About this ebook
Lost and confused, Michael wanders into a strange, dark land filled with even stranger characters. He and his newfound friends have nothing to do but wait in the darkness until an unseen force carries them to The Outside for indeterminate periods of time. Theodore and Maggie, the elders of the group, have come to terms with this strange existence, but not everyone is so lucky. The eccentric Jack and an enchanting woman by the name of Vanessa have been pushed to the brink of insanity by their tumultuous experiences with The Outside. As Michael settles in to this new life, a question looms overhead: What exactly is a Sorting and why does it threaten to change Michael's life forever? This play was performed in 2010 at the Ottawa Youth Infringement Festival and is now available in print for the very first time; complete with an introduction from Stephanie Anne that looks back at the serendipitous events that occurred before and after the performance of this short play.

Introduction
Let’s go back in time for a moment. It’s 2010, I’m in the second year of my undergraduate program at the University of Ottawa. I’ve recently decided that I no longer want to major in theatre. Instead, I’m keeping theatre as my minor while I switch to a major in English. I’m walking down the stairs of the theatre building after finishing class, and I spot a poster. The Youth Infringement Festival is looking for playwrights under the age of 21. That’s me. I’m a theatre nerd, I love to write, I wrote a short play in high school that was performed, and I’m under 21. I take down all of the necessary information and make my way home. I let my imagination do the groundwork on the bus ride home.

Oh, and it’s Friday.

The play needs to be submitted by Sunday night.

I had this image swirling around in my brain days before I even saw the poster. You know the kind. Sometimes us creative types just get a flash of something and we need to turn it in to art. This image, my flash of something, was of two people. They were lovers, and there was darkness all around them. They were being separated. I took that mental image and ran with it.

I consider myself lucky that I’m usually able to churn out good work under a strict deadline. It took me no time at all to create something I was
