My name is Dr. Sharon Campbell-Phillips. I am from Trinidad and Tobago. I am very enthusiastic about community work and the development of others. I am also very passionate about conducting research and writing as it allows me the opportunity to share my knowledge with others and educate them as well as enhance and develop myself.

I am currently employed with the local government of Trinidad and Tobago where I work at the Division of Community Development. This Division is dedicated to developing communities so that persons’ standard of living can be enhanced.

Education plays a critical role in our lives and it is a bit blurry when to imagine what type of society we would have without education, and how we will function as individuals. Attending school and acquiring education is very critical to our development and it plays a major role in our life’s journey. Education is the foundation of a successful career, financial freedom, the ability to think and reason critically, and to make informed decisions. Without education, we will be limited to perform tasks and we will be ignorant to the things that are happening in and around our surroundings, and according to Martin Luther King, a people without knowledge is like a tree without roots. For education to be of great value, there are many factors that need to be considered, for example, curriculums should be implemented. Curriculums are learning guides that are governed by a school board that is designed to address students’ educational needs, facilitate learners while establishing relationships between teachers and students.  They state the learning objectives, the grade letter and percentages, and the topics that are to be taught, and the specific order. It also lists the content, materials, resources, and the process for evaluating the set objectives. Education and curriculums are connected and share a relationship in which both of them are enhanced. Education is highly recognized when its foundation is that of an effective curriculum. It is very important as students pay close attention to such especially when comparing and selecting schools in which to attend. Curriculums can enhance education, boost the reputation of schools and attract learners. In Trinidad and Tobago, the education system caters to children from ages five (5) to eighteen (18), which is within the public sector. The education system consists of both primary and secondary schools. However, within the private sector, there are schools that include kindergarten, primary, secondary, colleges, and universities. The education system in Trinidad and Tobago is influenced by politics, the government, and wealthy entrepreneurs. For the public sector, the purposes of education are 1. to develop the country, 2. to develop the citizen’s minds and character, and to educate them about what is current about what is currently taking place in their environment as well as globally. The education system within the private sector takes into consideration the working class who are interested in pursuing their education. Unfortunately, despite the many persons educating themselves, jobs are still unavailable and many persons unemployed. Some of the reasons for education in Trinidad and Tobago are similar as well as different to that of other countries but one of their common focuses is developing their country. Education is a process that facilitates learning while providing knowledge and skills which is transferred from persons to persons. Learning is done through different mediums such as research and discussion. Dictionary.com defined education as a process whereby persons transfer knowledge and information. 

According to the World Bank’s view, as it relates to education, it is said that education plays a critical role in poverty reduction, enhancing one’s standard of living and creating stability. It is both a guided process and an individual’s self-educating commitment. Based on one’s society and culture, the younger persons are usually trained by those that are older. Due to a person’s understanding, knowledge of subjects and topics, and life experiences, he/she is considered well-educated and academically wealthy.

In order for learning to be achieved, there are educational instructions within the system that must be followed, so that persons can understand, assess, critically, and successfully analyze, evaluate, make informed decisions and judgments which is very important to one’s development. The education process includes years of attending a school that ranges from preschool to university while incorporating many subjects and even cultures. Also, for learning to be realized, each teacher must teach truthfully and with clarity. Both students and teachers must be clear with the topics discussed otherwise confusion in the mind will be developed and the learning outcome will be a negative one. In some societies, learning is not achieved due to the unavailability of education as a result of a variety of barriers. However, every individual should have an equal opportunity to education without being discriminated against. The way in which a teacher presents students with a subject matter is very critical towards their learning; teachers should be well organized and should interact with each student. They also need to reinforce behaviors by using the various methods that are available. It is expected that teachers will be committed, focused, and willing to work with the students and impart knowledge to them. It is important that both the teachers and the students succeed at the objectives that they had set forth. Sadly, just like the American, many children do not receive the level of education that they deserve. Education should be a priority in society because, without it, the countries will be underdeveloped in all areas, citizens will be unable to achieve and it will increase crime and poverty. Lack of education is a burden on individuals and by extension the society and it will also increase the rate of illiteracy. As a people, we need to understand that we have a responsibility to impart our knowledge to others by educating them so that they can be equipped to make positive contributions to the development of society. Education is both theories as well practical and it is the foundation for all career paths; it also helps in enabling persons to resolve problems and issues that they are faced with. It also helps in forming relationships and helps in building communities while enhancing the stand of living for many persons. Education is a very important factor in our lives and is crucial to the way we live. As a teacher, when I teach, I include the various factors of the environment.

