Once Parvati had requested Nandi to keep watch at the doorstep as she went to bath within the caves of Kailasa. But when Lord Shiva appeared at the door, Nandi was unable to stop his master and silently let him pass. Parvati was embarrassed at the sight of Shiva, who merely laughed at her plight. Parvati decided to have Her own attendant, who would report to none but Herself. She fashioned a young boy from the turmeric paste, she had kept aside after her bath. This image was infused with life and turned into a handsome youth, with exuberating energy. She gave him the same task of keeping watch over the entrance, and also gave him a staff in his hand. When Shiva approached the cave chambers, He was denied entry into the cave by the youth.
