The Courtship of Kate Rawlins - Tracy Boswell

    Chapter One

What the heck do you think you’re doing here?

Kate Rawlins stiffened at the rough male voice speaking behind her. She didn’t turn to face the man. She didn’t need to. She would have recognized that voice anywhere, though it had been almost five years since she’s last heard it.

And frankly, this was the last place she wanted to be hearing it now. She hadn’t been expecting to face him quite so soon. Wasn’t ready to face him. Not yet. Maybe that was cowardice, but...he had every right to hate her for what she had done.

She hadn’t wanted to hurt him, but there was no denying that she had. Almost as much as she’d hurt herself.

She quickly shoved those thoughts away as she carried on shifting the heavy boxes and crates to the tailgate of the wagon.

You didn’t answer my question, Kate. What are you doing here?

The job you hired my father to do. She strained to move one of the crates without damaging the contents inside.

She didn’t want anything to happen to her father’s photography equipment. It would be expensive to replace even if she had the time to spare to wait for replacements—which she didn’t. But more then that, the items had enormous sentiment value. To her, they were irreplaceable.

The crate refused to budge and she huffed out a frustrated breath. Do you think you could help me move this? she asked the man looming behind her like a dark cloud.

She didn’t need to look in his direction to know that his expression was likely just as stormy.

He ignored her question. "That’s right, I hired your father for the job. So, why isn’t he here? Where is he?"

Slumping against the wooden crate, Kate had to swallow the painful lump in her throat