 It is important that children learn not just about the physical, but the social elements that influence learning and help in the personal development of each learning. The physical factors of the environment include the structural classroom where students and teachers spend a certain amount of face-to-face contact hours, and students are provided with desks to sit on while the teachers teach and they have interactions. The physical structure is equipped with lighting, labs, technical equipment, and other fixtures that are used for resources and supplements. Factors of the social environment that I use when teaching include the building of relationships between myself and the students. I also teach in regards to culture and its norms which is of great value to the classroom. I also aim to be very polite and approachable to students and encourage communication which helps in motivating them and allows them to seek my assistance when they are faced with situations. My philosophical stance is that students must be developed holistically and not be limited to textbooks. Holistically means that focus will be placed on the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual. My belief has allowed me to have successful learning outcomes among students and it has been endorsed by my superiors. However, from the many global perspectives, I learn the differences and similarities among cultures about their views on the purpose of education. It is somewhat alarming to me to see how and what students across the globe are trained to learn. A classroom environment is very important to the learning outcome and development of children. It should be one that is student-friendly and promotes learning. It is the place where teachers influence the behavior of students so that they can develop, excel and achieve their academic goals. Within the classroom, students learn to form positive relationships; learn the value of teamwork as well as working independently, voice their opinions, understand the benefits of collaboration, and also discover their strengths and weaknesses. The classroom environment serves as a human development center where the focus is on the holistic development of the students, allowing them the opportunity to live their full potential. This is where students spend most of their time with their teachers as they learn the necessary skills which are useful and helps them in achieving their learning objectives. However, within the classroom, there must be established rules and procedures that will enhance learning. Without rules in the classroom, there will be no order and the classroom will be disorganized and learning will be affected greatly. 

Rules also help teachers to discipline students and teach them responsibility and self-control, therefore, rules should be reinforced regularly. Based on the rules and procedures that are used in the classroom can either promote and enhance learning or hinder the classroom’s objectives, therefore, teachers need to be mindful of their approach when creating and setting rules within the classroom as have a positive or negative effect on the students and their learning outcomes. For rules and procedures to create positive classroom environments and they must be clear, easy to understand, and remember, they must aim to create order within the classroom and they must be in accordance with the school’s policy. They must be generally fair to the students while addressing their needs and should be easily enforceable and they should satisfy the students’ parents. Teachers also need to clearly explain to the students what is expected of them and the consequences for not adhering to the rules. It should not be expected for students to change their behavior automatically, and because of such, the procedures and strategies that teachers may use within the classroom should empower students to do better. There are simple things that can be done to enforce those rules which include teachers providing each student with a list of the rules to take home so that their parents will be aware of them, and sticking up a list of the rules on the walls of the classroom. Also, teachers can have the students write down the rules in their books and then discuss them with them so that they will understand.

 It is believed that when the learning environment is positive, the learning outcomes of students are also positive. According to supporting writers, students learn better when they view the learning environment as positive and supportive. A positive environment is one in which students feel a sense of belonging, trust others, and feel encouraged to tackle challenges, take risks, and ask questions. Such an environment provides relevant content, clear learning goals and feedback, opportunities to build social skills, and strategies to help students succeed. Some types of rules within the classroom should be encouraged and some should be discouraged because of the fact that some make positive contributions and others negative ones. Those that contribute positively should be reinforced as they impact the students’ lives and help them to achieve success. On the other hand, those that are negative should be discouraged because they will affect learning negatively and will deprive them of succeeding academically and otherwise. 

When rules are created within the classroom, teachers can know if they would have created a positive or negative classroom environment; they will be change positive or negative and can be easily recognized as well as the behavior of the students socially and towards their education. If after implementing rules within the classroom, if the environment is one that is hostile, disorderly, and chaotic, while a positive environment will be one that creates a feeling of safety, welcoming, and appreciation, and one that is very supportive and promotes learning. When the classroom environment is positive, the teacher will notice that the stress levels of students are reduced and their cognitive functioning increased. A negative environment also seems to be one that is associated with threats and negativity, and the students’ self-esteem is usually affected. Learning can only take place when students feel comfortable in their environment which allows them to make positive classroom contributions as well as learn from others. A learning environment is one that seeks to address the needs of the learners and encourages interaction for growth among students and teachers. Additionally, teachers need to manage the classrooms in order for it to be positive so that learning can be achieved. They need to provide positive criticisms as opposed to negative ones, and compliment or award students on their achievements; they need to show appreciation so that it can be viewed as a motivation to the students. Teachers also need to discipline students in a professional manner instead of humiliating them and allow them to express themselves and state their opinions and views. However, while students should be allowed to be expressive, they need to be encouraged to maintain respect and positivity at all times. Critically, teachers need to be mindful of how they address situations; when they seek to correct the students’ negative behavior, they need to do so professionally and not highlight the individuals who have done wrong. In that way, the message is for everyone and not just a few.
