There’s a saying: Success leaves clues. This is true. You can learn a lot about how to run a successful business by learning from others who have done so. Obviously, you know that…that’s why you’ve decided to pick up this book, to learn how others found their own light at the end of the funnel. Congratulations on your decision to learn from and be inspired by others who have done well on the entrepreneurial path.

The expression the toughest job you’ll ever love has been used to describe several endeavors, including the army, parenting, and the Peace Corps. I think it is also an appropriate description for most of us entrepreneurs, whatever our business might be.

As entrepreneurs, we write our own ticket as to how successful we can be, and we choose when and how we want to work. That’s a tremendous amount of freedom!

But for these freedoms, we trade the luxury of letting the buck stop somewhere else. We are responsible for everything!

When times are tough, being responsible for everything is a scary prospect. It’s the ability to take that risk on that makes entrepreneurs special people. While the responsibility can be scary, it is the key to our ability to succeed. No one else places limits on our success. Only we can do that.

We can stop doing it, too.

If we are not experiencing success to the extent that we want, we are resisting success to that same extent. I know that may sound crazy to some folks—Who on Earth would resist success?!?—but it’s true. It’s just rarely done consciously.

The prime directive of our subconscious mind is to keep us safe. Based on what we have been taught about success (mostly by people who knew little about real success, who were operating from misguided opinions rather than facts), we have likely been taught that too much is bad for us. How much is too much? Look at the success you have right now—that’s what you unconsciously believe is the appropriate amount. Anything more than that would be deemed unacceptable or even dangerous.

Rather than feeling discouraged if you aren’t where you want to be, congratulate yourself for getting where you unconsciously thought you were supposed to go. Thank your mind for all its efforts to keep you safe.

Then decide to change your mind.

For anyone familiar with my work, it won’t be surprising to know that my preferred method of changing a mind, including my own, is with tapping. Tapping through my own success blocks is what has allowed me to experience continually expanding success.

One of the key benefits of tapping is that it has allowed me to be more creative in how I conduct my business. While I’ve read different books, attended seminars, and taken courses—and have benefitted greatly from doing so—sometimes going with my hunches has worked the best for me. Plenty of business gurus now insist on the importance of using videos to boost your career. When I put my first video on YouTube, it was a new thing, and I hadn’t been told to do so, nor did I do it as a business move. I just had a desire to use this new resource to be of service. Ten years and roughly 750 videos later, a desire to be of service is still the reason for each one. Of course, it has also been a very good business tool.

The not-so-secret sauce is, as you may know, love. You’ve likely heard, Do what you love, and the money will follow. This has certainly been the case in my career. I didn’t think, Hmm… I need to get a job. What would make some good money? Aha! Tapping on my face! I just kept going with my gut feeling, I really enjoy doing this—in fact, I love this!

As many folks know, I started out as an actor, which is a very entrepreneurial career. I didn’t think of it that way, and despite a few wins (I’m not a doctor, but I played one on TV…on Days of Our Lives), I was not sufficiently successful. I looked for something to help me support my new family and trained to be a hypnotherapist, because I loved the idea of helping people harness the power of their minds.

A couple of years later, when our second child was on the way, I realized that doing personal development work was what I really loved. As much as I had loved acting, I knew I had found my true calling. We left Los Angeles and moved north. Shortly after, I learned about tapping, fell in love with it, and the rest is, as they say, history.

Oh, I’ve stubbed my toe a few times, too—sometimes really painfully. Some of my instincts have been way off the mark. Some never got off the drawing board, quite thankfully in retrospect. They would have been that embarrassing. Ah well... nobody’s perfect.

There are key ingredients to success, including being of service, doing what you love, and continuing to learn, grow, and improve at what you do. If you are willing to do that, I believe the outlook is very good for your career. Who knows what successes lay ahead for you… you may even be honored with an invitation to write the foreword for a book! (Thank you, Danielle).

Thank you for being willing to share your gifts and talents with the world. I hope you enjoy reading about others who have done the same.

    Integration for Greater Impact

    Danielle Fitzpatrick Clark

Can you share a moment in your entrepreneurial journey that was a huge Ah-Ha and gamechanger?

I remember it clearly. It was the day I literally dropped to my knees and screamed, I can’t take it anymore…

A little dramatic? Perhaps, and eye opening.

It was a Friday, and the morning had started insanely busy. My two oldest daughters needed help getting ready for school, my husband needed his shirt ironed for work, and the one-year old was wanting cuddles and comfort after coming off a nasty cold. On top of all that, it was only 7:30am in the morning and I already had fifteen emails that had been sent the night before around midnight from 3 different clients wanting work done by noon that same day.

I had thirty minutes to get my two oldest and the husband out the door, all with daughter number three on my hip as I made lunches, packed bookbags, filled water bottles, and gathered up shoes and socks for everyone. That morning, my husband went to work with a little more wrinkle in his shirt, because well...priorities. I felt a surge of guilt as I told him I wouldn’t be able to iron his shirt like I had promised the night before. I hate breaking promises.

Everyone made it out the door on time, and my youngest and I were ready for breakfast and email replies. I felt a lump in my throat as I read through the fifteen client emails. The common theme with all emails was, I want more. Two of the clients wanted to increase the scope of work and include it within the parameters of payments we had already finalized. So, more work, no more money. Another client wanted to shift everything in her business plan and wanted an emergency team meeting that morning to go over the new direction of her company.

As I read through each email the hairs on the back of my arms started to stand up, and stress and anxiety soon took over my body as I came to the realization, I’m going to have to work another weekend.

The thought of working another weekend, after eight months of working in my business 80+ hours per week was heartbreaking. I wanted to spend time with my family! I needed uninterrupted time, that didn’t require an emergency client call or fixing a website glitch or putting out another fire. That was THE LAST THING I wanted to do this upcoming weekend, a weekend I had promised myself I would take off to rest and rejuvenate. Yet, the people-pleaser in me didn’t feel like there was another choice, especially if I wanted to keep my clients happy. My family would forgive me, but I wasn’t so sure my clients would.

As the tears started to surge into my exhausted and overstrained eyes, I picked my youngest up from her high chair and placed her in the activity walker, so I could take a moment. I felt dizzy and short of breath as I walked into my bedroom and closed the door…and dropped
