A Darkness
Covers The World
Chapter I
The world was young at that time. The vail that hung between the world and other realms was thinner. It was possible for a person who possessed the power to pass from one realm to another. It was a time of magic both good and bad. There were different creatures who shared the world together. Many of the creatures along with humans enjoyed peace. There were however, those who did not want to get along and there were of course problems.
The human world had experienced a period of growth where people lived free and flourished building homes and small villages. There were also the more barbaric men and women who formed clans that roamed freely throughout the world. War was inevitable. Not only for humans but for the other creatures created by the Lord. Large tracts of forest were established being set aside to insure all trees were not cut down. It was important that ancient forests were not cleared for farmland.
The large forests were kept intact for wildlife as well as creatures who inhabited the trees. Men known as Rangers were placed in charge of the forest. The forest were Parks and Rangers would maintain them. These Park Rangers were dedicated men who allowed those who wished to take wood for fires to warm their homes, or cook their food to use as needed. With permission wood could be taken to build homes. Wildlife were also hunted with permission. The Parks were preserved so future generations would enjoy them. The forest was replanted by the Rangers when the old growth trees died.
There were those however, who chose to enter the forest and take wood or wildlife without permission. The thieves would often carry a large stick with a bent end with a hook on it. They would find a low hanging limb that was dead and with the long stick with the hook would pull the limb down. They would take the wood without permission by hook or by crook. If caught they would be punished by Park Rangers.
IT WAS IN THIS IDYLLIC setting early one morning three young girls played in a creek that gently flowed through the land the Rangers lived on. The meadow was alive with wildflowers. The fragrant flowers with the beauty of the vibrant colors swayed in the gentle breeze on a warm spring day. The young girls laughed as they waded into the cold water seeing small fish swimming by. Try as they may, the fish alluded the girls as they tried to catch them.
The young girls stopped playing as they heard beautiful music. Looking up they were surprised to see Fairies dancing on the top of wildflowers. Each stood transfixed seeing the beautiful small creatures. The young girls had been told of Fairies who lived in the ancient forest. They had never seen Fairies and each stood in awe seeing the small delicate creatures.
The Fairies with small delicate wings jumped and lightly touched down on the flowers as the music played. The young girls began to move toward the Fairies who danced so beautifully. The Fairies moved slowly from one flower to the next. The girls were drawn to the small beautiful creatures. The music and the dancing Fairies moved away from the open meadow to the dark forest. Each young girl had been told not to go into the forest alone. This warning was forgotten as the young girls followed the beautiful dancing Fairies into the ancient forest.
Hailey, who was the oldest by a year, realized they were in the ancient forest. The warnings of her Father and Mother rang in her ears. She stopped and looking around realized where she was.
Stop,
she said quietly.
The two younger girls looked at their cousin and each realized they were in the dark forest.
We should go back,
Hailey said softly.
The two girls nodded without speaking. They looked at the forest, remembering the warning.
The forest had an eerie feel. The sunshine was blocked by the tall trees with spreading branches. The leaves were thick on the large limbs making the forest dim. Holding hands the small girls walked without speaking. The fear welling up inside them.
Suddenly they saw several Fairies flying in formation. They stopped surprised. Hailey started to speak when the Fairies threw bright colored dust at the girls. They sneezed and feeling tired went to their knees then slumped over on the soft damp ground.
The Fairies quickly took out a thin thread wrapping it around the girls. The thread was thin but was strong with a magic spell. The young girls secured with the thin thread were picked up with effort by more Fairies who arrived. The Fairies flew holding the girls just above the ground. They had to stop and rest as the young human girls were heavy for the tiny but strong Fairies. They soon arrived at their home which was deep in the forest.
Faith Ann sat up slowly looking around, rubbing her eyes. She reached over, shaking her cousin Tanya Ann and Hailey. They both sat up looking around. Faith Ann saw she was in a meadow with soft grass with wildflowers. A tall ancient Elm tree providing shade. She saw a tightly woven string surrounding them. She watched as small Fairies flew down to them. The beautiful female Fairies smiled at the three young girls.
We have food for you if you're hungry.
A woman Fairy said, smiling.
Where are we?
Faith Ann asked just above a whisper.
"You're
