    Chapter 1

The heat of summer had rolled in early and settled into Kismet Bay for the upcoming months. Caprecia Strange hated really hot days, but she loved basking in the sunlight. She realized those two things could be at odds with themselves, but she’d always had a contrary nature. But then lately she’d been a veritable grouch. She hadn’t had much to be particularly happy about. Misery had settled in and kept her company on the regular.

It sucked that it wasn’t with her, but she didn’t find fault with him because he found a life outside of Kismet Bay. Sometimes she wished she could too. Her family lived in the little coastal village and she owned a business with her sister Leilia. They ran Grape Flavors Winery and a vineyard on the outskirts of town. She was happy. Mostly.

She wished she could find a way to brush away the sadness that permeated her entire being. It had settled in when she realized that she’d have to come face to face with
