About this ebook

If empowerment of learning through real-life examples is at the hearts and minds of the stakeholders, then the Project-Based Learning (PBL) is one of the powerful teaching methods that can be readily deployed. The PBL teaching methodology can be highly effective in enhancing engagement, communication, strengthening of teamwork, and collaboration among the learners. These attributes are specifically emphasised and articulated in the National Education Policy 2020 of the Government of India.  The PBL approach is also found to be very useful for instilling 21st century skills.  Teachers become facilitators, coaches, consultants, and mentors for effectively implementing the PBL teaching methodology. If empowerment of learning through real-life examples is at the hearts and minds of the stakeholders, then the Project-Based Learning (PBL) is one of the powerful teaching methods that can be readily deployed. It is heartening to note common as well as differing viewpoints of the participants.

C:\Deepak Waikar\Deepak\dlw\2020\Deepak Waikar July 2020.jpg If empowerment of learning through real-life examples is at the hearts and minds of the stakeholders, then the Project-Based Learning (PBL) is one of the powerful teaching methods that can be readily deployed.

The online International Teachers/Faculty Development Programme (I-T/FDP) provided an avenue for the participants to experience basic as well as special features of the PBL from 5th May to 20th May 2021. There was an invigorating debate about the teacher versus facilitator dilemma. There were series of individual and group micro-projects and assignments given to the participants. Individual and group sharing sessions provided a forum for expressing alternative ideas, views, and opinions.  Through facilitators and peers, participants also learned how to make use of online tools and platforms in the PBL style.

This e-book on The Project-Based Learning – Engaging in Real-World challenges is an expression of feelings of the rigorous learning journeys of the participants during the I-T/FDP.  It became a real-world challenge for the facilitator, participants, and the editorial board to piece together about seven micro-projects in the form of learning journeys.  As such, each participant has shared with us a pragmatic experience which can be useful for those who wish to consider the PBL as one of the teaching methods. It is heartening to note common as well as differing viewpoints of the participants.

It is to be noted that each article was reviewed by two reviewers from the editorial board. It is envisaged that the experiences of the participants through the I-T/FDP will encourage many more teachers and faculty members to consider the PBL as one of the preferred teaching methodologies in the near future.

The e-book will also appeal to the progressive minds of the senior management of the education institutions, policymakers, administrators, and researchers who may have been assessing and evaluating the PBL.

As an Editor-in-Chief of this e-book, I feel honoured to share it with readers.

The e-Book is expected to enliven, virtually, the experiences of the learning journeys of the participants of the I-T/FDP on the PBL in the hearts and minds of the readers.

We, the members of the Editorial Board, invite your comments, views, and suggestions.

    Thank you,

    Message from Dr.K.M.Bhandarkar, Editor

It’s a pleasure to write few words about e-book titled ‘PBL-Engaging in Real World Challenges’. It is undoubtedly clear that if curriculum and pedagogies do not correlate with the real life of the learner then he/she will not be able to face the challenges of real life.

The NEP, 2020 underlines the importance of innovative methods and PBL happens to be the most important amongst them. The present book is the collection of experiences of 25 sincere learners. It is interesting to note that how the inspiring learning journey of about 50 hours duration on PBL is perceived and reflected differently by the learners belonging to different ages. It was the magic of Mentor and Chief Facilitator of the programme, Dr. Deepak Waikar who successfully maintained homogeneous learning environment throughout the learning journey. Sharing of ideas/views with Dr. Sandhya Khedekar, Dr. Neelima Bhagabati, Dr. Archana Bhattacharjee and other members of the group, was indeed a great and unforgettable learning experience.

Message from Prof. Nilima Bhagabati, Editor

I am immensely happy that with initiative of EduEnergy, Singapore and in collaboration with Council for Teacher Education Foundation –Assam Chapter an International virtual Teachers/ Faculty development programme from 5th to 20th May 2021 was organized on virtual platform. Dr. Deepak Waikar, Programme Designer, Chief Facilitator and the Managing Partner of EduEnergy framed the entire module of the programme on the theme – Strategies for Artistically Facilitating Project Based Learning programmes. Dr. Sandhya M. Khedekar, Principal, GES college of Education, Maharashtra, coordinated the fifteen days I-TDP.  The programme was highly impactful in training the teacher participants to bring a paradigm shift in Education by introducing the concept and hands on practice in Experiential, Explorative, communicative, interactive and above all learning by doing based on learning centric Education which is highly focused in National Education Policy-2020 and to be soon implemented in the Nation. It is highly welcome and appreciable that EduEnergy has brought out an online book entitled ‘Project Based Learning- A real world challenge- throwing and focusing on PBL and its application in teaching 21st century learners. The book is expected to be of optimum utility and benefit to the entire Teaching Professionals.
