To the Muse who is larger than life…

Throughout my childhood, I was kept far from the village. I was taken from my parents before I even knew who they were and I never saw them again.

I was brought up in complete isolation in a palatial set of rooms that were carved into the side of the mountain. The outside ledges were home to many colorful birds and were nearly overgrown year-round with exotic flowers. There I lived out my childhood with an elderly woman named Camelia, who kept a strict eye on me, and who also taught me to read and write and how to maintain an archaic yet gracious home, as any elegant lady of my kind would.

Outside our stone gates that led down the mountainside, there were two-armed guards at all times. I was never to speak to them; never to look directly at their faces. My eyes were always to be lowered when I was in their presence. It is for your own safety, Camelia always said. And though I did as I was told, I did not understand.

I came into my womanhood late but Camelia assured me this was a good omen. I was already grown, with pronounced hips and noticeable breasts before the first full moon of my womanhood finally arrived.

It began as an uncomfortable nub on the tip of my mound as the moon began waxing in the night sky. The nub was so uncomfortable that I was forced to show it to Camelia, who then did something quite astonishing: She locked me in my room, drew all the blinds down tight, and summoned for the guards to bring two additional guards from the Oracle’s palace.

These were special guards, as I soon learned when Camelia unlocked my door and then allowed them to enter my room. Camelia did not stay. I was alone for the first time with strangers – men; guards I had never seen near our grounds before.

I was made to disrobe and, at first, I did not wish to do so until Camelia was brought in to encourage me. Her encouragement was to quickly grab hold of my arms and keep them held behind my back, while the guards untied the front of my robe and pulled it open, exposing my nakedness.

They did not notice my full breasts, nor did they look too closely at my modest place – only to remark on how smooth I was there, that it was a very good sign that I had grown no hair at all below my belly.

Yes, one of them said with satisfaction. The nub is quite visible. All we need to do is wait for the moon to become completely full and we will know for sure.

Know what? I asked, filled with more worry now than shame. But no one answered me. Instead, Camelia removed my robe entirely and quickly took the sash of it, tied my wrists tightly behind me with it and then, once more, left the room, leaving me alone, helpless, and now fully exposed in my nakedness to the palace guards.

Every hour that crept closer to a completely full moon, the guards took turns rubbing the nub on my mound and closely examining it, even measuring it with their fingers, as it seemed to grow bigger with each hour before our very eyes. I dreaded each new hour that approached because it focused the men’s renewed gaze upon my indecent immodesty. Even though it felt almost agreeable when they rubbed that growing nub of flesh, every time the nub grew larger, there was also more and more discomfort inside me – as if something down there was pushing up and up, trying
