Marry Your Chameleon - Lauren K Nixon

    The rain didn’t come.

This is how it started here:

    Parched grass, no relief.

    before

    this is how it begins

or how it begins for me

    with a haircut

i was nervous on the bus

already there was that sense of

    something sinister crowding in

    something murky something big

dark bruised clouds on the horizon

gathering on the edges of the valley

    making us feel small

i’d postponed plans to visit Mum

    we both agreed three trains

were too many too big a risk.

    i worried over Niall’s show

    and where he worked

    but he’s stubborn

    and thinks me over-cautious

    none of us really understood

    the tide that was coming

    to overcome us not then

i sat in a café in that day

more aware than I have ever
