    CHAPTER 1

    N THE ISLAND OF AKONI, the perfect spot to watch the sunrise was at the edge of the Healing Forest, where the sunlight shimmered off the leaves and gave the land a golden sparkle. Everyone on Akoni knew of the Healing Forest–how it grew trees and plants of every shape and shade, and how they were used to heal the sick and injured. But only two people knew of this perfect sunrise spot: Leilani and her little brother, Kea.

    Together, they waited for the glow of the sun to reach their feet. Every so often, Kea jumped in the air and swung from the nearby branches, with his necklace bouncing on his chest. Giggling at her playful brother, Leilani sang:

    Just you and me and our top-secret spot

    Waiting for the sun ‘til our feet get hot

    Play and laugh, jump and sing

    Just a brother and sister doing their thing

    Kea plopped down next to his sister. I can’t believe you’re going to use all of this when you become a healer. He spread out his arms and gazed at the trees, the bushes, and the flowers. You’ll be the greatest person in the world!

    Leilani shook her head. How can I be the greatest person in the world? I’m only twelve.

    Well, I’m only eight, and I know I’m really great. I can tell you the names of almost every person on this island. That’s hard to do.
