the power to change, improve, and find the strategic partners who can change our life or business trajectory IF we have the courage to
