Rebekah Lipp

Bex Lipp was co-founder of award-winning business Awesome Inc, which started around creating gratitude journals, and was a great base to launch into publishing children’s books. Bex also co-wrote the book ‘Finding Gratitude’ through Quarto Publishing in the US. Bex’s own personal story of struggles with mental health issues led her to come up with the idea of making a picture book around the emotions associated with anxiety. With a passion to bring awareness to the mental health of children from her own personal story, Bex has now been asked to speak at events around the topic of the creation of Aroha’s Way, anxiety and mental health. After going through two years of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, after ending up in crisis in her early twenties, Bex felt there was a real gap in what the professionals knew and what parents and teachers needed to know. Bex strongly feels that we can empower our children with skills to help prevent them from ending up in crisis like she did. Using the skills she has learnt throughout her journey with anxiety, depression, self-harm, body dismorphia and Borderline Personality Disorder she is creating books with messages to help children connect with their emotions and learn ways to regulate them. With a gentle parenting approach, Bex feels that all children have genius within them and if we act out of a place of compassion, kindness and love, we will see our children thrive.

    Chapter 1

Evangeline hated her family so much that she often thought about running away. After all, anything had to be better than living with them, right? There were only two things that kept her from leaving – her youngest brother Tamond, whom she adored, and all the animals she cared for on the farm. She knew that without her there, Tamond and the animals would be left in the hands of her parents and three other brothers. She just couldn’t leave.

Looking out across the farm from the kitchen window, Eva sighed. A huge stack of filthy dishes were piled high for her to wash while her brothers played computer games and watched television.

Eva never had much spare time because her parents made sure she always had plenty of chores to do. If she wasn’t washing the seemingly never-ending pile of dishes, she was doing the laundry, cooking meals, making beds, feeding animals, or cleaning the bathroom. And then there was the toilet. Oh, the toilet… in a house full of boys. It was so gross!

Eva’s parents believed that it was a girl’s duty to clean and cook for the rest of the family, which is why she ended up doing all the chores whilst her brothers did nothing. She was sure they hadn’t wanted a daughter, but now she was here at least they were able to use her to keep the house in order as they all sat around being waited on.

Eva’s father was a noticeably short man. He was bald but pretended he wasn’t by growing the hair on the sides of his head long and scraping it across his big, shiny scalp. He had a lumpy red nose and his massive belly looked like it had been over-inflated using a bicycle pump. He was always a bit sweaty, like he had been running, even though he would never do that. He didn’t say much, apart from yelling demands at Eva. His favourite one seemed to be, ‘BRING ME SOME FOOD!’

When he wasn’t eating, doing the bare minimum around the farm, or sleeping, he was watching sport or horse racing on television. In short, he spent most of his days sitting on his exceptionally large bottom.

Eva’s mother was only slightly taller than her father, so still quite short. She was slim, with olive skin, black, wavy hair and green eyes.

Eva wondered if her mother had been beautiful once, before all the years of anger
