    There was a dead body lying behind the bakery.

    Catherine Lawrence couldn’t quite believe her eyes. Surely, there wasn’t a dead body lying on the ground in front of her, a large red stain of blood pooling on the concrete in the dark alley.

    The trash bag she’d been carrying to the dumpster slipped from her suddenly nerveless fingers as a scream got trapped in her throat. There was a slight chill in the early morning air, but that was not what caused the shiver down her spine.

    Sir, are you okay? she called out to him without any real hope of a response.

    He didn’t so much as let out a groan. Nor did he move. She edged slightly closer, with the intention of checking for some sign of life—a pulse or...something. But then she caught a glimpse of the man’s face, his sightless eyes staring at nothing.
