    Good morning, Anna, the young man called from across the lane, his face lighting into a happy smile as he recognized the beautiful blonde on the other side of the street. Anna deliberately turned to her sister, ignoring his greeting.

    I am reminded of something suddenly; we must visit Mark Boyer for a side of pork from his butcher shop.

    Melinda gasped, her mouth dropping open at the blatant disrespect emanating from Anna’s mouth.

    Anna! He only said hello! No need to refer to him as swine, Melinda chided in a low whisper but their neighbor was already out of view. Anna smiled wickedly.

    I am glad you understood that, she confessed. But John Miller truly is some form of farm animal. He chases any girl within earshot.

    Anna, you say that about any man who pursues you, Melinda replied exasperated as the two continued toward their farm. The weather had turned unexpectedly warm and they were both beginning to sweat in the hot April sun.

    That is not so! Anna denied. There are many men in this community who are respectable.

    Like whom? Melinda challenged as they passed by the towering cornfields. Anna shot her sister a sidelong look.

    You see? Melinda confirmed. You cannot think of one man whom you would consider a decent suitor.

    Bishop Smith, Anna announced and her younger sibling chortled.

    You are truly amusing, Anna, Melinda laughed. "But Dat is growing concerned about your stubbornness."

    It is not stubbornness, Anna retorted. "It is selectivity. Dat would agree that he does not want us married of to merely anyone. I have the right to be choosy whom I wish to spend my life. Dat will not be stuck with him. I will."

    What holds you back? Melinda asked curiously. Surely they cannot all be poor matches for you.
