    The Goonzies - Deborah Maree

    CHAPTER ONE

Away, away far… or far, far away somewhere in the midst of the Indian Ocean was an island – Turvy Topsy Goonzie Land. No one knew the island existed, other than those who lived there. The cargo ships and cruise liners never ventured near during their journeys on the ocean. It never featured on any map, but in reality, Turvy Topsy Goonzie Land really did exist.

Many animals resided on Turvy Topsy Goonzie Land. Bright pink giraffes with purple spots lived amongst the tall, blue leafy trees with their fat, yellow trunks and long, yellow branches. Bright fluorescent-green lions lived amongst the forest of shiny, royal-blue grass with the many sky-blue bushes, which grew on top of the bright, yellow dirt.

The huge heaving, yellow elephants camouflaged themselves amongst the solid yellow tree trunks, their bodies lost within the blue leaves. The bright purple monkeys swung from tree to tree using the many vines throughout their island, their home. They enjoyed playing jokes on the other animals, creating all sorts of havoc. There were purple and white striped, wild lily-flower tigers, who had plain white fur under their chins and down their chest, featuring a bright purple wild lily-flower emblem. The purple and white striped, wild lily-flower tigers were like gentle giants that enjoyed being looked after by the other animals.

The non-poisonous vivid rainbow-colour snakes slithered along the blue grass and up the tall trees. They often surprised their intended visitor because no one could hear them approaching.

White blackbirds flew through the skies in Turvy Topsy Goonzie Land. They felt threatened when the Goonzies walked vertically up the trees and veered too close to their nests. When this happened, the white blackbirds gently pecked the Goonzies or flapped their wings super-fast close to the Goonzies. An abrupt warning that gave the Goonzies a shock but never causing them any pain. This mainly occurred when the white blackbirds were sitting on their eggs or their newly hatched babies were too young to fend for themselves.

The pink and white striped bumble bees buzzed around Turvy Topsy Goonzie Land, where they pollinated all the plant life. The pink and white striped bumble bees knew they had the option to sting if they felt threatened, but they had no enemies, so their stingers were never used.

On Turvy Topsy Goonzie Land the sky was bright, burnt-orange. Never had a cloud been seen in the sky. All the colours on Topsy Turvy Goonzie Land were bright as bright can be. The Land was shaped like a red kidney bean, lying on its side. There was a beach to the south, matching to where a kidney bean turned inwards.

The west side of Turvy Topsy Goonzie Land featured a cove. The east side the land looked like it had been pushed through from the cove. The land protruded outwards, in the same shape as the cove.

The north of Turvy Topsy Goonzie Land had high cliffs which graduated round the outside of the island towards the beach, where the land was flat. True north of the island was the Great Volcano, which had been dormant for more years than anyone remembered. The Volcano was where the Goonzies slept.

Goonzies were creatures which grew to thirty centimetres tall. Each Goonzie was one solid colour in a corresponding colour of the rainbow. The first generation featured seven Goonzies. Each one had had two offspring at fifty years of age. Goonzies had lived on Turvy Topsy Goonzie Land for eighty years where two generations of Goonzies existed. As much as the Goonzies and animals talked amongst themselves, and to each other, no one knew how the Goonzies came to be on Turvy Topsy Goonzie Land.

The Goonzies looked like huge thimbles with arms and legs as thin as a piece of string. Their head and body featured circular furrows on the lower two-thirds and dot dimples on the upper third. At the end of their string-like arms were their hands. The hands were human-like with one thumb and four fingers. At the end of their string-like legs were their feet. Their human-like feet featured five toes on each foot.

Goonzies facial features looked remarkably human on their incorporated thimble head and body. They had wide circular eyes with a baby-button nose. Their mouths looked like a human mouth when closed but when they talked, which was very often, their lips mostly moved up and down like a squiggly line. The Goonzies’ ears were like human ears but rather than protruding from their heads, the ears were embedded in their heads.

Goonzies could change from girls to boys as they wished, like plants. The pink
