    Sammy?

    The weak voice barely caught Samuel’s attention as he stole along the halls. He had tried to be silent but somehow Jonah had heard his quiet steps. It was unsurprising. Jonah had so little else to capture his interest; he knew every sound which the house made intrinsically.

    Quickly, Samuel hurried toward his brother’s room and peered inside.

    It never ceased to strike a terrified note in Samuel’s heart when he looked at his small sibling, the wan skin almost as pale as the pillows on which he was propped.

    His breaths came out jaggedly and Samuel rushed to his bedside.

    What is the matter? the older brother asked, his grey eyes wide with fear. What do you need?

    Jonah offered his small smile and shook his blonde head feebly.

    Nothing of importance, he assured Samuel. I was wondering if you were going into town today.

    Samuel bit on his lower lip. He had not intended to go but he sensed that Jonah wanted something and he could not refuse his brother a request.

    What would you like?

    Jonah watched him with hazel eyes.

    Were you intending to go? Jonah insisted.

    Yes, of course! Samuel fibbed. Tell me what I can get for you.

    Jonah’s eyes shifted toward his bedside table where half a dozen books sat stacked.

    My library books are overdue, he sighed. "Daed promised to bring them back days ago but he did not."

    Samuel nodded immediately and reached for them.

    I will return them, he said brightly but there was a stirring of unease in his gut. He had plans to meet with David and Sarah in half an hour.

    I can return them after we meet, he thought nervously but he knew he would be late returning home if he did that.
